- Maybe it’s just us, but we feel like the Toyota Starlet is really slept on. And every time we see one, we kinda fall in love. And this super clean example of one, with widebody work and TONS of period correct JDM details. AND a TRD race engine that was brought to the U.S. via suitcase. As far as KP61s go, this one is clean AND functional. Sick.

Without a doubt these guys are Filipinos, it was nice literally bringing that Legendary Car / Engine from PH to US for the Americans to see that awesome Car... In fact that Toyota 4K (if I'm not mistaken since that is a TRD one) is still being used until this day and age in most of Owner Type Jeep here in PH and I got one in my own Jeep, and I do really love it!

when wide body starlets became popular in the philippines in the 80s i remember seeing them in red and yellow only.....dark color hides the sexiness of the body.....that is missing the rear wing :D.....but still its beautiful......if i win the lotto, i will buy that

You Ree I grew in Manila the Philippine capital in the 80’s. Here’s a brief summary of the college car culture (UP, Ateneo, La Salle and UST) back then.
The cars that were popular then were Toyota Corona and Corolla that came in either a sedan or wagon, of course the Starlet, Mitsubishi Galant, Lancer and Mirage, Volkswagen Beetle, Fastback and Brasilia. During the early eighties the cars that came from the factories came out bone stock to make it more affordable. Since the cars had no options available there were two desired ways of “dressing up” your car. You can either import certain parts that will make your car look like a “euro” or a “US”version car. If I’m not mistaken “Jdm” versions started to pick up only when Honda started making cars in the country.
Cars that came from Europe at that time had options like rear fog lamps and headlamp wipers and washers. Parts that we desired from the U.S. was the “5 mile” bumper bumpers and split headlamps. Popular expensive wheel upgrades during those times were size 13 vintage Campagnolo Elektron, Cromodora Cd38, Minilite “banana”, Gotti, Compomotive, TRD Tosco and Enkie Apache mesh. The last two were most desirable mounted on Pirelli P7 F 175/50/13. Local wheel makers Rota, Rallye, Comodore and Silverwind were making the affordable knock offs. This is just a brief history. Hope this is helpful.

Very popular in the islands, fully modified. Reliable and fun.... Drop a GT 20valve black top engine in there and you have a beast.... Do some Mods and you have a Demon.

@@zensmylie5393 Nice, I own a 1997 ep91. It's the basemodel with only 75hp but i will turbocharge it in the future. Hopefully i will be able to reach 275 hp after i add a turbo

I own one kp60 from 81 probably stock engine i dont know if it is 2k or 3k cause the engine can rev over 7k i dont think 2k can handle this base on my research probably is 3k engine but im not sure... 3.9 final drive that gear is almost like a close ratio i can hit 6k in fifth gear with only 140+kmh something probably need a 4k to go faster is great car the handling is good the respond is there but still need some more torque will be swapping to 4k with minor mods hope my boy will be alot better 😅😅

I remember a friend brought me along slalom racing in Manila near PICC, back in the 80’s when I was 12.. Riding passenger’s side in a Red Starlet, with a 4A-GE + Weber 45 under the bonnet.. Fun, fun..
Really enjoyed seeing this car and hearing about it. The fact that it's a family project is great. It looks super cool and I bet it's fun to drive, thanks for sharing and best of luck with new projects.

yup I had a couple buddies back in the Philippines that had modded KP61's...One of the guys had a lowered one, no body kit with a 2T engine and twin side draft Weber carbs and the other dude had his car also lowered, no body kit with either a 2TG or 18RG that just ripped...

My dad bought his 82 Starlet and the parents would drive us to school in it (I was 14 years old). Now at I'm 53 and my mom and dad still drive this car everyday. Mom and Dad have plenty of cars but this is one of his favorite cars.
Ever since I saw you post on Instagram about this car I've been waiting for the video.
Starlets were big in British oval short track racing back in the eighties. There’s a few really well built street 2.2 pinto powered ones over here.

I had an 1981 Starlet. It was a very solid rear wheel drive car. It would slow down going 45-50 mph with the pedal floored on a slight incline road. It was so under powered that it got no better than 30 miles per gallon. I traded it in for a 1988 Honda CRX Si which was a pocket rocket.

Those little things can handle, sometime those things can out corner e36 m3s and 911 at the local canyons around the SFV and Los Angeles. We use to do canyon racing back in the 90s-2005 and we smoked some euro cars with our stock, but slammed on trd cut springs starlet.
Very cool! I actually got to meet them and learned my dad was friends with them, very quickly mr and my brother became great buddies with one of their sons, havent talked to them for a year or two now. Very nice video though!
Growing up in Honolulu, my friend/neighbor's father had an '81 Starlet also. I had a '69 VW BUG at the time. My Bug, and that Starlet weigh almost the same. My Bug was 1815 lbs. I thought that would have made a great play car, due to the RWD platform. To this day, I've seen maybe 4 or 5 Toyota Starlets total, so a modified one would've been kinda novel. Killer build! BTW, one of my classmates had a Datsun Station Wagon, all stock like the yellow one, in 1977. We were Freshman H.S. at the time. We cut class, and he'd drive 4 of us around. Very fond memories! Back in the days here in Denmark, we used to see quite alot of Starlets running around. These days are are all but gone. It’s a shame really, because the little 1.3l hatch is actually a really awesome platform. It revs like no ones buisness and the chassis is pretty good. Looking back at cars like this, it’s no wonder how the, now, legendary JDM cars came to be. Thank you for featuring this car, it is a beautiful car ❤️

Those twin DCOEs are sweet. SOO easy to swap jets, emulsion tubes, etc.. Had one on an old 72 MGB GT. Had to play around with the ignition advance springs & weights to wake it up down low because there is no vacuum off of the intake to help with ignition advance when you put your boot down. Do we have too much advance? Floor it in second from the bottom of a hill, when you hear "pebbles in a tin can" that's pinging, flirting with detonation. Back it off another degree or two and lock it down. Think analog ecu tuning with a screwdriver, timing light and your ears.

My Mate in New Zealand had a 82 coupe, wide bodykit, 9 inch with a small block 302 windsor, hi stall quick shift, street legal and when I left for Aussie, he swapped it out for a 13bpp turbo.

The starlet in the 80s was always racing at hunts point the Bronx they engine swap them with 1.8 Toyota engine then modified them with pistons Webber’s ,headers, exhaust head work even nitro and etc reminds me of the Bronx late 80s early 93

That Starlet brought back some good memories.....absolutely stunning....lived in the middle of no where and this car was my daily driver....at the age of 12 ....in 1982....just to get groceries, tractor parts and the liquor store for my old man which was 12 miles away.....
