    The journal provides a multitude of reflective tools to help you develop as a tabletop game designer. This is not a playtesting journal. That is to say, the journal is not focused on one specific game or project. It is focused on you. You are the project.
    The journal is broken down into logs, with prompts to guide your reflections.
    You will be guided to reflect on:
    - Your own definition of success
    - Your gaming preferences and those of the market
    - Games you have played and what you learned from them
    - The people who support you in game design
    - How you support other designers
    - Your design ethos
    - Your goals and ambitions
    The journal contains a selection of tools to help you analyse your prototypes in development.
    - The Hook Generator - to help you create concepts which will catch attention
    - The DARE Model - to help you prioritise your ideas
    - The Ladder Model - to help you determine how engaging your game is
    - The Idea : Execution Matrix - to help you determine how likely your game is to achieve commercial success
    - Player Journey Maps - to help you identify the pain points in your games
    These tools are all based off of models and matrices developed and discussed on the Adam in Wales CZcams Channel. If you would like more information about any of these topics, there is a huge amount of information within that channel.

    I just got your book tonight. I'm very excited to dive into it, I've made just 1 game so far and am currently working on the prototype for my second! Working on these projects is truly a joy. Thank you for inspiring all of us in the community

    Love your videos! Just bought your book about a week ago...
    I'm going to UKGE this year, with a prototype in hand! Also (not so) secretly hoping to at least thank you in person for this quality content. Cheers!

      I’ll be at UKGE too - playtesting on the Sunday afternoon and probably volunteering at Playtest UK for a while on Sat too. Feel free to come and say Hi!

    Have enjoyed your series of game design tips so have ordered the journal to show my support and hopefully it will help me focus my mind on what it is I'm trying to achieve in my game design journey.

    Sir, you made the book.

      It’s a word very widely used in gaming communities to describe games. I always think it’s rather vague and people use it inconsistently. But it is in such common usage as gamer jargon, it seemed logical to include it in a list of descriptors in the book - since this book is not just for me; it’s for other designers to explore their own preferences and ideals.

    4:20 ah yes "netease 1 new game per year"

    • @AdaminWales
      @AdaminWales  Před 5 měsíci +1

      It’s a bit of an insane high bar isn’t it? Seeing it in isolation makes me realise what ridiculous pressure I put on my myself :) But I know a number of designers who manage far more than 1 game per year, and I think that keeps me going. The goal is probably more accurately “license one game per year to a publisher”. Which generally results in one release per year further down the line. It’s nice when you have a successful year where you sign two games - taking the pressure off the next year :)

      @@AdaminWales Wow, two or more neteases per year? 😋 I hope you don't mind our little tease. It's quite hard to speak and write at the same time.

    Great video, Adam! A lot of great things to think about in this book; I’ll definitely be recommending it to budding game designers.
    I had a hard time concentrating with that copy of Alien Frontiers on the desk next to you, though😊

    That chess game reminds me a little of Duell :)

    • @AdaminWales
      @AdaminWales  Před 5 měsíci +1

      I hadn’t seen Duell before so thanks for pointing that out. Yes, it has some similarities. Also similar to Deblockle. And most annoyingly, similar to Cubic Chess. The rules are very different, but the core concept is the same. So I think my game is a bit of a non-starter! :)

    Hi got your book very interesting and gets me thinking what sort of games I like designing and how that differs from what I play.
    Your videos are great and very helpful to new designers like myself.
    Will be at the UK games expo again this year probably playtesting like last year..
    Play testing my second game at the moment with a third slowly in development.
