- With Frank's free death weeks, I thought it was the ideal time to make a helwyr guide for beginners. This guide focusses on the use of magic combat as it is by far the easiest to use here.

Bruh. I'm literally on the pooper, about to go back to a Discord call where Imma learn Helwyr from a clannie.
Downright nutty timing
I already know how to do this boss but this was a great, quick and simple guide. this will be the video I refer my friends to in future when they're ready to do GWD2
I used your guides to get into pvm like a year ago. Mostly do ambassador and hm kerapak solos now, but can’t forget where I started. Thanks for the great jumping off point protoxx and keep making the awesome content !
Great guide :) Im glad you listen to your subs. this is something i can show my guildmates and even use myself. more of these beginner simple guides please. cant like this enough. simple and concise. not overly complex
Good stuff. Btw anyone without this gear shouldn't fret because there's a lot of alternatives. For example if you don't have the dungeoneering level or tokens for you could go with the tier82 Staff of Limitless Air (costs 7.2M but provides free air runes) and a cheap shield like dragon ward. If you don't yet have a Ring of Vigour you could bring a Ring of Fortune since it provides the exact same luck effect as a Luck of the Dwarves here(, as does an Enhanced Luck potion). If you're looking to upgrade something from this gear I'd suggest replacing the Amulet of Glory with either a Blood Amulet of Fury for 25M or the Dragon Rider Amulet which is a reward for the quest One of a Kind.
Also btw weapon poison +++ is currently cheaper than weapon poison ++, so I would take advantage of that.
Really appreciate in this guide how you suggested some keybinds - massive thanks for all your videos and high quality content
Finally a video that’s more beginner friendly.
thank you for the guide, couldn't have done it without it
your keybind suggestion resulted in not only the first time i ever managed a sheild swap for resonance, but on the first try and basically repeated every time. this is going to change how i approach things. thanks!
This is a great guide. I have 99 magic and Anima core Seren armor, along with blood amulet of fury, so I’m a little stronker than this guide is for. But I’m brand new to bossing and I was able to kill Helwyr first try. The shield switch strategy you described is particularly useful.
Maybe worth mentioning, I tend to cycle through debilitate and devotion for the frenzy attack. Still takes damage but it's in the low 300's rather than 6-700's per hit. Also when melee, I find the best moment to beserk to be after his frenzy, you freedom into beserk with ring of vigour and u should get enough adren after to quake or hurricane for the wolves without having to switch targets.
So first frenzy devotion, second debilitate, third devotion etc (if helwyr lives that long).
Fantastic guide. Well done Protoxx you are one of Runescapes best youtube content creators!
Thanks for the huge compliment man! :)
@@ProtoxxGaming keep up the good work and Merry Christmas!
Dear Protoxx, I followed your Helwyr guide and managed to get a kill after 2 hours of trying! I'm so proud. It took me 5 minutes and 34 seconds to get the kill. Is that a good time? I feel like it was going really fast, i could barely keep up with eating food. I also had to optimize my inventory a bit. I had the idea to use this "demon horn necklace" instead of using potions. The good thing is i don't need to pay for them, i just take 28 sharks with me. You already had the bonecrusher equipped so it seemed like a good idea. I also bought myself this Elite Sirenic instead of buying a noxious bow, as this one CZcamsr said it's bad. I have Shadow Glaives and Elite Sirenic now. I even used this weird color dye on it that i got from my first elite clue! Looks funny. Anyway, thanks for all your great guides, i feel like a really good pvmer now, i want to try this Solak boss next, i think it won't take me long to learn as i can do Helwyr so good already.
Omg I can't-
This seems like a troll comment, lol
literally never killed this guy before, but had him for a reaper task, so I looked up your guide just to get his mechanics and in 1 kill time i was no fooding him. Thanks prot!
Really good timing with the free death week on GWD bosses! Will you release similar guides for the other GWD2 bosses?
I believe my Vindicta guide is fairly updated. I'm not touching greg and its an uninteresting boss (just afk it if u have high lvl gear otherwise avoid it)
As for twin furies, perhaps but at the same time I guess my old guide is sufficient too. Might be able to add a new tactic or two tho. Will have to see
@@ProtoxxGaming Good to know! Thanks for the content, mate :)
I do personally find Greg’s challenge mode mechanic amusing (since at this point I’m more interested in the Reaper points than the drops), but to each their own.
Regardless, Helwyr was the boss I learned at back in 2016, and it’s great to see a 2021 guide for him now.
Helwyr is probably the best beginner lvl boss to learn from as he relies heavily more on his mechanics instead of raw DPS like Greg. I actually found him to be hardest GWD2 boss when I was learning but after you get the mechanics down, his arguably the easiest or second easiest (Twins are fairly easy with scythe) to camp for the full hour and his the best prep boss out of the 4 if you plan on moving on to Raxxor.
Protoxx:
"You could use ovl if you have access to those but I doubt it..."
Me:
Has over 3k Grand Ovl in bank but is trying to learn PvM starting with Helwry😳😅
Oh. Well ur better prepared then! :)
Yea I sat there thinking wow you sounded so assured I’d have no Ovl’s when I’m 99 herb ctfu
Thanks for the video... even though I still couldn't kill the boss, I'll keep trying with your tips... the hardest part is to keep up with the switches
it takes some getting used to for sure. But once you get it down it'll feel amazing :)
is this possible with full bane +4 and a masuta spear? also have fire cape, blood amulet of fury, and ring of fortune
I've been wanting to move on to one of the GWD2 bosses after coming back to the game and I haven't been able to decide, but I think I'll be doing Helwyr now until I get his pet drop. Took me 3,400 KC at Kree for his pet and I've brought my KC to 4,200+ for him so I think it's time to move on
Bro best information on you tube for any Runescape 3 related content.
I appreciate the compliment, cheers!
@ProtoxxGaming bro I've been playing for 2 months just before dxp and anything I needed to learn your videos just answer all my needs. 10/10
Ty for your videos 🔥💯
Thanks lad!
I'm an ironman and I've been struggling. Thanks for the advice!
Hope it helps ^^ cywir weapons are great to have on your iron
Hey Protoxx, is this boss even do'able with Custom Masterwork? The tick prevents me from getting off a good Reso and healing like I could at Glacor, or somewhere like that where damage stops and the boss channels. I kept about 40 tries in pract mode to use CMW and combine it with resonance to heal off his first special but it never worked - the 60 tick damage that comes from my CMW (yes its the trimmed version!) would always eat the resonance.
Yoooo just started learning this yeaterday
Nice I needed this, can we maybe have one for telos too? Great quick guide ty gl.
I have a telos guide ^^ czcams.com/video/W1xvoE3iaDo/video.html&ab_channel=Protoxx
Hello Protoxx, i know that u are usually active in the chat of the new vids i got a question which gwd2 boss is the best money im beginning my pvm carrier i have done qbd and the fight kiln for all 3 styles using ur guide and im ready for gwd2 i believe
You can check that yourself by looking at the gp/kill for each boss using the wiki :)
runescape.wiki/w/Money_making_guide/Killing_Helwyr
Prob Helwyr right know since dual wield magic is rising, but I cant check fully for you. Im currently not at my pc
Just check the gp per kill of each boss by setting the kills/hr to one on each wiki page like the one I sent
taking him on for my necromancy upgrade task. those mushrooms are the biggest pain. he keeps spawning them in a way that basically leaves nowhere to run to and then just stacking bleeds cause apparently necros auto range is too far to keep him skipping.
Was watching solo nex guide (right before i subbed) and was surprised when you said she was a step up from the heart bosses and uh
Well you werent kidding huh haha 😆
The real question is: were you able to get a nex kill?
@@ProtoxxGaming working on it! Getting good gear as an ironman is rough sometimes lol
when learning reso, it's better to put the ability on the first slot of the revo bar, this way when switching weapon it will auto cast reso as soon as possible, less chance of missing the hit or messing with keys.
I would be careful with this because you eventually might get to a point where you want to use your shield for other defensives. After a little while you’ll be able to find the right timing between abilities and that will go a long way
Oh boy, just in time
I didn’t have any kills on it earlier today. Found the portal inside the dungeon. Didn’t have to walk into the desert to find him.
With Tier 90’s, can you just soul split afk with vamp? Or do you actually not out heal the damage
U cant. U need the animate dead spell
It’s odd that I always have already grabbed my cup of earl grey much love protox!
😂🙏🏻
Man do you have a rs community clan?
PLEASE MAKE MORE GUIDES
People think that it's a one and done. There's definitely a lack of PvM guides especially when it comes to early game Ironman and group bossing with roles.
Vindicta guide with Bunyip/Terrorbird?
My current vindy guide is not really outdated but perhaps other bosses ;)
Great on point guide. I feel that guthix tip is really important for low levels! On the side note, i hope this data of GW2 makes jagex consider nerfing/chaning a bit Hard Mode Helwyr. I can do HM Arch glacor, vorago NM, AOD, etc, all day. But HM Helwyr it is really painful to do and very unrewarding!
HM Helwyr is tricky but kind of just normal Helwyr with an extra mechanic or two attached, more damage, and more HP. Would definitely like to see challenge mode become more rewarding, though.
Any recommendations for videos on a returning player from pre eoc with max stats? I have played osrs for years and just been logging in to use keys. Finally maxed the account and kind of want to see if I can get back into it. All of the videos I find are not too helpful for what I'm looking for.
czcams.com/video/0X_fzXcfZpA/video.html This one
and this one czcams.com/video/9Nz97bPLj_4/video.html :)
welcome back
@@ProtoxxGaming thank you!
Interresting fact if you start moving around this boss he will speed mechanics, big bear dont like follow much and get angry if u force him to move a lot.
You must of know I was coming to you fir advice on this boss haha
Free death week so yes
How big is your monitor? I have a 32in curved one and am trying to get my layout to look like yours. Thank you
1440p 27 inches man ^-^
@@ProtoxxGaming thanks! I’ll change my settings
From farming with ghetto setup to speedkilling it with inquisitor staff with full virtus, cinderbanes and blast diff boots. That's how much Helwyr made me. Shame it's no more that profitable.
This was a great video even though I am maxed and already know how to do this boss, I thought it was great. Protoxx, you may have done this before but ED1 boss guide?? I actually am learning it now myself. Masuta I actually haven’t even died too yet but Seriyu I am struggling with rotation on crystals with mage.
He did, but that was back in 2019 or so. Could be interesting to see an update, though.
Yeah I have an ED1 guide, it's still up to date. It's not really solo specific though czcams.com/video/HB8GK3EdT0Q/video.html and might be missing some "new meta" strats or items
@@ProtoxxGaming thanks man I appreciate it! Had a really nice player take me through the other day and that helped so much but I am just looking for more possible strats cause I can’t get passed the big man.
good guide mr froge
Thank you lootshark c:
you should also take vulnerablilty!
what year is it?
I never knew that he would skip the auto attacks if too far away, I used to surge away from his frenzy attack then get a special straight after, I thought that was normal lol
You can try it on purpose and keep running, you'll notice that he indeed will use his special quickly
Yea boy a revamped guide
I actually deleted my old guide 2 years ago because it was terrible :p
@@ProtoxxGaming it taught me mate 🤣
@@ProtoxxGaming I thought you already had one, guess I was half right
@@Geoxon96 oh :P
@@MrBusrunner I have a afk guide too, if thats what u meant :p
Ty
happy to help :)
@@ProtoxxGaming hey Protox, maybe you could help a returning vet. I’ve been learning a lot, for invention, loving the game, currently I have ascensions and sirenic. Sadly I just am not liking range. I prefer magic. I’ve watched tons of guides, if I sold out I’d have about 600m for mage. Already have greater abilities, but with seismic seriously way too high, what would u recomend someone? I was debating either virt or tec with inquisitors or sliske with cwyr switch. Please help!
I also love vindicta, helwyr, would love to learn the spider.
Nice guide. Hear me out for a rare. Ugly Christmas sweater.
wait whut? :p
@@ProtoxxGaming just an idea i had. Would be cool to see mega rich players in ugly Christmas sweaters
Heli seems easier with a scythe now then magic haha, but with scythe price many new to heili people won't be able to afford one.
As an ironman, I do helwyr with an attuned crystal halberd... only T80 but it gets the job done until I get my hands on a drl...
Any luck gsh? And I hate this boss lol
nope. but then again I don't play that much
Helweird is annoying because of the auto attack skipping mechanic. Makes it pretty hard to predict when that next special attack will occur
Noice
Helwyr is a cutie
when are you gonna make a solak guide bro
I would need at least 100 kills more experience and I barely do Solak hahaha
RSGuy does have a decent guide that I’ve been referred to for now, though it would also be nice to see Protoxx do one at some point.
Mole boss next pls🥰🥰🥰
amulet of fury over soul ammy?
I still can't do this boss even with t90 gear. God i suck
I love how you still respect Helwyr as a great learner boss instead of just "afk cryptbloom", i think there's a lot of problems with that armour
You can do no food heli kills with a scythe no shield much easier for much cheaper then cryptobloom
For sure for sure
The split in power between high lvl pvmers and mid lvls is crazy
You can afk Helwyr with just Ganodermic. Animate Dead is what does the heavy lifting here, not a lot of small hits like at Vindicta that Cryptbloom could nullify.
Yeah, while nowadays I can do Helwyr normal AFK with Seasinger’s or challenge mode if I want to actually have fun, Helwyr is still one of the best learner bosses in the game. He’s the boss that I started with, and he’s still great today.
Cryptbloom was a mistake but not exactly one I think I’ll mind owning someday.
bossing seems so unbelievably steep in this game, as a new player with 93 magic and 86 defence i'm literally amazed at how starting bosses are. tried like 30 times on practice mode and even with full anima core of seren and wand/orb of cywir it's just undoable. i try to follow mechanics and after a fight of 3 minutes i run out of food, and i die with the boss having 120k hp left.
Pretty depressing for new players to have worked so hard to get these skills, money to buy this expensive armour and not even able to defeat what is considered a beginners boss. As weird and stupid as it sounds, really considering wether continueing to play this game is even worth putting my time in. Great guide nonetheless..
It's all about practice. Your ability bar can also make a huge difference. Join my discord and perhaps send over a recording of your kill and i'll try to help you out where possible.
Wait until you realize you need to spend 63.5b+ to even touch hardmode where the money makers actually are, now wait until you realize even further that you would need to make a minimum of 20m gp per day (not counting death costs or the gp for your potions & boosts that take away from that 20m a day) without being spooned "rare drops" every day for the next 9 years to even make 63.5b to do the content the people are doing today Or theres an Alternative, shell out over $1000 in bonds on top of playing the game to bring that down to around 5 years or overnight if you're a mega whale, the games ruined bro. The fact they created abilities that cost you money in game is absolutely crazy and what makes it even funnier is the fact that the best ability in the game is a LEVEL 45 ABILITY THAT COSTS OVER 1B all of this is trash by design to sell bonds. Imagine in any other MMO to go raiding with the boys you need to spend max gold in WoW to get your basic combat abilities that does slightly more dps to even be relevant in the fight. Abilities should always be in the form of a time sink not a gold sink. Jagex is so far out of touch with reality, its like they dont even crunch their own numbers to see the math behind player progression. (why keep making content people cant fully experience until 10 years after release?, its almost as if jagex is a front at this point for money laundering through their party hats) you have people making $100k+ off runescape bugs by selling gp. Who's to say the company themselves aren't also doing the same behind closed doors to pump their numbers for their investors.
Why not mention Animate Dead? I know unlocking it requires slightly higher stats but at this point Animate Dead is so good I would recommend it for every boss you can use magic on while learning it at least.
I have an afk guide for animate dead linked in the description. I kept it simple on purpose
Helwyr always seemed to be people's least favorite gwd2 boss, and when I learned it I felt the absolute opposite. It's the only gwd2 boss you can sort of dance against. Res here, dodge there. Furies make movement too frantic with their 3 opening dashes and Gorvek's area denial lands a little weird sometimes, besides the fact that Vindy is just a brainless "punch until dead" boss. And well, Greg is Greg.
TL;DR: Helwyr is the most satisfying & rewarding boss to learn and no-food IMHO. Good difficulty curve
In my experience greg is most hated in gw2. Beginning pvmers do say helwyr is hard but not really hated. Btw for twins dashes just move 2 tiles up/down or sideways makes it quite simple and predictable.
Yeah, Helwyr was the first boss I learned at. It was definitely fun to learn how to use defensives against him-Resonance is just incredibly fun to use against big hits like the You Will Bleed.
@Tortferngatr yeah, and it's definitely a lesson you can carry to other bosses with similar timing, like the prime example of Vindy's 100% accuracy ranged hit, albeit that one being less telegraphed (no yellow text warning beforehand). Definitely a well rounded boss. I also like to use Reflect on the You Can't Escape Me! The mechanics happen quickly enough for you to need to learn to rotate defensives. Even though devotion will simply make the boss a walk in the park. The most annoying thing really just being the RNG 5x5 mushrooms. Thank you for sharing your view too, I like the non sweaty teaching bosses like Glacor and Helwyr.
@Dan dan Berendsen thanks for the tip lmao, I had to read that. And year for sure, Greg is the worst by a mile.
You can't say he can be afked when he has a random mushroom spawn that will hit hard if you don't move, it also stuns you too so you can't eat if you're afk etc
P.S. still a great info video tho
animate dead makes it completely afk (it reduces the damage to basically nothing) check my afk guide if curious
I managed to get 1 kill using all sharks from my inventory. Dead on next 🤡🤡
Practice makes perfect man. Keep going, you got this!
@@ProtoxxGaming unfortunately was 1m+ to recover my items when I was with only 5m in pocket 😔 But I'll try again at least 5 kills next. Thanks for the support 💪
I hate the idea of switching out rings or anything like that... Too lazy... Would rather just take the dps loss.. and not think about it
You can get used to it, though it takes time and practice.
I just put switches for ultimates (Planted Feet switch, Vigour ring, adren pot) near the top of my inventory, so I can just click all three in quick succession, use Death’s Swiftness or Sunshine, then click back. Or I just have the preset start with those on and switch them to my Ring of Death and proper offhand after using Sunshine/Death’s Swiftness.
Bro this guy, when he says you need to have plus 80 stats to stay without banking. Sounds pretentious I literally have 99 stats and i cant get more then 1 kill per run. Somethings off
