City 17 from Half-Life 2 is one of the most interesting and unique settings in video game history. I've always wondered what exactly inspired the world of Half-Life 2 and what real city City 17 is based on. Today we're diving in and talking about it. Smash like and sub for more thx xoxo

I think there is an in-game explanation why multiple Eastern European languages can be seen. When the Combine won the war, they displaced many people to different megacities around the world to cause confusion in the populations. That's why there are many Americans present in City 17. In the development it was also planned that the Overwatch and citizens would also speak in different languages from around the globe, but it was sadly cut.

I think this is the whole point. The city just represents the devs vision of an eastern European country, while avoiding pinpointing the exact location. If it was a specific city, there's gonna be thousands of videos pointing out how incorrect it is.
But i feel it's just a simple matter of the artists involved, wanted to represent the places they grew in, cause it fits the theme of the game, and also those are places that are usually never represented in western media, so it makes it more interesting to explore, and gives you an unsettling vibe. Let's not forget that besides Viktor Antonov that you mentioned, Daniel Dociu was very involved in the art for the game. He's from Romania, and also makes a cameo appearance as Father Grigori.

On the loading screen of Alyx, they have a section of city that matches up really closely with a real town in eastern europe. There's also a globe that points to a specific location that matches up to the same town. Can't remember what it was.

    Great video, Roman!
By the way, Bulgarian also used the "pre-revolutionary Russian orthography", which consisted of ъ after the end of a word with consonant, and included the letters ѣ and ѫ, which were literally said to be too bourgeois. This change was made by ("surprisingly") the comminists in 1945. Now there has even been a trend of traditional Bulgarian resturants putting ъ after their names.
Still, that poster is in Russian.

It's honestly inspiring seeing a game feature Bulgarian, it's the same realization as when you actually realize your idol is a normal human. I've felt the same way about people from other countries as most people feel about famous people. Like they're not quite on the same page and it technically is correct, I think, but seeing a fellow Bulgarian accomplishing something in a similar area that you're interested and therefore having a pretty big influence on some project as huge (in scale to what is seen in Bulgaria) as Half Life and my all time favorite game franchise Dishonored, is quite inspiring and amazing.

I think it's better for the game overall to have it set in a vague "Eastern Europe" location, allows them to play with more themes and visuals that way. In Half-Life 1, there's a section where you discover that the Black Mesa Research Facility is literally built into a mesa, or at least somewhere with a very steep cliff in the middle of new mexico. Makes no sense, but the cliff section is very memorable and fun.

Some commie-block parts of City-17 also reminded me of Lasnamäe and Õismäe parts of Tallinn. Also a fun little detail I found was that in Highway-17 chapter there is a petrol station on the road and from the pumps you can read that the currency is in EEK. EEK stands for EEsti Kroon which was Estonian currency before we started using Euro.

I honestly love seeing how eastern Europeans just awe over how Half-Life 2 takes place where they live, seeing them be proud of it and comparing it to things they're familiar with, because it draws a direct comparison to myself and how I obsess over the original Half-Life and mainly its remake, Black Mesa for taking place in my home state of New Mexico. Besides Breaking Bad and Green Chile, we aren't exactly known for very much, which makes me smile from ear to ear when I see direct inspiration from the Sandia Labs, references to the Rio Grande and Santa Fe, NM flags, and most importantly just getting any recognition at all

I think you’re probably right in that they just included everything because western people would think it’s the same and maybe to blur the line so no one could claim it. It does remind me of the time I was trying to read something in Cyrillic and I couldn’t understand it at all. And I was like wtf have I just forgotten literally everything I’ve learned in Russian. None of this is familiar. Then I realized it was Bulgarian lmao.

Also, gas station pumps in hl2 are in swedish, even showing price of purchase in kroner, the Swedish currency. On top of that, if you look at a wall in the haunted playground after exiting the train station, you'll see "VEIKKO INDUSTRIES", Veikko being an old Finnish mens first name, literally translating to "guy, buddy, fellow."
I think muddying the waters about where the location officially was with all the different languages was a great choice for sci-fi/fantasy game. It allows more creative freedom and variety of source material, not being locked to using a single city as a reference point.
Personally I remember sleuthing online as a child trying to find an answer to this very question, and I do recall thinking the driving section was propably along the Black Sea coast.
Cool vid! More stuff like this please! Maybe talk about the origins/politics of the Metro series?
