Matt, place rebar out the edge of the driveway slab you are pouring spaced every couple of feet so the next driveway joint has something to connect to. Actually a smooth steel dowel is what they use in hwy construction. Before pouring the adjacent section put grease on the dowels that are sticking out. This allows the concrete to move a little with the expansion and contraction process but will keep your driveway level at the joints. 3000 psi concrete should be used (formula is five 94 lb sacks of Portland cement per cubic yard of concrete). Depending on how long your driveway is I’m betting you will get some help in the end so I’ll keep watching. Pouring/finishing concrete is young man’s work! Pro tip- start at the end of the driveway down the hill and pour back towards the road. You don’t want 80,000lb trucks driving on your new driveway and cracking it. Also a joint should be placed about every 15-20 ft. Make sure the earth is packed good under where you will be pouring concrete. This keeps cracks from forming in the driveway and it saves you money. The ground will compress under the concrete as it’s poured. If ground is not packed it will take more than 4” depth to fill the driveway forms costing you lots more money! Lack of foundation prep work is the biggest mistake DYI folks make. Good luck and keep filming!

Hi Matt, Kristen! I would suggest removing bells from the cats because they are in the wild. The collar needs to be such that in sace they are caught in some plant, it snaps off. The bell is the ringer for predators. So usually wild cats are supposed to be fixed and be let without the bells for their own safety.

Matt - Driveway Engineering -- Consider buying surplus military steel landing mats for your driveway. They are pressed steel and lock together end to end. Two rows with the width suitable for your truck would be ideal. Can be moved if required and prevents sinking into mud and prevents great traction for everything from jeeps to tanks to Huey helicopters Should be fine for Casa Grande Matt

Great job on the wall. If you start the driveway watch a couple of you tube videos. In that type of ground you want to use fabric. It comes in 12’x 300 or for ft rolls. The reason is it keeps your limestone from mixing and sinking into the ground as it gets wet. The other reason you want it is you need a stone base under your concrete. This keeps the stone in place and allows drainage under the concrete. It will save you 50% of the stone you will need to build a base for your concrete. There is a lot of videos about it on CZcams. Good luck I enjoy see your progress each Sunday.

Hey, I raised a baby iguana into a 6' monster like Matt caught, he was my favorite pet. He rode on my back while I biked around Tampa , and later Atlanta Ga. He roamed freely, in and out through a doggy door, sleeping in the bushes outside during the day when I was working, and would scramble down to greet me like any pet does . He loved pizza , even though greens were his diet, and was a very colorful local oddity. I would take him to the library, on my bicycle, so the kids could pet him and see reptiles up close. Dino had a personality, much like a cat, preferred one person (me) but tolerated people well, especially kids.
This was long ago , in the 90's, before iguanas became a nuisance pest.

My house was build on ‘51 and the block is all hollow. 15” block for basement 12” for walls. When they did some modification to the block wall garage they just put a ‘glob’ of concrete around the rebar as they layer each layer.
Block walls do not need filling with concrete.

This will generate a constant flow that you can master while tilting the machine over the edge" they must do it without fear of error, getting used to the action takes a few minutes, it doesn't matter if at first something falls out, you will master it quickly I promise. @@SailingGoodBadandUgly gravel/just stone by itself would roll and tires would dig into it - not ideal.
Abc stone is actually a mix of three sizes of crushed stone. It's used as the base for roadways that asphalt is set on.
I think ABC mix would be ideal because once it's been compacted and had time to set, it's basically like concrete. Lay that 6-8" thick and I don't think you'd have any trouble, just have to dig some swales to direct rain runoff, but that'll be needed regardless of the "pavement" type

Guys, I’m enjoying watching the weekly project update; not as much fun as boat life from our perspective, but you are working towards a long term goal. I wish that over engineered fence wall was part of your home, but I know it was for practice.
Since you have a Quikrete manufacturing plant on the island, I suggest you look into the Quikrete Quikwall product. This is a fiber reinforced surface bonding cement 50 lb bag you just add water to. With this product you can pour your footing and dry stack your CMU’s. You then trowel a 1/8” coating on each side of the block, 50 sq ft per bag. This gives you a stronger wall than the mortar set wall you are building and gives you a stucco finish that is water resistant in one step. You can core fill as you did on your fence wall, but it can save a lot of labor. Just as suggestion, a spec data sheet will be on the Quikrete website.

Matt and Kristen, the wall looks great! I think you should just paint it with a concrete sealant paint and grow vines up the wall - preferably something with a waxy leaf to deflect water and provide habitat for birds and other small wildlife.

1/21/24 -- Matt, Advice, Keep hands clean, cement will burn skin! Also Pour your cement a little wetter to help it run all the way down your wall. Also you can run a few courses of block & fill ,a bit easier!

Matt, your ability to learn, adapt, apply and produce results is amazing. As a contractor on large projects, my father treasured employees that had your qualities as they were rare in his day, more so today. As to the wall. Take a moment to choose the correct coating (paint, etc.). Exterior stucco walls hold dirt, moisture, mold, etc.and that leads to a rather tacky show. Some coatings don't allow some of the growth or release it easier when washed with a hose.

Hey Matt, build yourself a V funnel by connecting two boards with a gap in between with the same size of that inner block hole- makes filling the blocks much easier and faster - anyway good work man !

Love watching Matt learn a new trade, and the last part of video shows when he expertly chips the concrete blocks as any I have seen. If you are stucco the outside , cuts dont matter. I watch this you tube channel Project Portugal. And Nick is the guy for anything! Please add Project Portugal to. Your you tube watches, he has built so much by concrete bricks, stone work, stucco, etc and has an amazing art for it. Helps all the locals, etc. Plus him and Andrea are adorable like you two.❤❤
