The great thing about spring for me is the transition from SoCal ugly Duck season to seeing all the smaller bird become active, meaning the photo skills and muscle memory need to come back into focus as they are smaller, quicker, shy-er, and far more erratic.
While in SoCal, we have hummingbirds all year long (Anna's and Allen's), their numbers and activity jump around their mating season. And if you are lucky enough, you can find those places the hummingbirds tend to congregate - be it a good source of water, feed or just an area they feel safety with.
This is a supercut of a series of Slow-motion video clips taken of the hummingbirds seen over a couple of days around a small butterfly garden with a stable water feature. Captured at full speed, the action of a hummingbirds wings, flashing of gorgets, and even sticking out their tongue for water can easily be missed and hard to tell the actions within the details so I opted to focus on a fast FPS capture of these little creatures to share the wonder that I think we all inherently have of them when they are around.
