I actually think Rice is more a natural 6 with 8 ability, but doesn't possess the intricate qualities we need as an 8 in our system. I think Rice carries the ball well when he has space to kick the ball past the defensder and run onto, but he's not really a guy that can be press resistant in tight spaces against 2 players. His natural 6 instincts tell him to pass back. I prefer an 8 with similar skills to Cazorla where he can dribble past players with ease and continuously advance the ball to break defensive lines. This is more efficient with ball progression and doesn't allow defenders to reset their formation when our midfielders pass back to our CBs. Arteta has pulled Odegaard back to help progress the ball and be that link-up player between defenders and forwards. With a new player that can do this as an 8, Odegaard can play further forward where he was last season and scored 15 goals and provided 7 assists. This season he's only scored 8 with 6 assists. With a new striker incoming this summer and a proper 8, Odegaard's goal numbers would be greater than this season's, but his assists would be definitely greater than any other season with a target man to find.

I think there's a bit of a 'Magic Eye' picture situation occuring in regards to Declan Rice, since it seems like the majority are simply incapable of seeing the scope of his potential in being played as an out and out box to box midfielder instead of as a pure defensive midfielder.
Maybe it's being taken as a slight against his prowess as a DM in suggesting that he vacate the role in order to accommodate a far too often unavailable Thomas Partey, whilst having committed themselves to the belief that the Jorginho - Rice double pivot is the best way forward and as such are being just a tad myopic to the restrictions and knock on effects that come with the Italian's defensive limitations that hinder the Englishman from being as dynamic as he is capable of being if unleashed from that anchoring position with a number one priority of intercepting danger before it impacts the defence and then using the ball to start attacks if possible.
No shame or discredit whatsoever in not seeing beyond the obvious since Chelsea once again did their Stevie Wonder thing when he was a fledgling center half, whilst it's no secret that some of the West ham faithful weren't initially too enamored with the notion of moving him from central defender to midfielder.

Havertz definitely up front. I would bring on Martinelli as a power sub. Is Partey ready? Not sure.
For summer transfers. I'd like to see 4 good signings:
1 - We need a 20+ goals a season striker.
2 - We need someone who can play left or right wing. Just to give Martinelli and Saka some rest.
3 - A defensive midfielder in the Partey/Jorginho role.
4 - And a left back because Tommy keeps getting injured. He's out for weeks. Comes back, plays a game or two then is mysteriously injured again.
As a bonus. maybe another gifted midfielder. Just to give Skipper a rest. He runs about like there's no tomorrow. But eventually, even Duracell Batteries need replacing.

I'm not sure why people are so obsessed with 20+ goals strikers. I'd just be happy with someone that can clinically finish when given the chance. Haaland leads with 20 goals but City have scored fewer goals than AFC. Fans need to learn that a new striker might not hit the ground running and hit 20 goals in his first season. I just want someone that can score 15goals a season but also produce 10 assists as a striker.

Imagine if Jesus was that clinical. Defenders wouldn't know if he's going to pass or stick the ball into the back of the net from 20 yards out. And since Granit left to win his German League title _(Something that Kane still can't do. Hehehe!),_ we still don't seem to have someone with the power he as from those 30 yard free kicks.

Havertz is great at midfield or striker by winning duels, blocks, goal threats, and passing. Some fans are obsessed with Partey, who disappointed continually lack of mobility.
Partey looks rusty I agree but when he’s on top form there’s no doubting his presence

They were already physically done by the sat night. Its obvious build up is struggling big time (guess why), and its affecting everything else down the chain. So, if they continue experimenting as in last 2 games, Im afraid nothing good will happen. Odi will continue to struggle, and most likely Rice will join Saka's cohort of downed pilots by the half time.

Partey is never a mistake prone, he is rusty due to long term injury but never a mistake prone
