Victor character design is good but then they put all of tekken 7 customization items on him, knife, sword and gun, and made them into his moveset on top of giving him teleport.
I feel like it would've been better if they'd been more minimalist. He looks ridiculous with with the goofy headset sunglasses and gigantic sword. If he was more a John Wick type that pulled out the handgun or knife to supplement his hand-to-hand, then I feel the design would work better.

I know other characters like Yoshi have weapons, but at least it's only 1 type of weapon and half of his attacks don't even use it (plus Yoshi is a lovable weirdo with his attacks).

@@falaflani4831 The bears still use their "bear" hands to fight, the devils at worse have an easily dodgeable laser, 99% of their attacks are still martial arts.
My issue is not the wackiness of Tekken, the problem is that characters like Victor are so fking flashy they could be in Marvel vs Capcon or DmC... Kinda creates a big disconnect for me with all the other characters just using martial arts.
Yoshimitsu used to be THE character with a sword, though. It was exclusive to him, which made him stand out, and he employed just as many punches, kicks, and ninja trickery techniques as he did weapon-based attacks.
Noctis and Negan get a pass because they're guest characters, and by definition, are novelties like Gon back in Tekken 3.
Victor is both over-the-top and an unoriginal blend of several other Tekken characters. A total "throw everything at the wall and see what sticks" character.

This isn’t a new gen thing plenty older people can see the appeal as well.. I’m 24 and I played 3 as well. If this was any other tekken he would definitely feel out of place but this new iteration seems to want most characters to be from anime. This isn’t a traditional fighting game anymore but to be fair it never was

He asking questions, which he won't get answers XD personally... I find guns, or other projectiles in Tekken are quite commont now, since Tekken 6. First, if you always block bullets, then you doesn't know how to sidestep. Second, any new Tekken games are going with experements. And i am personally doubt Tekken will stop at this. It's just how it works now. Better get used to it.

I have come to the conclusion that I don't really like him all that much, but that it is still an inventive and inspired design with a lot of thought and effort put behind it.
People have to understand that the whole point of creating characters like this is to draw people in and make new fans so that Tekken can be bigger/more. This alone is admirable. Genuinely trying to appeal to an audience and get new players invested is a *GOOD* idea, not a bad idea, because then Tekken will live on and be played and appreciated for longer.
Unfortunately, Tekken has had a BIG identity crisis as a series since Tekken 5. 4 was the last one where they kinda knew where the line in the sand was, ever since then the new storylines/characters have been really hit or miss. Sometimes really good and sometimes really bad. I actually consider Leroy to be a complete failure as a design because Wing Chun SHOULD NOT have a Hellsweep or an Orbital. These move architypes came from the fact that the characters had some semblance in martial arts with a bit of rule breaking here or there, but initially almost all characters were trying to adhere to this idea so that when they competed under The King of The Iron Fist Tournament, none of them looked out of place.
Some people point to Yoshi as a counter example of: "Hey look, Tekken has always had swords." But I actually think that is in favour of Tekken's inital design philosophy because Yoshimitsu has No Sword Stance. In a sanctioned tournament, you wouldn't use a weapon, so the game designers thought through that problem and fleshed out Yoshi's martial arts considerably without actually having to sacrifice his swordsmanship either.
I don't think Victor is a bad design, but he is emblematic of the fact that Tekken is very all over the place right now. And to me, Tekken was cooler when it was more about martial arts and less about whatever they got going on now. It's why I Mained Steve in the first place and like him so much. He is a very grounded character even if the combos don't have any basis in reality.
So you realize that despite his no sword stance he still uses his sword... just like Victor? Or am I missing something there? Why shouldn't Wing Chun have sweeps and orbitals?
@@sugoi9680 You only heard what you wanted to hear. Allow me explain myself in full detail if you're actually willing to listen to me.
By Namco's inclusion of No Sword Stance, it lends the idea to the audience that Yoshi might have developed this style specifically to enter King of Iron Fist Tournament. If he didn't, he might have been disqualified due to using a weapon. During gameplay, it doesn't matter what the player does, but him having No Sword Stance at all allows the audience to buy into the fiction presented by the Movelist.
Aside from this, when simply looking at the Movelists of the characters, what does Yoshimitsu's Sword accomplish? More than Kunimitsu's Dagger, more than Negan's Baseball Bat, and more than Noctis' Armoury despite being the first draft of this idea. The vast majority of Yoshimitsu's moves even with his Movelist are not actually Sword attacks/slashes. They are kicks and knees. And when they are Sword Attacks, they are almost unanimously special Unblockable Attacks because the game designers understood that attacking with a weapon is a serious commitment among a cast that doesn't use weapons. This is not Soul Calibur, this is Tekken.
Unblockable Sword Spin Fan, Unblockable Sword Stab, Unblockable Sword Sweep Low Launcher, 1-Hit-KO Sword Swipe, Moonsault Slayer, which is an Unblockable Frontflip Anime Sword Slash. When Yoshi attacks with his sword, the game state treats it as a big deal and the defender is tasked with getting out of the way because you can't actually block a sword. Yes, there are some sword attacks you *CAN* block, but those are the exceptions, not the rule.
*MOST* of Yoshi's Movelist doesn't even have the Sword used as an attack, even within his traditional standing Stance. Not only that, he has an entire Movelist dedicated to not using it at all to get across the idea that Yoshi is a martial artist that can fight *WITHOUT* the use of a Sword. Conversely, *MOST* of Victor's attacks actually use a weapon. Dagger in his left, Dagger in his right, Pistol on his hip, and Sword at his side. If Victor is using weapons all the time, and you can just block em', he's going to look incredibly out of place because most characters can't use weapons. Yoshimitsu is peak design, and what every other weapon-based Tekken design should be trying to emulate, but they're not doing that. They're just trying to make things look cool without thinking through the problem.
If Victor wins any of his matchups, well obviously he was supposed, because he's got like 5 weapons. How was anyone else supposed to compete? If he loses, he looks like a weenie because how did Victor lose when he brought a gun to a fist fight? Do you understand what I'm saying? Bamco was genius about this part too because what happens when Yoshi loses despite bringing a sword to a fist fight? Nothing. He's the goober character. A trickster that's barely trying anyway. In the story he's literally one of the handful of good guys in a cast full of bad guys and selfish fighters and he only fights for a good reason. He doesn't have any desire to kill people either so he doesn't use his sword in that way.
These Fighting Game Characters do bring a level of "Meta Fiction" to their contests. Victor will always look more out of place than Yoshi does because Yoshi actually fights without his Sword a majority of the time, and the game designers went so far as to help the audience suspend their disbelief that Yoshi would have No Sword Stance to enter King of The Iron Fist Tournament. And when he does use his blade, most of the time you can't block it, because how TF do you block a sword with a limb? You don't.
I know the player is just going to be able to block Nina's gunshots, and Victor's sword slashes just like you can block Kuni's Dagger, Negan's Bat, and Noctis' Armoury. It's lazy design. Weapons in Tekken *CAN* work, but sticking to non-weapon based combat makes the fiction more coherent and consistent.
I'm actually a huge fan of Claudio despite him not actually practicing any real martial arts, but the reason that I am is because he's an Exorcist. It works for the story, and I think if Tekken is going to continue to make designs that have no basis in martial arts, they should be considering what they do for the greater narrative/how they impact the magic system they've set up.
Also, I don't think you know anything about Wing Chun if you think Hellsweep or Orbital should be a part of that Movelist. Like... those are the *FARTHEST* things from that style that there could be. They were only given to him to give new Players a Power Low so that they could come back against Players without having to play them clean the whole time. Orbital was given to Leroy to go over Lows, but it would have been more interesting to force the Player into using Hermit to challenge Lows and not give him a Low Crush attack. Because then that forces Players to engage with Hermit Stance as a way to defend and would teach them to value real defensive responses over using attacks to gobble up a Low/get lucky on a Counter-Hit.

@@sugoi9680 Thanks for listening, I do understand that a certain degree of my reasoning is somewhat mental gymnastics, but I do stand by it anyway.
I'm a 2nd Degree Black Belt irl and have trained in MMA for years. Wing Chun as a style doesn't really work in a fighting context, because humans don't have the reflexes and reaction time of a fictitious protagonist character, but the philosophy works well in real competition. The idea of having good flow between offence and defence and that theoretically, your style is a lot stronger if you can attack as you defend and defend as you attack, but how the style is taught and portrayed in Chinese media (Where it comes from) is totally bogus. These "Wing Chun Masters" would get destroyed easily by lower tier fighters that have any legit training like Boxing, Wrestling, Kickboxing, Muay Thai, or even non full contact Point-Based Karate.
One of the best examples of Wing Chun's philosophy I can point to is actually Mike Tyson. There's a concept in combat sports called Loading, and all that is, is being in position to throw strong strikes from and having good leverage and balance to throw said strikes. The reason Mike Tyson is a good example of Wing Chun's "Attack as you Defend, Defend as you Attack" Philosophy is because Mike Tyson's style was based on a tight guard and good head movement. But Tyson's Head Movement doubled as an Offensive Technique as well as a Defensive Technique. As each time Tyson would shift his head off-line, he would also lean down and Load Power into that hand. Say he Ducks Left, that means that if he's standing in Orthodox (Left Hand Forward) he's dodging punches and Loading Power for his left hooks and uppercuts. It's both Defence and Offence in a single movement.
The whole point behind Tekken though, is that you can take these styles that are fictitious, and the weaknesses they have don't have to come to bare in the video game. Tae Kwon Do as a style actually has huge upsides, (There are many UFC/Kickboxing/Muay Thai Champions who have some background in TKD) but to only fight using kicks is to get murdered by someone who can close distance really fast in real life. But Hwoarang doesn't have to suffer the consequences of this skewed style because it's a fictional video game.
Wing Chun had the potential to be really cool in the hands of Leroy Smith but they gave him too much Tekken Stuff and not Leroy Smith Wing Chun that became Tekken Stuff if that makes sense. Hellsweeps and Orbitals were just things that characters had, but the more Tekken Characters that came out, these specific moves then became Move Archetypes rather than just Moves.

That's why even if traditional Wing Chun doesn't train sweeps and orbitals it's fine to have them in tekken. If you have a problem with moves becoming archetypical then just say that. Hey, Harada we should have some more move variety. It has nothing to do with Tekken's fictional Wing Chun. You could even argue Leroy is making his own style

I'm so happy someone in the Tekken community actually is going "wait hold up". This feels liks a Guilty Gear character. Everyone else is gobbling it up and its a little frustrating that people are very uncritical about Tekken 8...
Please understand that many people do actually like this character design and not everybody is gobbling it up because they don't agree with you.
He could be a problem for parry characters but other than that I like him. In the end a 15 frame sword slash is just a 15 frame kneekick that looks different.
Besides he's not more over the top than Tekken 3 yoshi, gon, bosconovitch or true oger. Or Tekken 7 noctis or kuni. Tekken always had characters like that.

Agree so much. We are a long way from Tekken 3 here. All the new characters have magic or powers, just bring back real fighting styles with a few of them having the odd little bit of Devil Gene or something. I can’t keep up with all this teleporting around the screen

Everybody here making the same lame reasons pointing to the existence of devils, bears, kangaroos, and cyborgs. Here's the thing, none of those pre-existing "wacky" characters had their wackiness ingrained into gameplay that it fundamentally changes the experience. "Oooh laser shooting devils!!" When was the last time you actually saw a decent Devil Jin player use lasers??? What part of the bears was so bear-like crazy that the rest of the human roster wont have an answer to it? Does Bryan/Jack actually pull out guns to win tournaments? Part of the problem here is that Tekken wackiness used to be contained more or less in its design and novelty.
These valorant genshin ass characters have functioning weapons and teleportation. Not just like yoshi's weapon stance, but full-on weapon usage replacing punches that alter the range and punishability of things. 3.0-4.0 range launchers and etc. Teleportation, a concept so bonkers in a game that is heavily based on movement and distance. Your opponent backdashes 2-3 times? Doesnt matter. One button and Nocmitsu covers the whole screen.
These guys appear and disappear at will, not just crushing moves, but completely removing their hurtbox on the screen, in the middle of strings with 27 variations. All this shit fundamentally ignores the core of what a Tekken match is. If they were to move in this dumbed-down direction, they could've at least made it look interesting. But instead this is what they come up with. French Colonel Sanders with the glowing Toys R Us spy kit.
I agree too. Characters like Victor don't belong to Tekken universe. Tekken is a martial arts tournament so I expect to see cool martial artists and new real martial arts at each new Tekken.
Getting rid of his sword should fix that. It feels so out of place for him. Don't get me wrong, it's cool and all but it just doesn't feel right.
Are we literally going to pretend characters like him or have bits of him doesnt exist in tekken itself not just frpm guest characters?
I mean his fighting style can still be considered martial art. It's just weird to see people gettin blasted with bullets and longword and shrugging it off.

Yoshimitsu uses Ninjutsu and Magic. Those are real arts.
He has a robotic arm that allow abnormal moves but that doesn't disqualify his Martial Arts.
