She nailed what she does when she described it as stripping away the visual so folks just heard the audio. Her combination of lip-syncing and facial expressions allows the listener to hear the jumbled words of trump in realtime. It really exposes his incredible lack of ability to use syntax and speak coherent sentences. The timing of her confused-look expressions when trump is on a rambling rampage really drives it home!

I'm so glad Stephen stopped doing the character. I did recognize it was satire, but as someone who grew up in the toxic world of evangelicalism, Stephen's carefully cultivated persona and skillful sophistry was frankly retraumatizing. He's genuinely funny, so I'm glad that I can enjoy him without having to suffer through the character he used previously.

I totally understand Colbert's reluctance to visit that character. The terms "fake news" and "alternative facts" are direct descendants of the term "truthiness" which that character invented and popularized. I expect Colbert feels somewhat guilty about that.
