When I started “being mortal” I legit thought I was going to finish it in one go. I was so impressed with his structure and organization of this book...I still think about how well he did. I know quite a bit about the topic, having studied nursing home policy and working as a cna, and I was shocked that he could make a topic about mortality optimistic. I know that is probably only my take, but when you get into the weeds of that realm of medicine, it is so easy to get a bleak perspective. Some of the examples he mentioned, I’ve never heard of and I really do think that this book will inspire new research. It rlly got me inspired to continue down this career path that I started. I think I’m going to read it every yr ngl

I think the author did a wonderful job of telling relevant stories that fit the subject of end of life care, while balancing that out with being honest about what medical professionals can do to help facilitate necessary care, in inclusive ways. I never thought that I could get so interested in or excited about the possibilities for navigating what can typically be a very arduous time of someone's life. Definitely one of my best reads, this year!

Lab Girl is another book that I enjoyed particularly the aspects of being in Minnesota as that's where I live. Haven't had a chance to read Quiet but would like to as I am an introvert who occasionally socializes (mostly to go to the Library when it was open to talk to other bookworms). Hi Olive! Long time fan of your videos---you are a big part of my rekindled reading life, so THANK YOU! I am curious if you find that format makes a difference in reading nonfiction (what with data points, photographs, etc.)? For instance, I have tried to read H is For Hawk twice but the e-format just doesn't seem to have the same gravitas as a real book and I'm going to give it another shot! Have a great nonfiction November!

I think I need to buy a few of these books for my own collection. In particular, quiet, and maybe you should talk to someone. I used to be on stage when I was younger and mistaken for an extrovert when actually I'm an introvert. I also suffered from a agoraphobia for many years and couldn't leave my house. I think most readers have an introverted side and at 70 I'm learning to celebrate myself. I haven't had a wonderful experience with therapy but the book about maybe you should talk Etc. Sounds like a memoir I would really appreciate. 84 Charing Cross Road is the favorite but I want to reread it. By the way I love birds. In Hawaii there is a bird who lives outside my house and serenades us what the most beautiful chirping. It feels like a gift. Much Aloha.

You know that comment you made when you said you had one go to title for the inevitable response to "whats your favourite non fiction book?" Well 84 Charing Cross Road (84 CCR) is MY go to response!!! It's been at the top of my list since 1988 when I first saw the movie. Sure I actually prefer Helene's other book Q's Legacy as the best of all her books, but I still use 84 CCR as my go to answerto this questions, mostly because it is far more well known.

Note on Robert Massie... his main focus was Russia, but recently I was reading a series of books about WW1 and he wrote an amazing treatment of the runup to that war called "Dreadnought." I think the title takes away from the content a bit... in my view, Dreadnought is right there with "Guns of August" and the early portions of "Rise and Fall of the Third Reich" as the best books about the causes of war. Highly recommended for war history buffs!
