Architect Designs an Off Grid Cabin Inspired by Japanese Interior Design (Cabin Tour)

Nestled within a forest clearing on Bruny Island, along the South East Coast of Tasmania, Bruny Island Hideaway by Maguire + Devine Architects emerges as off grid cabin filled with an undeniable charm and sense of escape.
Accessible via a car ferry and a short drive, Bruny Island Hideaway is the quintessential tiny cabin. The Japanese-inspired structure emerges calmly within the clearing, in a location that dictated the need to be off grid. With no water supply or sewage infrastructure, the off grid cabin required a self-sufficient design; solar panels, rainwater storage as well as a duel chimney, fireplace and stove feature throughout the home.
The cabin tour showcases a minimal design, as the architecture and interior design incorporates concealed joinery and appliances in a poetic yet functional way. The off grid cabin required furniture and joinery built into the space, resulting in a flexible interior design that is both cosy and comfortable. Designing a tiny cabin meant that consideration needed to be given to how the space functioned and cleverly integrated surfaces showcase an honest use of craft and material.
Internally, the off grid cabin features light pine cladding and lining, with knots and grains adding character to the space. The timber cladding is also incorporated in the exterior; the timber reinforces an authentic discourse that the tiny cabin has with the surrounding natural environment.
The off grid cabin design borrows design principles from Japanese architecture. The simplicity of the space speaks to functionality, while natural light informs a sense of openness within the small internal footprint.

About this house - so elegant and calm. I think the tub outside is a great idea. I couldn't see not having a ground floor main bedroom or Murphy bed, though. That ladder stair is scary for anyone with physical problems (knee problems, say) or who is aging or has bad balance. I am sure it suits the owner currently, but it won't be good forever.

At 4:18 there is a reference to "gas hot water". Does the owner need to bring a bottle of propane with them when they come to stay? Why not use solar hot water?

Saw this place visited by another Australian channel. They made it look a lot more basic. But it is great design. Bruny island sure seems like it is getting overdeveloped now given the run of locations we've had on this channel this year!

Alot was made about the building being completely off-grid but scant attention given to the components that had it be so. The wood burning fire was was obvious, but where was the water coming from as could not see a watertank etc. Whilst beautiful this seemed more like a commercial

I don’t have a fear of heights (rock climber), but I have an illness that causes vertigo so mindful of ladders and stairs because I can fall over on flat ground. I’d love a stay in this minimal, magical slice of heaven.
@@kayelle8005 your most welcome! Thanks for asking me! I see. The ladder is strong and sturdy, but it is quite steep. One thing that might be worth asking the owner about (if you decide to go) is O believe there is a second mattress/bed that can be set up on the day bed on the lower level. Although not a typical part of a regular booking, this may be something they can set up. This way you have a back up option of the ladder proves too risky. It is a glorious property. So special. You will absolutely love it if you go. 😄❤️

Gas?! I can’t understand why you can’t make it all electric. Put more panels on roof and sides and other buildings, batteries are charged up while you are away. Or have an old windmill converted to be a generator. This is what I’m going to be doing with my build next year.

An entire video about the "natural wood" and "special natural light". This is a "fully self sustained" living space which would have been more interesting to hear about.
How is it powered besides the obvious solar panels? What kind of panels? What about power usage, storage, special equipment? What about the plumbing? What about the water treatment? What about the security? What about those "ways to protect it from bush fire"? What about communications? What type of wood is the exterior wood? How was the foundation placed specifically for the structure? What is it's special benefit? What is it's purpose? You know, the things that makes a house...a house. Otherwise it's just another interpretation of a cookie cutter blueprint that you can get for free on the internet.
There are only SO MANY ways you can "poetically" describe the cladding and paint on a box/house.....and it is getting tiring at this point.

I love the content of these videos. I wish the "vibe" of each video would reflect the architects though. Not every architect is softspoken (but it seems that each video they must portray this "vibe") and I think the videos would benefit if you removed the music that is overlayed on everything.
Again, I love the content and this is just some constructive feedback.
This is the first NTS that I had to skip through because the motion + intense music was just too much. And I didn't learn about any specifics about the appliances and how they were hidden, the hot tub, how the cabin even closes itself off at night, etc.

Hey there, I stayed here a few months ago. it's steel. Makes it easy for puting hot items of the stove straight on to it :)
With all these amazing designs in remote places that open up to the environment, aren't you just inundated with bugs? Coming from the Midwest US and now living in the PNW, I'd love to have large open windows and doors like that, but without screens you'd be overrun in minutes, especially at night.

Nah spiders aren't a concern but venomous snakes are along with mosquitoes which now carry the potentially fatal Japanese Encephalitis Virus in Australia. Not sure if it's hitched a ride on the Spirit of Tasmania yet.

Beautiful craftsmanship and design. The bath could have been a Japanese wood tub…. The white bath looks out of place within the location…
I like this little building but.. there is a great range of stunning blonde Tasmania timbers available locally yet radiata pine was used for the internal cladding and fobbed off as a deliberate choice? I suspect it was a budget choice rather than a deliberate aesthetic decision? either way it was sadly a missed opportunity to take the building to a higher level. I still like the building though, just not the pine.
"The real challenges are how to incorporate the various surfaces in a poetic way" = slap the solar panels on the roof bro. Nothing grinds my gears like architect language!

These guys are being completely pretentious. It's not that the finished product they made is no good, but how they desperately attempt to try shower their own work with words like "poetic" and "honest." They sound like a bunch of university students selling their project during critique. It's especially grating when they are trying to elevate their creation as humble and down-to-earth.

Need passive heating and cooling rather solely on solar panels. The high placement of solar power make maintaining the panel harder if it had been lower. Fire resistant wall and plants should be constructed to resist wild fire. The cabin also stand out like a sore thumb which did not blend into the landscape in an aesthetic ways either...
Cool. But the music choice is very off. Its tense, almost scary movie szene like, when the vision was minimalism and relaxation...

It's lovely, but the shite talk that goes with it is a bit much. The standard looks like a gang of lads did a DIY job.
The production and filming are incredible, but the transition to better help could be waaay better. Instead of just switching to the sponsor, you could connect it to the video. An example: if you are living in an off-grid cabin, getting a therapist can be pretty challenging. Better help is here to solve that for you, etc...
Why do all these people consider natural light “poetic” when nothing hugely special is being done to either the cladding or glazing? I think the term is becoming overused and sounds like something a Realestate agent would use rather than an architect. I’ve only seen a select few videos where it’s truly been special. Instead I feel it’s code name for “we have windows”
