I think this had to do with the original singer not being available for the public performances. It happens sometimes in the industry.

Nobody seems to mention the singer. What’s her name???? Even Wikipedia mentions some Ann Calvert or Beth Andersen
None of them is this girl.
This lady is called Mandy Newton, she appeared in the UK version of The NeverEnding Story video and was his backing singer and dancer for this era. Mandy however is lip syncing over playback. The real voice in the recording belongs to American singer Beth Anderson. Ann Calvert sang the French version of the song on the recording with Limahl.

I've never heard Limahl performing this song live, it's always playback. This is a synth electronic LABORATORY song, which is impossible to perform or recreate live, and it was PERFECT the way it was originally made.
