Dante is a Xoloitzcuintli… one of the most ancient dog breads.. native and indigenous tribes thought they were a guide in Mictlán (the after life) I’m hoping that’s why Disney used them as Miguel’s friend through the movie.. and why he was changed into an alebrije

I wonder if they chose the name Dante after Dante Alighieri -- who wasn't Mexican, but still wrote the Divine Comedy, which is another story about a journey through the afterlife, so it fits in with the story, as well as the dog's significance as a spirit guide/guide through the afterlife.

This movie means the world to me.
My mum passed in 2018 and I just went through a complete depression. I didn't care about playing music anymore I didn't wanna do anything.
Then I met my gorgeous Mexican girlfriend.
We watched this together for first time and I cried so much, and the one thing I will always take in life is her telling me "I wanna honour your mum on our ofrenda" then she looked at me and put a guitar in my hands, literally pushed it there and said "now you play your heart mi amor".
She done so much for me over the years and I even wrote a piece of music now to play for her when I propose. Shhhhhh 😌.
The two songs that all break me in this too is "remember me" and "proud corazón" from the end.
When we marry I am gonna surprise her by me playing "proud corazón" in Spanish and playing it on guitar for her.
Long story short. She is my whole world and I don't know what I'd do without this angel by my side, and I'm so honoured she let me into the beautiful tradition that is Día de Los Muertos.

cheers from Mexico! i hope you are better. My mum passed in 2013. Took a long time but i have learnt to not experience my missing her as just suffering, but as a way of honoring her, and also being strong and enjoy life as she would like me to. Every moment of love and noble feelings, she lives it through and with you!

    Hard to watch without crying.
Coco had Alzheimer’s/Dementia and I knew right away what was going on with her. Forgetting names, not responding (zoning out), forgetting who people are, etc. etc. That hit hard. And when she had a moment of clarity at the end and sang along.....😫😢😫😢😫

What I love is that music actually can bring clarity to Alzheimer's/dementia patients. That is 1 of the things that speaks to me about this movie. The second big thing is that when my daughter was a baby to about 3yrs, she liked to touch my face like young Coco did during Hector's flashback.

Dante the dog comes from the Xolo breed which is hairless. The Xolo dog breed is also believed to have been created by the Aztec god Xolotl to guide the spirit of those who passed away to their final resting place Mictlan. In the movie Dante knows Hector is Miguel’s great great grandfather when he is pulling Miguel back to him and Miguel calls him a stupid dog. Dante being a Xolo dog can see everything and has the same powers as all the alebrijes aka spirit animals. The Xolo dog is also famous for looking identical to the Egyptian god Anubis which also gives the Xolo dog more of a mythological sense of mystery. Google Anubis Egyptian God and compare to photos of a Xolo dog not Dante who is animation and you will see what I’m talking about. Great review and movie btw.

And the reason Frida's spirit guide is a monkey is because she had monkeys as well as Xolo dogs and parrots. She did paintings of all of them. I love the surrealist stage presentation in the movie as it really looks like something she would paint

  • @alharairah2214
    @alharairah2214 Před 2 lety +13

The comment about Dante's tongue is related to a thing about Xolo dogs (also Chinese Crested) - the hairless gene in dogs is also related to the jaw/teeth genes, so many Xolo and Chinese Crested dogs have deformed jaws when they express the hairless trait. Many of the winners of the Ugliest Dog competition display these traits.

I really enjoyed watching Coco due its amazing animation, music, story and overall the characters are very charming. The built up of the story has a nice pace and it taught me a good lesson of the importance of family. The scene that got me emotional is when Miguel sang that song that Chorizo guy (i forgot the name of that Luffy looking dude) made to Mama Coco. I teared up, for some reason, the song hits so emotional. The only series that teared me was your lie in April and this movie. This movie was truly amazing and i hope that my future children will watch this show

What I thought about this movie the first time I saw it, and how many times I've seen it?.... For starters, I'm from Mexico City. I love this movie, I think I've seen it, at least 15 times (specially in November the 2nd, Día de Muertos - Day of the dead). I love how close this movie is to the actual tradition and culture of Día de Muertos and Mexican families and all that. I love the little easter eggs, like Mexican celebrities, food, piñatas and all that. If you ever want to live this tradition, come visit México the first two days of November, and you will enjoy it. Btw, this movie isn't colorful because it's a Disney movie, it was because thats how colorful Mexico is. Not everything is tequila, sombreros and desert, like Hollywood makes it look like.
FYI, we hate that you relate Mexico with 5 de Mayo, is not even a big holiday here. It's just a battle we won against France en 1862.
Our Independence Day was September 15 of 1810, against Spain.

Although many Mexicans Unfortunately feel represented coco, coco Is based mainly on the racial AND cultural stereotype they have of México,Poor people,Poor people selling In the streets, brown people ,AND talking about The only tradicions And músic they now about México Day of the dead and mariachi,Mexico Is a country of racial AND cultural diversity ,gastronomy etc etc But they portrayed Us as the majority of American ser us,They only lacked The desert and the donkey To make It the complete stereotype .

Many Americans these days would consider a movie showing inner cities, or "middle America", to be a more accurate representation of the US than previously where movies tended to show the upper echelon of society. Coco is probably just an extension of that current way of thinking. Most Americans also understand that Coco is a story that takes place in one tiny segment of a much larger country.

Ugh, you´re one of those guys... I bet there are WAY more villages than proper cities in Mexico, also traditions are more common in little villages than a major city, the impact and celebration is nowhere close if you're living in a big city. The directors actually traveled to Mexico and learn about its customs, what would they get if they chose to take things from Mexico City or Monterrey? Nothing memorable. You sound like a typical whitexican believing you're actually doing something to promote wokeness for your country.

To begin with, I will explain to you that Mexico has been stereotyped in Hollywood cinema for many years, racially and culturally, and Coco did it too, a poor town without technology??, racially equal people? Yes, it is true that there are many brown people, but In case you don't know, in Mexico there was a miscegenation and settlement of Europeans, secondly, I hope you understand that Mexico is a country of racial and cultural diversity, although you regret recognizing coco is based on the Mexico that most Americans know, It is very curious ...... that with charm they were more congruent in the racial and cultural representation of Colombia, but with Mexico very little, and in case you do not know, Mexico no more towns or villages, you say a lot of nonsense, Mexico is one from the most developed countries in Latin America, and why do you call me whitexican? Did you know that this word is discriminatory and racist, if you don't know, I'll explain, it means that because you're white you're not a true Mexican, which is really stupid
