  • A tribute to one of my favorite lions, the brave young king Big Boy Mhangeni whose journey ended on 29th November 2019 in northern Sabi Sands. Of the original 12 Mhangeni sub adults (9 boys, 3 girls) in early 2018, only two now remains, both are females that have been reintegrated into the Mhangeni Pride.

My heart breaks for his sad life. The Mhangeni Male fought every day of his life to overcome adversity, loneliness and pain. All he wanted was to be loved and accepted. Nana and Nkuhuma pride did the right thing, by this brave and tenacious lion and took him into their pride and given him solace and care. Sabi Sands will no doubt advise us what happened to him once they establish how he died. Sabi Sands will be aware of how much the amazing lion was love and that many of us followed his life and the struggles he faced.
Had he lived, what a king he would have been.

First and foremost my dear friend I must say you have done an exceptional job here with this footage. It's also a very sad day in lionville. God gives life and takes life. He looked ok with nkuma ladies but then Avoca boys chased him off. He declined. He was a lonely boy < lion > with a softness in his heart. And lost his will to live. Suffered so it was best. I must say it brings tears to my eyes. Amazing how you can have such emotions and never saw him. Bless his heart. RIP SWEET BOY!!! GONE NEVER FORGOTTEN 💞

I am glad he got some love and affection in his last few Months. Especially after losing all his brothers/littermates.
Poor boy had been through hell and back. Made it against all odds. So sad.
There was a puncture wound in his spine, but he was not paralyzed. He had recently eaten too.
It is very possible that he could have been injured in some way during the hunt or feeding, and then walked over to lay under the tree.
May have had some internal injuries.

Very nice tribute. So troubled by what happened. So many unanswered questions. When James got word a lion was found dead, he talked about the possible causes on the way to the scene. Vets were there taking tissue samples. He mentioned a possibility he was struck by a vehicle, along with other theories. I gather after no word as of yet, it will not be shared publicly what he died from. Hard to believe after all he overcame, he would die seemingly from nothing. Heartbreaking and disturbing.

What do you think of Mhangeni young male's demise? Sabi Sand authorities have yet to determine the cause of his death or announce the result. Personally, I think Big Boy died of an illness and he was also very lonely. He was forced to leave the Nkuhuma pride which resulted to stress. His meals were irregular, he was losing his mane (again) and was thin especially in the hips/hind legs. You can also see it in his eyes.

Big boy is the lion that only wanted 1 thing : to belong somewhere, be accepted and loved, be part of a family..
He didnt want to be King, that wasnt his thing and never was..
Even if he is just a lion, we can learn so much from him, unbelievable will for life, never quiting even if your life beats you to the ground every second, love for your family and friends, and much more..
His story and appearence is one of the most compelling in the hystory of Sabi Sands, and for that reason he is already a Legend of Sabi Sands.

It always seemed to me that this boy was in need of a strong and self-confident companion, since he was abandoned to his fate while still very young. He was first abandoned by his mothers and then moved away from Nkuhuma pride not of his own accord. I never saw him as a male with the possibility of leadership, but to be a faithful coalition partner and perhaps even a very tolerant and softly father with his own cubs.
Of course, his story's extraordinary because he overcame adversity and illness, but in a video captured in September, he's seen on a termite mound, roaring softly, like a lion calling his family. He was newly exiled from Nkuhuma Pride. I think he felt alone at that moment, but I accept maybe I'm anthropomoforphizing.
I'm sure many of us had the desire and wanted him really succeed, but Nature does not operate based on feelings or good wishes. Nature has its own rules. RIP beautiful lion.

It makes me sick to my stomach to see so many lions dying for the stupidest reasons. These lions make Kruger/Sabi Sands owners million of dollars every year and they can't even have a vet on call. Ginger should of and could have been saved. Mange is a treatable condition if treated early, they knew he had mange months before he died. All they did was filmed him each day getting worse and worse. He died. Nsuku had an injured hip again no vet was called ,he died in excruciating pain. For months that poor lion was being filmed every day. The lodge owners wanted to make sure they got their money's worth on him. Then we have the Mhangeni Males, never once did they try to help them even when they all started dying. Thank God Big Boy found the Nkuhuma pride, they showed more compassion then humans, but then he dies. We can not lose anymore lions, there are not enough lions in the wild today. I wonder how these owners are going to make their money when there are no more lions in the wild. There won't be anymore payoffs of $50,000- $100,000 from the poachers and illegal hunters. There are many parks that have vets on call, why not Kruger/Sabi Sands. We cannot in all good conscience keep saying "We don't interfere with wildlife". We should boycott Kruger/Sabi Sand safaris until they bring in a vet. I'm not saying that we can save all the lions but Damn let's try. Long Live the Lions.R.I.P. Mhangeni Male, R.I.P. It seems to me that the owners of the safari lodges in Kruger/Sabi Sands care more for the ALMIGHTY DOLLAR than those beautiful majestic animals that they are supposedly protecting. With caretakers like them you don't need hunters to wipe out the lion population the owners are doing it all on their own.Long Live The Lions.

Sabi Sand Wildtuin Management notice on Mhangeni young male's cause of death, posted 19.12.2019 on their Facebook page:
** Sabi Sand Notice: Mhangeni Male (Big Boy) Mortality - Northern Lion
It has come to the attention of the Sabi Sand Wildtuin (SSW) that there have been some concerns regarding one of the Mhangeni male lions, Big Boy; that was sadly found deceased on the 29th November 2019, in the northern section of the Sabi Sand Game Reserve.
The SSW responded immediately once alerted about the incident and conducted a full field inspection. Furthermore, in conjunction with the Mpumalanga State Veterinary Department, a comprehensive post-mortem was conducted at SSW Head Quarters. The overall feedback from the State Veterinary Department is that the male lion died of natural causes, with evidence of an internal infection which may have been caused by the external fighting wounds present on the male. There was no evidence of any human-related link to the loss of the lion.
It is always very sad and traumatic to see a wild animal suffer as a result of sickness/disease, territorial fighting, and other natural causes. According to research, only one in eight male lions are estimated to survive to adulthood, and thereafter still face many survival challenges. (Main, Douglas, 2013)
Let us take this time to commemorate Big Boy and honour the beauty and reminders of life that Nature displays to us daily. Kindly share this message with the following hashtag as a way of celebrating Big Boy and his long-lasting legacy - #BigBoyMhangeniLion
SSW Management, in conjunction with the commercial lodges will continue to monitor the situation and any other lion mortalities - and keep our members and interested parties well informed. Should you require any further information, please direct your question to Iain Olivier via email at ecologist@sabisand.co.za
    Kind regards,
    SSW Management**

Maybe if you people had vets taking care of these animals they wouldn't be dying. It seems that Kruger/Sabi Sands cares more for the ALMIGHTY DOLLAR than they do for the animals under their care. There is not enough lions in this world that we can continuously treat them the way we do. Other parks have vets, why not Kruger? R.I.P. Big Boy, LONG Live The Lions

At least there is an answer. Deep down I always knew that Big Boy was young, alone and therefore in danger. The word "concern" in their announcement shows that at least they have been alert , after the immediate and massive reaction of the people. Maybe is my impression but there was a kind of remorse by their side. Or maybe they realized that they have just lost a legendary lion, which could make their land more attractive safari zone. Let's hope that Aka Big Boy Mhangeni 's death will make them more effective on lions life and prosperity from now on. Now you can rest in peace king ! .

10/27/19 is the last known photograph of Nkuhuma male. 1 of his Nkuhuma Lioness sisters (the "Nick Eared Lioness"), daughter of Purple Eye Nkuhuma, sister of the "Pale Eyed Lioness" has been missing for about the same period of time as well. James Hendry said on SL that she is 'presumed dead'. Not sure what that means for the Nkuhuma male.

@@nickcasper8868 Agree. And there are too many 'missing' Lions as well. It does seem like more people are publicly questioning things though so that is a step in the right direction. South Africa recently reclassified Lions, Cheetahs, Rhinos and Zebras as "farm livestock" (along with 29 other wild species) which is super sketchy and has far reaching implications. The Lion population is higher in canned hunting facilities in Africa, than out in the wild. Ridiculous.

A fellow Lion Lover and advocate opened my eyes to the Mapogo situation.. After reviewing and analyzing the video footage of KT's demise, he is convinced of human interference and believes that Mr. T was darted... by the 'Good ol' Boys'...horrific and super sad if that is true. Sabi sand and South African Wild life authorities, in the name of nature , never intervene to help lions and other animals. Whereas they are reaping monetary benefits. I will visit Kenya rather . They are more humane. Don’t blame SA their culture for centuries we all
