    @72mardy Před rokem +2

    Hey Tim, another great video 👍
    I'm not sure how far along you are since this was filmed but I thought I could drop a little tip or two.
    These types of units run quite hot. Make sure there aren't any wires touching the heatsinks on the back of the unit or they could melt.
    I understand it was just a quick install but I would look at flush mounting the unit. These things aren't really designed for marine applications (as you mentioned) but you might be able to reduce salt air corrosion if you mounted it in the dash. Marine electronics usually have the circuit boards coated in resin. Also on this point, grab some dielectric grease for all the plugs and joins. It helps with corrosion in the plugs and pins etc. You can use it on battery terminals as well.
    With the camera, you should use some of that dielectric grease on the RCA plugs and then cover them with heat shrink too.....they will rust in a week if you don't. As you said, the camera operates off 12v and is usually run off the reverse light power...same with the camera trigger wire (brown) on the head unit. When the trigger sees 12v it automatically switches the head unit to camera display. A simple single pole switch to 12v+ connected to both the camera and the trigger wire will give you an easy on/off for the camera.
    A flush mount USB extension in the dash connected to the head unit USB is another cool thing to do. You can get them with rubber covers. Just don't leave the USB stick in there or it will rust into the USB plug in no time.
    Lastly.....run that bloody 12v constant (yellow) wire to the battery with a fuse you lazy bugger 😂
    Sorry for the long winded post....I've been doing 12v audio installs for 30 years. Cars, boats, enclosed cab tractors, caravans, busses, trucks. Shame I don't live closer or I'd come around and rewire the old girl for/with you.
    Cheers mate 👍

    • @HarpersShed
      @HarpersShed  Před rokem +1

      Thanks mate all very good advice. I am going to put the constant power on next time I go out to the boat, your right I was just being lazy lol. The whole dash and switch panel is going to get remade when the new engine goes in and it will get flush mounted then. When I put the camera up I will probably cut the RCA plug off and solder with dual wall heat shrink to extend the wire down to the head unit. That way there is no connection in the elements at all.

    very cool bit of kit, does so much, well sort out. I think I see a compass at the helm, you will need a VHF radio and if you are not going to use paper charts that is about it. I do suggest that RMS have a series of maps for inland rivers, bays and lakes. They are plastic covered and good to use for the planning stage of your voyages as they show the big picture.

    I actually run the same unit in my vehicle. Its kind of pokey (they run a 8 year old budget cpu) and takes a lot of tinkering to get the sound to output decent. Word of warning to anyone putting their main google accounts in: China has backdoors into these units so they can track, keylog and do a lot of other malicious stuff. So just dont keep anything sensitive on them and dont let them connect to a wifi. Anyway, great idea for a cheap chart plotter!
