I spent some time, back in the 1990s, working on Mode S... that's the magic that allows the controller to see the plane details along with their blip. The phased array allows the beam to dwell during data transfer... all very clever stuff

Yes, the SSR radars are Raytheon these days but I recall the early antennas were branded Cossor and made in Harlow. The Cossor Radio Company, a long standing pioneering British name in radio and radar. The company was later absorbed by Raytheon of the US but the site still exists as a UK R&D location.

I like how they are identical. Great that the old one has been preserved. I'm looking forward to the rotor video.

2:25 Radar operating on UHF channel 36. That's why you had to retune the output of your VHS or Betamax if you were living near one of these. Because otherwise the picture would show snow every few seconds.

now that is genuinely fascinating. only if we had SDRs before the year 1990... and I was born before then, so many interesting signals I bet.

Lovely stuff mate 😁 This may sound daft, but I've always thought there's something "romantic" about radar...this just reinforced my opinion... especially, the old Marconi which I've spied at hack green in the past 👍🏻

A lot of your viewers (all of them) won't understand why the radar antenna is rotating.
Let me explain. This is so 360⁰ coverage can be provided.
