Honestly, I am happy that my medical school did not do this. We found out our match results privately and chose to share (or not). Congratulations to those who got their dream residency. I also got my first choice, but I feel for those who matched lower on their list or not at all. It is hard enough without this spectacle, can't imagine having to be on stage.

From my understanding you have the choice to go on stage or not. There is no way that they would force you to make such a private moment especially if it is disappointing public. I also know as an instructor I would have offered to open and check for them first and if it is what they wanted then I close back the envelop and they proceed to the stage and if then we go aside and talk about it.

You have a choice to do that or not. No one makes you do shxx.

I go here and want to say you have multiple choices 1) not participate at all. 2) participate in total surprise, like you find out on stage. 3) open your email privately and then go on stage. And you can change your mind at any time! If you decide to not go on stage you don’t have to.

Even though I don't know them, I am so happy when they match to the residency of their choice.
