    In this guitar lesson series I will show you note-for-note how to play the chords and solos found in "Free Bird" by the great southern rock titans Lynyrd Skynyrd.
    This Free Bird guitar lesson series is one of the most requested in the history of GuitarLessons365. So in order to do the song justice, it will require quite a few videos.
    In the first video lesson I will show you how to play all the chords to this great song. The chord progression alone is instantly recognizable. Simply watching this lesson will enable you to play along with the whole song.
    Starting in the second video lesson we will begin our look at the epic guitar solo. As great as this solo is, it is also very long so it will probably take some time to get the whole thing down. However, the entire solo is full of great guitar licks that are not only very musical, but also make great technique exercises when isolated and repeated.
    Throughout the guitar solo lessons I will take you note-for-note through these licks and give you some tips on how to play them as well.
    If you can finally make it through the whole solo you can definitely pat yourself on the back. It will be quite the accomplishment.
    In the last video I will go back and check out those slide guitar parts that are heard throughout most of the first half of the song.
    For these slide parts I will give you a good overview of what is going on but won't exactly go note-for-note through every slide lick. In reality, a lot of the slide parts are very similar and once you know the basic part, you can easily follow along with the rest of them. Oh and the guitar that you play the slide part on will need to be tuned to E A D G G E. All the other guitars are in standard tuning. Good Luck!
    Carl..

    After playing guitar for a year, I think it's time to learn this masterpeice

  • @ballisticly2035
    @ballisticly2035 Před 7 lety +448

    I'm a beginner at guitar but have been in a slump at learning new stuff since I felt like the songs I had been playing taught me nothing new. Then I randomly decided to start learning this song after quitting guitar for four years. This song has taught me many new things and many nuances that I never really considered. I have been practicing part one of this song (as well as other songs) for about 2 weeks now and am starting to get some really nice sounds. Even though I am clearly not at the skill level where I should be trying this, I have been working through it, and I have improved so much in other areas because of the hard work I put into this song. I'm really loving playing guitar again and look forward to mastering this solo. Probably the hardest part for me right now is that riff where you do the pull off with the third finger on the B (18 to 15), followed by a bend with the middle finger on the 18th fret on the G. I have been working on pull-off Legato exercises and am quickly improving at it. Thanks for the help!

    • @user-fk5lu6jp8p
      @user-fk5lu6jp8p Před 6 lety +11

      The hardest thing about the riff you mention is the strum orientation. In the lesson, he teaches it as downstroke on the g, downstroke on the b, then upstroke on the b for the pull-off ( D-D-U ).
      I've seen other guitarists do it ( and prefer to do it like this myself ) with a downstroke on g, then an upstroke on b to stay within your hand's movement, then a downstroke on b's pull-off, then use the pull-off time to get your hand in position for the downstroke on g ( D-U-D ). A nice side effect here is that the accent falls automatically on the 18-to-15 pull-off where it belongs - as you play that with a downstroke.
      The third method I know ( I'm sure there are many, many more ) is by using your fingers, either in a hybrid style with the pick, the 3rd and 4th finger, or completely finger-picked with the pick tucked away.
      I myself do that for the ending of 'Sultans of Swing' which has basically the same musical idea as the lick here. But, I use 'pure fingers' only there as I feel its hard to get the pick back out and stay within timing in the middle or the beginning of a solo. I do, however, prefer the sound I get when doing these kind of licks purely with thumb and index finger, which is why I use that technique in Sultans in the first place.
      You would rock your thumb back and forth to hit the g-string and the pull-off on b with your thumb, then bring your index finger in between them to play the first 15 on the b-string in this particular lick if you wanted to play it 'pure fingers'.
      Either way, pick an approach of your choosing, but try all of them. Some become better than you might think after practicing them for an hour.

    If you’re struggling to hit the 18t fret high e during this bends, I recommend doing the bend with just your pointer and middle and hitting it with your ring, rather than bending with your ring too and hitting it with your pinky. You probably have better control over your ring finger, plus it makes it less cramped in that area of the fretboard

    You have excellent lessons as always Carl! I can remember starting my Guitar Journey learning how to play all sorts of iconic and easy riffs using your videos and also learning Music Theory. As I progressed, I moved on to learning alot of SRV songs from your lessons, alot of Jimi Hendrix, and some Eric Johnson. I also started to jam with others live using songs I learnt from you!
    I've been wanting to learn Free Bird for a long time and finally am at a level to understand the concepts and ability to execute it. I have to thank you so much because without your videos I wouldn't have been able to get this far :) Keep rocking.

    Wow! Thanks for a definitive tutorial! I really/sincerely appreciate the help mastering the nuances of this lead. For others reading this... One of the things that helped (really, you can't go on without it; no lie...) me in my "journey to the next level" was mastering the full step bend with vibrato at the end. It's the first note of Billy Gibbons solo on LaGrange. "Straight" pentatonic scale notes "with feeling" so you don't even recognize the pentatonic scale almost every note comes from... I'm thinking about doing a free tutorial on how to do it if ya can't already do it. I had to learn it and I remember how I did it. If you can't do it you can't play leads like this. Rock on!

    Mr Brown, or Carl if you so wish, is there a way to donate, a paypal adress or anything? ( I feel like I'm around 300 years too late in asking for this! )
    I'm sure your course is great ( guessing the free videos serve as ads for it - thanks again! ), I profited from countless of your videos, using 'your way' to play multiple songs like Paradise City, Freebird or Sultans on a live stage, even dabbling in and subsequently butchering Cliffs of Dover.
    Long story short, you came around at the perfect time I was good enough to learn those tunes and I shall be forever grateful for that. I sincerely hope you are doing well!
    Best wishes and another big 'thank you' from germany - you made me a better player.
