  • The glory days of aviation at London Heathrow & Gatwick.
The days when wild boy pilots would show off their piloting skills in front of an assembled audience and we (and they) would love every minute! TWA, Pan Am and Air India were all regulars at performing for us and thanks to my aviation friend Ian Austin, who filmed all this magic, you too can now sit back and relive the excitement of the two icons that defined London Heathrow - The Boeing 747 'Queen of the Skies' and the finest passenger plane ever built - Concorde.
This is part 1 of a two part epic which captures the sights and sounds of Heathrow and Gatwick in the late 1980's and early 1990's, savour every last drop of this golden footage.
The Boeing 747 will soon be extinct from Heathrow, it will be a very sad day when this happens in just a handful of years. It is hard to believe there was a time when any airline that wanted to be taken seriously had to have the Jumbo Jet in it's fleet - These days are presented to you in this video.
Sights, sounds and locations, when I think of what we used to have.. It makes me want to weep that it's now all gone. Thank you again Ian for having the foresight to film all this and for keeping the footage. Details and history -
Here is a line up of the airlines in the video -
    TWA
    Pan Am
    British Airways
    Air India
    Kuwait Airways
    Air Canada
    SAA South African Airways

Ian, thank you for filming and more importantly keeping the footage which now holds so much historical value. Sights, sounds and atmosphere that photographs simply can't reproduce.

Pleased to see the Flying Tigers 747 make an appearance, a very rare visitor indeed in the late 70s/early 80s….🐯

Incredible! I was born in 2001 but i feel like the 80’s were so much more futuristic with all these amazing machines. Now It’s so diferent, planes are smaller with cramped seats inside that’s the new future…

I was just a kid and somehow got Platinum status on Pan Am, which was quite valuable. Not only did you get space available upgrades to business or First but double miles! I used them all of the time and flew all over from the US to S. America and Europe! I'd be seated next to business travelers and they'd all say "Do it while you are young." and I'd quickly quip, "I am"! The end of the legacy carriers Pan am and Twa was so sad , especially Pan Am. They were the first to design the 747 w/ Boeing and in the 80's spent a mint having their's overhauled only to have Lokerbe happen. Both carriers had some, well, rough examples of aircraft they flew. TWA's fleet of L-1011's often smelled like fuel towards the end. This made flying on them painful ! Pan Am had one 747 that felt like it was going to shake apart on the way from JFKto Madrid. Concorde was always a class fun way to fly that defied boredom !

Well Flash, you and Ian have out done yourselves on this piece of aviation art! You knew when you were cutting this thing up 'that SB76 was gonna go bonkers when he sees this..." guess what? He (I) Did!!!
Holy shit! I haven't seen this much Pan Am action anywhere on the Net! The Most Pan Am & TWA 747 action capture in a single video on Earth! And Heathrow (outside of JFK) was the place to c747SPatch it! And Ian did do just that! And I think the Aviation Gods that you two paired up to turn loose all these gems! You guys knocked the ball outta the park with that American Airlines 747SP at the 'Row - that blew me away! As did the UA 747SP along with the Iraqi 742, Iran Air 742 (orig colors)! The peak at Gatwick was pretty Kick Ass too!
All I can say is 'Christmas came 2 months early for me with this...and so THANK YOU guys for pulling this together!

I'm sure you are now resting in the aviation funny farm and I hope the Nurse is sedating you well! She needs too because there is much more to come in part 2 , with even more classic LHR and Gatwick action!!
When I was cutting it together I was checking to see what was on the net and what wasn't - The AA SP really stood out, as only US ads feature on CZcams with AA Jumbos in them - The UA/Iraqi/Iran/SAA/Tigers footage is worth it's weight in gold too. I just wish I could breathe 4K quality into this magic, but at least we have these great memories.
There is even more PAA/TWA footage - I did not dare waste a single drop of any of it! Cheers Sb

Well the Aviation Funny Farm is certainly a place to go when all is said n done, but too early for that, plus I've got to be the fittest and healthiest guy there! Moving along, More to come...? That must might send me to the AFF. But I can't go till I get some good CP Air 747 & RAM 747SP closure! (perhaps Ian has a Manchester doppelganger up north having achieved the same feats!

During my family's annual trips to Yugoslavia we always flew to Heathrow first. Many of the flights were on 747s with a few being 707s, one DC-8, and one DC-10. The airlines flown on 747s were PA, BA, National, and Delta (via Washington Dulles on the PA/DL interchange).

This is to good to be true. People like you SB76 and Ian are now immortal. You have even gotten the leased lan Chile 747.. just the fact that you guys were probably holding those JVC camcorders on your shoulders while filming for the sake of aviation h is reason to place you in the echilons of supreme being.

      @MrFlashjet  Před 6 lety +1

I'm not sure how to respond to this comment hmasurg, except to say humbly, my grateful thanks. The Lan Chile Jumbo is so rare, I fell off my chair when I first saw it was in Ian's video collection, I saw it myself back in 1989 and it is surely the holy grail of 747's - I'm sure SB76 will be including it in his Boeing 747 epic coming out sometime soon...
