    I'm excited to try the "up-in-the-fingers" grip! With the disc stuck in your palm, I can see how you lose lots of power/arm speed trying to compensate with release angle for a an-hyzer shot. With the disc up in your fingers is almost impossible to release hyzer. Before I was compensating with a late release and skewed shoulder angle.

    Great video, I just returned to discgolf at my local club after 7 years of not throwing anything except garbagebags into the dumpster at work.
    I like the technical tips and step by step instructions.
    having spent my youth ruining my back at my local track and field club by overtraining the shot put and discus throw I just have to nitpick a bit about the "fatigue" references at 05.00-05.20 which sound like a misconception to me :D (sorry about that.. I dont like to be "that guy" but sometimes i cant help myself), its actually not so much fatigue but rather that you want to leave the muscles fully relaxed so you can exploit the innate stretch reflex when you bring up the torque from your legs through your hips thereby increasing your explosive Power. Everything you said in this video will teach people to do this very effectively however =)

    Great video. The tip about how to accelerate helped me the most. I was focusing too much on the acceleration from reach back to chest, and was experiencing fatigue. Now, accelerating from the chest to release, combined with improving the spin I put on the disc, I throw better, and don't overwork myself trying to muscle the disc.

  • @cpjackson79
    @cpjackson79 Před 13 lety

    Just started using the Z Nuke. I've already seen a 430 foot drive in an open field with it. Most of the time, I'm seeing 360-375. Once it wears in a little, I think it'll start to really hold a turn for a long long time.
    One of the things that really helps me is the concept of focusing the power rather than unleashing the power. From there, you can unleash focused power.
    For RHBH, a slight left to right tailwind is ideal for max D.

    I ware a Townsend metal brace on my right knee. I have poor range of motion in my hips due to steal rods in my lower spine. Along with a metal plate in my neck that stops some ROM. I am a right hand back hand, and forehand thrower. With the forehand I can do a run up during T off. with the back hand I can not do the cross step as my leg will not cross due to the rom in my hips. I still throw 100 to 150 feet with the back hand, and about 200 to 250 feet forehand.

    @Noruko1234 Před 12 lety

    Generally speaking, if you can get what you need from the disc with that grip, then it's okay. However, speaking from my experiences, driving with a finger on the leading edge of the disc will simply take power off of your throw. Don't let that keep you from trying it though, or trying to modify a power grip so that your leading finger is separate from the other 3 but is still looped under the rim - meeting the two styles half way. But, if you're getting the distance you need, stay the course.

  • @RunAndGunRedneck
    @RunAndGunRedneck Před 12 lety

    For average players the nuke is designed to cut back to the left like most discs (with the exception of the Avenger SS or Buzzz SS). Keep throwing it until you learn the flight pattern. You may even want to try to release it with a slight anhyzer. But he said in the video that he releases it on a hyzer so you may want to try that.

  • @aparki66
    @aparki66 Před 13 lety

    What he doesn't talk about is his side flick. Competed with him a few months back and he's CRUSH's the RHFH. Great attitude on the course RTW.
    He told me a story where Feldberg though his name was Ron and called him "Ron the Whip". The nickmane stuck and now sign's his own disc's RTW.

  • @Noruko1234
    @Noruko1234 Před 12 lety

    If you're a newer player, your disc (assuming you're a right handed back hand player) will generally fade to the left at the end of its flight. This is normal. If you're looking to get straighter shots, make sure you're throwing level (not high up in the air) and are getting some good snap on your disc. Lastly, make sure you're using skill appropriate discs - i.e. Eagle, Surge SS, Avenger SS, TL, etc, not Ape, Force, Nuke, Boss, and similar discs. Other than that, practice; talk with locals too.

  • @ele7ven1
    @ele7ven1 Před 12 lety

    Each disc has a critical trajectory where it will continue to turn right no matter how much time it's given. You can attribute it mostly to speed, angle, pitch and spin. So with a disc like the Nuke, if you give it massive spin, then even a small anhyzer angle can send it irrecoverably to the right. That said, it did look like the the disc was beginning to flatten out at 0:53 so it's hard to tell where it would ultimately go.

    This is one of the best videos on youtube for learning distance. I started playing almost a year ago last febuary and cause of this video I can through about 450 feet. Its not 700+ but I can keep up with most people on the course. there are four parts of this video that are very important to distance: 1:08 the grip - 3:09 using your body - 4:52 arm speed - 6:42 use of a towl

  • @TexasRobert1
    @TexasRobert1 Před 11 lety +1

    Learn to throw a mid-range correctly and the distance driving will follow. Plus, because it is slower with a more blunted edge, it will not hurt so too much to catch. I would suggest a Discraft Buzz. If you can throw it 250 feet, your equivalent with a driver should exceed 300 feet.

    I've been discing for years, I like to use a 3 finger grip. Just a basic power grip like most people use, but I feel like the pinky gets in the way. I just curl it back to keep it outta the way. Prevents grip-lock a lot, and I can drive prettttyyy far. Not sure the distance exactly but probably at least a good 300 or so.

  • @crimsontide1980
    @crimsontide1980 Před 10 lety

    Awesome video man!!! The thing that helped me the most from this video is when you are running up and you bring your arm back, you should start out on your toes on your lead (driving) leg and then right before you pivot, drop your heel, which shifts your weight and momentum to your front (driving) leg. Just doing this alone gave me about 30 extra feet per drive on average. I've been playing for a few years, never competitively, I only go with buddies from work. I've never been especially great at disc golf but I love to get out there and play. I've never had anyone give me any pointers or suggestions on what I'm doing wrong or what I should change, but after watching this video I gained a much better understanding of what I can improve upon. I'm already throwing much longer drives, still need to work on opening up my hips and shoulders upon release.

    a disc thrown backhand (by a right-handed person) will always fade left at the end of flight. Understable means that it will turnover to the right and then fade left once it slows. Also, his definition of understable is different from ours since he can throw 700+ feet and I'm assuming you can't (you're just not a world champion distance thrower).

  • @TexasRobert1
    @TexasRobert1 Před 11 lety

    The ability to throw far is important and is one of the factors that separates a novice from a pro. Being able to throw more than, say, 300 feet allows more options for driving. For example, you might throw a powerful hyser over a grove of tall trees and land in an open field--impossible if you haven't mastered proper driving technique. The ability to deliver powerful drives when needed gives you more options and will lower your scores.

    Huh I throw like Rob. To me that always made sense and was comfortable and offered me the best throw possible for both distance and accuracy... my brother does a side toss that can get some real distance to it. A style I never could learn. We would go to a foot ball stadium to throw discs. In highschool we had a freeze bee toss for farthest distance. With three throws I threw longer than a foot ball field on average.

    nuke under stable?

  • @QEDlol
    @QEDlol Před 12 lety

    An understable disc does fade right however because he throws backhand he imparts a spin on the disc which forces it to go left. For example: if you throw a Buzz a really straight flying disc backhand at the end of its flight it will go left. if you throw the buzz forehand or flicking it, it will go right at the end. that is all due to the spin of the disc. the reason he uses an understable disc is that during its flight it has the potential to stay in the air longer. b/c of how it behaves.

  • @flipkid925
    @flipkid925 Před 12 lety

    He said the Nuke was understable, which means it would fade right at the end of its flight, correct? But as he was explaining the flight path, he showed the disc fading left at the end (his left). Did he mean to say overstable? Sry, I'm sort of new to disc golf and trying to make sure I understand the lingo

    This is a very good video - I have watched it a bunch of times. I have a question though. This is in no way meant to try to discredit Dion's throws - we all know he crushes. Ok, if you are on top of one hill (like him) and you are throwing to the top of another hill (like in this video), doesn't that play "shorter" than the actual number of feet from point A to point B, since if you flattened out that piece of land, it would be longer?

    • @eph_kni
      @eph_kni Před 9 lety +3

      You are correct in assuming the distance from the tee to end of the range over a valley(or a peak), if "flattened out" would be longer than a direct vector from the tee.
      I'm no expert, but I would say it depends on how they measured the markers.
      If they measured using something like a Laser Distance Measuring Tool, than the distance would be accurate from the tee. If they measured using a Surveyor's Wheel, then most definitely the measurements would be inaccurate from the tee.
      Overall
      I'm fairly certain, because of their implied professionalism, they would have used a Laser Distance Measuring Tool to mark the distance.

    Learn forehand. Requires less body movement. Also, I know people that can throw backhand 400-500 ft with a very slow run up. It's seems to be more about getting the hips to turn rather than generating speed. Though, it can help with distance to have more speed.

    @Imgetnswole22 I'm guess they did come out with the Esp Nuke OS this year. They were selling them at the memorial this year as a fundraiser disc. My mistake

    It is too overstable for 99% of ppl, unless U want a super knife hyzer disc or something that U know is never going to go straight or turn (aka a super windy day disc) Basically, unless U have a HUGE arm or need an overstable utility disc U really don't need one.
