Peet and his mom truly are the embodiment of finding joy in the small things (not meant as a pun!) and giving yourself up wholeheartedly to the moment! Peet has managed to retain a youthful enthusiasm and wonder which likely is in part due to his wonderful, patient, empathetic mother who didn’t simply just accept and support this exuberant aspect of his nature but wholeheartedly embraced, appreciated and nurtured it even though it was no doubt challenging at times. So many kids with adhd grow up feeling forced to quash this side of their personality or that it’s wrong due to how people constantly focus on only the negative or disruptive aspects of their behaviour, finding it much easier to expect them to change to conform to societal norms instead of putting in the time and effort to recognise, harness and guide the positive potential of that energy, creativity and unique way of viewing the world. Peet’s family show us that true loving bonds occur when you are willing to find ways to work together through the tough times, accept each other’s imperfections and flaws whilst building up each other’s strengths, focusing on the positives and not letting the normal everyday squabbles and irritations fester or override what is important. It is a mindset and a way of living where you realise that each day we are given multiple opportunities to choose how we will respond to the things that happen around us and the people we interact with and we never know how far reaching the influence of these daily, casual decisions might possibly be. Sorry about the long essay but I’m just inspired by the whole family and needed to express my feelings.
