This was the first Stones' album i ever heard in my life and i love it.
A good one to get turned on to. But sure it took a few listens...thanks for sharing
Crazy Mama and Hand of Fate are two of the greatest rockers in the entire Stones catalogue. I wish they would be more known to the casual Stones listener. When you describe the "Stones" sound, these two songs are prime examples.
They are pure Stones and brilliance. There is no reason they should not be understood! There are more casual Stones fans out there then expected. That is why I made these! To get the word out and to give them a spoon feeding as to why! thanks for sharing

I have listened to this and then listen to it again. I can’t believe your dedication to the Stones and even more all of the other fans. Your uncanny ability to tell the story and keep me interested all the way through and absolutely wanting more at the end. I think Keith should give you one of his 3000 guitars that he doesn’t use . Why not Keith think how cool that would be.

I was thinking, in fact Joey Pinter (if you know who he is, connected to Walter Lure) asked me to do a doc on the DOLLS 1st one. it is in the back of my mind. All the clips are out there, you just have to be relentless and search over and over again to find good ones. More bullshit footage out there then good, so it takes patience.

Steve, Thank you so much for sharing and your work on this series. Got to see them last week in Charlotte, was bittersweet without Charlie. My favorite band since grade school. Saw them for the first time in '75 at the Capital Center. Thanks again, you knocked it out of the park!

Cool Ralph, thanks for letting me know. a pleasure. first time 75' is tough to compare to. Glad you got to see them. Tickets were so high.....I watched them live from a Stones group on FB in Pittsb. They had front row by Keith.....and it was just great to see it. Not a fan of the hits, but liked the jamming. yes, said without Charlie.

I was fed up with how and what folks have been covering them and only liking the obvious. So much more to discuss and share. I do not think Keith goes on the internet....Ronnie more likely. Like the great Stones fan and author Bill German of Under Their Thumb, he had to break thru the walls to get his Beggars Banquet Fanzine read and known by Ronnie/Mick/Keith in the 80's.....it took a lot of effort. But the point was, they appreciated his work and energy to push their music and he became close friends with K&R. Keith lives 2 towns away from.....an invite for some tea is all I need! cheers, and check out my other docs!!!!

Hi Steve, Another great Doc. ! My favorite song "Memory Hotel". Mick a fantastic front man..not so nice person, as I've seen from other Doc.'s. Keith..( My favorite) has a warm heart, love the story of the blind girl. RIP Charlie. Such fascinating, engaging stories about an iconic Band that will never be rivaled. I never liked all the strange balloons, elephants, and strange stage sets. Just play the music ! Imagine all the money wasted, and lost over those failed attempts.Thanks Steve !
Hi Cindy....I think I made my point loud an clear with MEMORY. I do not think any other artist came come close to this. Mick's voice is not spectacular, it is how he uses it and learned to as he moved along. Yes, that is why they called Mick Brenda, his personalities changing often. A surprise of which Mick/Brenda you would meet. Yeah, aside from his grueling drug period, once Patti came in, he became the tamer and kinder Keith. He is so pleasant to listen to on interviews after. I feel good getting the word out, and folks appreciating it and learning more. I as a fan, watched this also....and still absorb. I should have mentioned that good stage lighting is all they needed, and we would accept them as is. Those props remind me of a flashy car with over flashy hubcaps and spoilers etc. LOL, I had friends like that, and always laughed at that gaudiness. all the best Cindy! thank you.

One thing to look at and think of, Mick Taylor's career did not excel after, he did well....but stayed under the radar, but loved his work. A question would be, what would Mick T sound like contributing to one song on a new album. That would be interesting, and if I was the Stones, I would pay Mick T mega bucks to contribute! forget any egos.

It's hard not to feel like-- compared to the Stones--- that The Beatles were quitters. They gave up. They were delicate flowers. But the Stones kept going! They were driven by something. Lol I mean we all knew Keef wasn't a quitter, but I have to respect the work ethic here.

My cat is doing better on steroid med, he is still sick with some cancer but so much better, and thought he was going to drop 2 weeks after. Makes us happy. we can only see how long it can go. You do these documentaries as if that was gonna be your life's work! Voice for it, tone, plenty of research, the whole deal,man! I have bought most EVERY book, magazine, documentaries, posters, souvenirs, shirts ,hats, damned near every article written by the Stones, their roadies, groupies, bodyguards, you na.e it! And there was no internet when I started collecting. I just dug the whole scene and wanted to know more about the Stones than anyone else! I'm 60, and my first 8 -track of the Band was Black and Blue. Then I started to get coffee table books, and if I found 2 or more, I bought all I could get so I could very carefully remove the photos and framed them and still had whole ,complete copies of history. I never had a computer, still don't, but I did some hellacios collecting of posters, books, framed artwork, some very obscure and RARE collectors books, most every documentaries, albums by each members solo work, shirts, hats tour programs, But then they went commercialized these last say 20 or so years and became the most famous and huge, and rich bands of all times, and I can't justify spending more money than I have. I have a whole apartment completely decorated with the Stones . But I also started collecting my favorite Country greats, such as The Highway men, Hank Williams, 11 and 111. Jim Croce, Bill Joe Shaver. And one of the most popular and smartest, talented, Rhodes Scholar, boxer, military man, teacher that West Point tried so hard to get to teach for them, And he decided to take a trip to Nashville before going to be a teacher At West Point, and saw Johnny Cash at the Ryman, and with his huge resume, copter pilot, golden gloves, helluva football player soldier hugely intelligent soldier and Captain, saw Johnny Cash play that night and it was basically 3 second decision that he wanted to be the next Johnny Cash! And he struggled for years and worked janitorial jobs for Columbia Records for several years, bartender, and was deciding on leaving Nashville, and Cash heard the song that was to make them both very famous. What was the song? Hell, someone else tell me that song! I LOVE THE WORK YOU DO. IF YOU GET A CHANCE, YOU CAN JUST SEND ME A MESSAGE. First I think your question to find 'that' song was Sunday morning coming down written by Kris Kristofferson.
I did not start as early as you did (same age) with collecting, but I did collect the mags. I am in total sync with your philosophy, and being the 'go to' guy with knowledge and passion.
But always wanting to share it and turn people on. If you do not know of Matt Lee, check him out on YT and FBook. He has some collection and a new book HOT STUFF.
I had a Wedding/Bar Mitzvah video making business. Succesful because I did the work of 2 people when shooting and knew how and what to shoot so they would not be boring and clients pressing fast forward. All my videos were entertaining and visually moving like a movie.
As I started hearing folks claiming to be Stones fans on CZcams doing Stones album reviews and also some bashing of albums and rating them I just got fed up. Especially seeing comments praising these folks that did 8-15 min reviews by going to Wikipedia and copying info.
First off a Stones fan has favorites, songs/era/guitarist/albums understood. But a real fan would not bash them. Even Dirty Work has some potential. I do realize their lyrics became below par post 90's.
But folks do not know how to listen and breakdown the minute details of why they are the greatest, and why their performance has never been duplicated. A rarity in our lifetime. I got so fed up with it. We would listen over and over to them.
The biggest problem was, folks do not realize they need to be played loud and/or thru headphones to get a FIRST understanding of their talents.
So with all this floating in my head, and fed up with this fakers out there, I thought the fans needed to be spoon fed and understand who, what, where, why and how they do what they do and their real timeline.

That's maybe a good thing for them NOT TO HAVE IT,ANYMORE! Seeing B&B was my first 8 track, I have had to replace it with cassettes, and CD's. And I was betting 100-1 you knew that I was Seeing that you knew the Kris riddle. Most people hardly listen to a whole song. And to me, my biggest concern and enjoyment is to hear a song once, and right away determine if it is a awesome lyrical story that jams and plays great loud, and is there a personal experience that I went through myself, and how darn good the music makes the lyrics blend and sound ultimately as a personal true story I ha e lived through myself. On B lack and Blue ,, I had this chick and we had a Memory Motel. Every Saturday and Sunday. It was not as soon as I b6the 8track, but many years after. And we both grew to love it when we were on our way every time we went for the weekend. And if you listen closely to Hand of Fate, even though the song has the gritty, grinding music and sound of the Stones, It's. A GREAT SONG About a couple having a great extramarital love affair HE HAD NO LOVE FOR THAT GAL of Mine----------- but HE HAD PAPERS THAT THE JUDGE HAD SIGNED! AND THEY WERE WRITING TRUE ,LIVE , ROCK AND ROLL TRUTHS. I AM INTO MOST MUSIC THAT YOU CAN SEE IN MY LIFE ,ON THE NEWS, REAL LYRICS AND THE STONES TO PLAY IT LOUD AND HE SLOPPY AND THAT5THE STONES METHOD OF DELIVERY, WHICH IS THE DAMNED HISTORY OF THEM!. SUNDAY MORNING COMING DOWN makes you feel the boy kicking the can and the smell of someone frying chicken, stumbling to the closet and finding his cleanest dirty shirt, wishing Lord that he was stoned! I don't think I have to get any points across to you. But so many people are not hearing ANYTHING! I Write poetry and my older brother is who turned me on to Kris. He's published a few personal poetry books and wrote one helluva book of poetry and 2 cd's published in Nashville and out of 13 songs, 10 are great, story tellers, but we k own there are many ignorant people who will read a book or a poem and miss the whole scene. So he wrote a forward at the beginning of the poetry and songs bc we know less than half will get what it's really about. Hell, I listened to Kris Kristopherson song Allen BILLY DEE, AND THE LYRICS ARE SO CLEAR, I figured it out before it was hLf wY through. Check it out. I was maybe 13 . When I heard the song that was telling about BILLY DEE, a good timing honky Tonkin party boy. Thanks again!

I was at Knebworth in 76. Slept rough the night before and got near the front in the morning only to make the schoolboy error (16 year old) of going to the toilet and couldn't get back. Spent the rest of the long drawn out day wondering about. I remember you gotta move track though. Slept rough that night and made it back home. Like you I jam along with Love you live still today especially Ronnie's great solo in Paris on Cant always get.

@Nemo I travelled with a group of older people I didn't know that well on a bus from Coventry to Stevenage who were telling tales of the isle of Wight festival and recently seeing Southside Johnny and Graham Parker double header tour with separate horn sections etc I met them again at the bus station going back. Heady days!

I needed a few days to get through this 3 part series and I enjoyed every moment and will need to go back and give it a few more listens/viewings. I always loved BnB and wondered why people took issue with it, but I enjoyed it more than I worried about what other people thought of it. My main thought was that it was a SHORT album because there are only 8 songs! It never occurred to me the songs were too long to have others added! Brilliant album and brilliant review, thank you Steve, very much appreciated.

So many folks wanted that crunch riffing like prior albums. They just gave it something else......a reason why I make these is because I do not think some folks know how or what to listen for, and do not know how to appreciate their brilliance. Hell, Chopin never wrote a bad tune....just different styles. Anyone who can not appreciate this album is not a real fan! appreciate you letting me know. hopefully you check out my other docs. in planning stages for Some Girls next. a lot of work ahead! cheers

@@FlipSideCT Great to hear SG is next. BnB and IORR were good albums but that was a great LP. I remember it bouncing them back to 5 star reviews in Rolling Stone. The drug arrest got Keith clean finally and it showed in the songs. Their writing was much better and Keith's issues and Mick's divorce from Bianca gave them the most material to write about in years.
Beast of Burden may be my all time fav stones song - possibly their best opening chords to any song IMO. Massive hit, FYI even Tea Leoni was dancing to it in the shower in the movie ' The Family Man' for some trivia . Was in 'Frank Claus' too.
@@jgm4661 them living in NYC and the Punk scene helped lyrically, and yes, Keith's new clean up from being on the very bottom all helped.

I love your perspective on the making of these albums and how you count down the bars and the charts and the sidebars *(like what's going on behind the scenes at the time)I had a friend, she passed away. She was Married to Bobby Keys, 70-71..she was never the same after she toured with the Stones..she came back chain smoking and drinking heavily & after splitting up with Bobby, tried to raise their daughter via serially marrying 4 different guys after him. .(just an aside)

Thanks so much for these 3 videos, truly immense contribution that we stones fan can fest on. Have been following every step of the way. The Black and Blue period, Stones at their most colorful, really creative period, i totally agree that B+b has some of the greatest Stones moments on vinyl and laying the path for how they mature as a band. Fool to cry, memory motel , Hey Negrita, Hot stuff are all big reasons why I fell in love with the Stones in the first place.
I would not expect less from you Steve. A true fan, and just gets it. I would say if there are still any doubters after they watch this, then it will never happen. A fan can appreciate everything they give. I would say I am only a McCartney fan from the 70's, everything else falls flat for me...so I do not say I am a full fan at all. This album shutters brilliance! thanks again

hey steve was so looking forward to pt3 and didn’t disappoint👍🏻you never fail to put together a great doco☝🏻as far as the album i have a few opinions🤔i think firstly when it was released it was the longest as far as distance between releases so some fans were dissatisfied expecting something different😩i personally think the songs are strong but collectively maybe not, side A plays well although hot stuffs not a great opener but side B were the problems are with hey negrita, melody and fool to cry not a great trio together and even worse on cd format with 5 non stones regular sort of songs in a row!i think crazy mama placed before fool and rounding the album of with melody might of worked better👍🏻in saying all that i still have it in my top 6 fav stones albums🎸looking forward to any more doco’s you release simply outstanding😁

A 2 year hiatus of album releases. I do remember and know folks wanted that rocker album and disappointed not having Taylor. A huge difference in melodic musical flow and presentation. I guess my key comment point is, not to even look at this as a flowing album....but as different songs presenting themselves individually. Any one of these songs can fit in on any one of their albums. I am thinking of Some Girls, but do not have enough material yet....and not ready to buckle down and start reading this quick. cheers and thanks again!

The story I heard behind the "Who The F*ck is Mick Jagger" t-shirt is that Mick had dropped in to a Miles Davis LA studio session. Mick was in an ante room of some sort waiting to see Miles, and someone told Miles that Jagger was waiting. Miles apparently said "Who the f*ck is Mick Jagger?" and kept him waiting a while. Bear in mind, this was during Miles' Dark Magus blacked-out windows years, so it makes sense .... Oh, and just randomly to say, (a) I love what Charlie does in Hot Stuff for a couple of seconds just after Mick sings the Jamaica line, and (b) I know exactly what her hair all drenched in spray looks like.

And on your comment below about Darryl, I will say only that I have missed Bill since 1991. It's weird to me that Keith said only years later he had never quite realised how good Bill was. Hi Jean...thanks for your comments. An album I surely wanted to prove the doubters wrong. I have a good skill of project organization, research and compiling information. I hated tests in my schooling, but aced all my projects and reports. No Stones contacts, and doubt they ever will. But would love to work with Bill Wyman and his archives. cheers !!
So happy to have come across this. I recently read "Life"...my first reading of Stone's stuff was "Up and Down..." in '79. Been on a Stones kick for 2 weeks now...and have rewatched some of it already. Best documentation of this band I've ever seen!

I agree with your evaluation of Fool to Cry i recall hearing it on an AM hit radio station at 11 years old and getting the sad almost bittersweet deep feeling of it . So well put together without even knowing who the Stones were

It's always been my favourite Stones album, since the week of its release. I've just never understood the push back against it.
right, and that is why I wanted to make this. So many do not know how to approach it and understand the brilliance.
Likewise I liked the album straight away. Even though I got into new wave/punk I prefer the funky disco Stones to the attempt at punk with the likes of Shattered.

I just finished this epic trifecta series on the making of Black and Blue. What an odyssey! I feel like I’m really getting to know the Stones intimately. I think their Black and Blue LP is way underrated. I can remember buying this back in 1976, and feeling like they were going back to their roots on this one. I was very attracted to the track “Melody.” It was such a departure in style but I really dug it and still do. “Hot Stuff” remains a staple on my Stones playlist for workouts. And as you sum it up near the end, the Stones are only human, just like us. That only endears me to them that much more.

Exactly! These are so incredible- with how many Beatles docs come out- it’s so good to see these Stones analysis in depth! There is so much footage I’ve never in these seen somehow, just very well done.

Loving this walk down memory lane! (40 minutes in)... I was at the Thursday MSG show in the front and center about five rows back. I remember Keith spent much of the show sitting down in front of his amp and Mick made a comment about it being Thursday in NYC as in too many shows in a row. Thanks for the great and rare detailed look at history and the epitome of freedom I was lucky enough to live.....
so cool to be at MSG show...I really wished I could have witnessed 69-78! When folks saw these, I can only believe they did not realize how great this was and the future's history they were witnessing. very cool thanks for sharing

One of my big disappointments from this period was the loss of Mick Taylor, one of my favorite guitarists ever. But if you think about it, what better replacement could you get than Ron Wood? Especially if you listen to the work by The Faces from the early seventies. He was a Rolling Stone before he was in the Rolling Stones! Pleased at the nod to his solo work, I remember being thrilled with his Gimme Some Neck album.
Mick T gave all he could, and did. He knew he was short term. Ronnie is a blessing! Faces are the closest sound to Stones. I have been buying Ronnies LIVE newer solos.

I've been a Musician for a long time, and I am endlessly fascinated with "what goes on on tour" and behind the scenes stories. I didn't dwell in the superstar world, but we were regionally popular, and as so, we opened for some biggies. Another world altogether.

@@FlipSideCT I love their music, but in 1981, I believe, came the Tattoo You tour. They, as before, left Kansas City off the tour. Many of my Friends bought tickets to see them at Red Rocks, But the local Rock Station that was KY102 began a petition to bring them to town. I think there was close to 75k signatures. They came, and I went to that one. It was evident immediately that they didn't want to be there too much. It was lazy & sloppy, I left feeling like I could have bought several of their albums, for the cost of my ticket, and enjoyed the music.
I do understand their earlier tours were great, but, for me...I just wouldn't have come if I were them. They clearly did not want it, why do it?
I will have to do some hunting, most of our master tapes were held by our bassist, and we lost him to Cocaine, 6 weeks after our last show. By then I was doing a contract with Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, producing several paintings in a 3 year project. I can no longer locate the drummer, who I've known since we were 12, and our guitarist probably would have burned anything he had...I may have a cassette somewhere from a practice, but I don't know after all the moving. Im back in KS, and ive had a studio built in my backyard, We are moving equipment in now, and if nothing else, I will post stuff from my project.

MCM, you totally got why I presented it the way I did. The visual, the words, the music all at once, our brain needs to absorb the content and I understood that. We need to process and break it down as we absorb. I have had several complaints of how slow I am....so they are hidden from my channel to comment again. The Stones in the seventies were so interesting... there was a lot going on professionally and personally. It became less interesting later on with the personal stuff, but that's not a bad thing - Keith met and married Patti, and is still married to her. His life was back on an even keel. More power to him. Bill Wyman of all people did the last outrageous thing - married a teenager when he was in his fifties!

The Stones moved along with their times, and so many folks could not accept that. But true Stones fans did. Yes, their drama changed for good/bad. Patti was great for Keith. He knew he someone good and did not want to screw it up. Bill, knew he f*cked up after with that ridiculous marriage(s). He admits it.
@@FlipSideCT One of the things I like about Keith is he wasn't a player. He's a pirate and all but he's also traditional in some ways - pretty loyal and didn't play the field. Bill and Mick were the horndogs in that band.
I was born the year the Stones formed. They're such a fixed, permanent presence in all our lives. I can only think of Britain's Queen as having a longer presence. God save the Queen and the Rolling Stones :).
