  • Heres a match race between Miss Fancy Patch (Quarterhorse) and Little Miss Leader (Thoroughbred) run during Louisiana Champions Day in December 1995 at The New Orleans Fair Grounds. The distance is 870 yards, just short of a half mile

    i love both QH and TB racing, and i know that it all depends on the distance of which they race. because this was a half mile instead of a quarter, the TB won. if it had been a quarter mile, the QH would've won. That's just how the breeds work, no bias to it!

    Despite tiring on the last stretch that quarter horse acutally dominated that thoroughbred. That quarter horse held almost the same exact speed the whole mile. She ran her fastest up until that last stretch and the thoroughbred pulled up not even winning by a stride. Quarter Horses are americas best athletes.

    Interesting race. I'm glad that they went at a neutral distance, because if they had stopped at a quarter mile the QH would have certainly had it, and if they had gone longer than that, the TB would have dominated. I think this was a fair distance, because neither horse was really far ahead of the other. It would be neat if there were more match races between QHs and TBs, but the whole Ruffian tragedy does make me a bit hesitant about match races, although any race is inherently risky.

    According to Bloodhorse, Dr. Fager ran the 2nd quarter of his world record mile in 20.6 seconds while carrying 134 pounds. They claim that is probably the fastest quarter mile ever run in the body of a race at any distance, including distances as short as 3F. The world record for a quarter mile on a dirt surface is, I believe, 20.57. Clearly, Dr. Fager is one thoroughbred who had quarter horse speed.

    they both where breed for racing, just different lengths but their breeding routes are mainly the same...both have Arabian heritage. Many TB go on to different careers after flat racing and become hurdlers, Steeplechasers, show jumpers, Eventers Dressage horses..even barrel racers and cow horses...TB are smart and keen to learn...but Racing is what it was bred for and what general public knows it for...there are many TB types from long legged slim build to the more compact bodies ones...Cross a TB with a warm or cold blooded horse breed and you can get any type of horse for any job...which is where the Quarter Horse came from....you can't have QH without TB...both are amazing :)

In case you didn't notice in the video, the Quarter Horse was ahead in the beginning, and actually pulling away from the Thoroughbred. It is only because of the Thoroughbred's stamina that it won the race. Learn more about your horse breeds.

    The thing is quarter horses were built for short spurts of speed where thoroughbreds were built as the ultimate running machine, they have a heart over twice the size of any other breed and lungs to match. I love both but to me a thoroughbred is the ultimate horse for racing. :)

    • @ashlysmith7525
      @ashlysmith7525 Před rokem

      Well thoroughbreds have a heart weighing in at 8.5lbs, that's about average but the breed has been bred so the heart can take the distance, they are between a quarter horse for speed and between an Arabian for stamina. Though secretariat was a cool race horse, his heart was almost 3 times the size, weighing over 20lbs.

  • @iFlip2012
    @iFlip2012 Před 13 lety

    Quarter horses are faster over short distances because they have shorter legs and a stockier build so they can get their legs under them quick to reach top speed almost immediately. They are the fastest horse in the quarter mile, hence their name. It is harder for thoroughbreds to start quick because of their lengthy legs and sleek build, but once they reach their speed, they can pull off a much bigger and faster stride than a QH. And they have the Arab endurance in their breed to their advanta

    This stuff always comes up especially when americans want to hold out in any kind of way. It's quite easy to solve, just do it, that's all. Here we saw what we saw, period. The rain, the mud, the inside, WTF, we saw what we saw. The distance that makes one a sprinter and the other a long sprinter(TB are not resistance champs, arabs are) can vary, just like with humans, yet the cu-toff can be accepted at 400m, 1/4 mile. Bolt must have a good 400m, but not champ time(we all know he's 100m + 200m beast, right?). So the QH certainly goes damn well up to 400m (1/4 mile), yet must also have very good times in 600m-800m but not champ times. Clock the greatest runners of both breeds for speed in any distance you want. Then if you want, put them together to see who actually races better (like with humans), here calmness "prior to", responsiveness, heart & soul and many more things come into play. So all you TB and QH people interested in this, just go ahead and do it, don't philosophize over it, just do it.

      Dang Erous You are correct. Quarter horses have strong, explosive muscles, which make them very fast in the short distances, but once they hit that half mile mark, they are about spent, for the most part. Short powerful strides compared to the long strides of a Thoroughbred.
