There are comments saying your explanation is a nightmare, or over-explaining, or complicating the process; however, these are people who already know how to do the math. Your videos are for people who DON’T know the math. I find them helpful and fast forward past information I’ve learned already from previous videos. Thanks for putting these out. I’ve learned a lot.

Yes. I can see the answer immediately, but learning the processes is the basis to do that.. that takes time and practise. I have always struggled with percentages!

both subtraction problems in parenthesis first, then multiply those two, then subtract the -1.. 4-6=-2 and 6-4=2 -2x2=-4 -4-1=-5.. the answer is -5.. or C!!

That is why PEDMAS or BODMAS were the acronyms I was taught.

I had this math going to vocational college. I had a math teacher who help me out a lot with math.
I was always screwed up on show your work. Some teachers wouldn’t give you credit without it. I love that this was multiple choice.
I love the videos. They take me back many years ago 😅 but agree with those that ask for more simplicity. They would be more enjoyable and easier to understand if you go straight to the point: order of operations and then solve it 👍🏼
When I was in high school (60 years ago), we always had parenthesis and exponents. I never had any problem then, but without parenthesis and exponents, your PEMDAS explanations definitely helped me since.
I am a literary type but when I follow your problems my mind clears up and I feel a lot of satisfaction. Has anyone measured the brain waves of people listening to a favorite symphony or watching one of your math lessons :)? it would be interesting to see how the synchrony of different parts of the brain gain coherence with different types of experiences.
I used to be a solely literary and art person, but since learning maths I have come to appreciate the perfection of maths, and how calming it is when you understand it.
Your explanation of this problem is a nightmare. Just my opinion 6-4 = 2, 4-6= -2, 2*-2= -4, -4-1=-5, easy
Agreed; this explanation seemed scattered and excessive. These videos are usually more succinct. State the proper order and correct result first, then get into the explanation and any necessary discussion of where folks may have gone wrong for those who might need it. Nearly 23 minutes requires more attention than most students would have to give (just like my comment! 😜). But I truly do appreciate these math refreshers. Thank you!
That's how I did it. I thought I'd got the right answer the wrong way.
He gets more payback the longer the video. These are NOT to teach, they are to make money.
Often times they do this so you can rewatch for views… also… people although they understand and have the knowledge.. are poor teachers.. not because they are so genius and full of knowledge and there is an information overload.. no.. they are poor teachers.. simplicity is best…

This maybe why school children are having a difficult time learning math.
KIST keep it simple teacher... Smart guy certainly a fine instructor but could help my Grand - kids do High School math the way "modern" text books are written. Maybe grade school math instruction isn't up to par but last few years average math test results are heading down.
24-16-36+24-1=-5 FOIL method.
-2•+2-1=-5 GRADE school method. Method preferred by those who couldn't get Algebra.
You FOILed my desire to be the first one to go there. I think we learned FOIL to make it possible to work with variables, not integers.

When I was young this was simple but somewhere along the way they changed the rules. Simply stated, math is very precise so expressions need to be precise. Instead of P.E.M.D.A.S it should be (P).(E).(M.D).(A.S) or something similar to clarify order of operation.

I'd like to XPress My Answer is -5. :) Technically, there is no such thing as subtraction, only addition of a negative number. And division is but the multiplication of the reciprocal value you are dividing by. Also, back in my day, if someone handed you an equation like 5*4 / 3+1-2, you would hand them it back and tell them to format it correctly.

PEDMAS order of operations says do the parenthesis first.
(4 - 6 ) = -2
(6 - 4 ) = 2
Multiication and Division come next:
-2 × 2 = -4
Next comes addition and subtraction:
-4 - 1= -5
If you insert an = at the end of the equation, the answer would be -5.
this is a really good lesson. I forgot some of how negative numbers work. So thanks :)

BEDMAS Brackets, Exponents, Division/or Multiplication, Addition/Subtraction
The problem with basic math is that everyone forgets the rules that you learn from elementary and secondary,for which I believe should be added to every test and it's not cheating,some people have photographic memories while others learn by repeating. Order of operation is forgotten for some,just a suggestion to either right it on the chalkboard or on the test paper
Simple....(c) -5
Brackets mean multiply.
(4-6) represents scale e.g.
- 7 -6 -5 -4 -3 -2 -1, 0 + 1, +2 + 3, +4, +5, +6......
So + 4 -6, count backwards = -2
-2 x (6-4) = -4
-4 -1 = -5

You lean this in basic math or Pre-Algebra It a lot of schools it is a requirement to pass Algebra 2. To graduate from High School This is a state requirement.

In the 70s , we never heard of PEMDAS and just did our algebraic equations left to right anyway. How long has this been around John?
I graduated in 1977 and I don’t ever remember hearing of PEMDAS! I was beginning to wonder if I had slept through all those classes and I LOVED math. Thank you for your post.
Multiplication having higher precedence than addition has been the way mathematical notation works for a few centuries now.
Acronyms like PEMDAS seem to have been around for 100 years ish, maybe a bit longer.
Actually teaching these rules in the context of simple arithmetic was more patchy in the past than it is now though. Some people who learned in the 70s or earlier were taught this, but certainly not everybody.
It doesn't really matter for this question though, because reading it left to right gets the correct answer anyway.
Thought I must have got this wrong because it was obvious. Thought must be a trick and expecting to be told so . But NO so happy I got it right but sad I didn't learn anything 😇

That wasn't the way I was taught. (4-6)(6-4)= 4(6-4) - 6(6-4) = 8 - 12 and the extra -1 = -5. That thing where you changed all the signs yuck.

If PEMDAS was any good as a rule it wouldn't take so long for you to explain this simple problem. The order of operations for thIs problem is actually PSPSMS.That's why it's so confusing to some people. In this case the parentheses are quite sufficient without invoking PEMDAS
