She was actually pretty similar to Katherine before her parents' death. THIS Elena was who she truly was, that's why she couldn't help being drawn to Damon. The version Stefan met was a girl who was traumatized and grieving, he made her feel safe and protected. She even says that she loved him because he could never die like her parents did. Their love story was amazing, nothing was wrong with Stefan...but Elena was changing and growing. And as much as he loved her, I don't think he ever truly understood her. Stefan projected a lot of himself, his ideal qualities onto her...she represented everything he wanted to be. So much that he couldn't see her for who she was and couldn't accept her evolving into someone new. You can debate whether or not Damon "deserved" her but I'll say this. Damon saw her. The good, the bad and ugly. And he wanted her in every shape.

You could not have been more wrong. In the pilot episode, Delena was declared as endgame at least four times and indicated to meet first three times. Season 1, episode 4, and season 3, episode 8, have clues that Delena met first.
TVD is embedded with clues. It is just a matter of finding them. Once you do, the story becomes clear and exciting. For example, in the pilot episode, when Elena enters the cemetery, we see the cemetery epitaph saying that it was established in the year 1792. At the moment, Elena was 17 years old, and she was born in 92. That detail is one simple clue.

The scary thing is, I blame his compulsion for her staying wtih Stefan after she found out he's a vampire... she was surprisingly okay with a lot of stuff in S1 which I first blamed on the "cheesy romance" but if you think it through she was complelled to get "an all consuming love, passion and a bit of danger"... which is exactly what Stefan was in S1...

Stefan saves her life literally right after this and try not to forget that Damon was still in love with Katherine at this point. Meeting someone first doesn’t make you own them.

That’s why it’s stupid people say they’re toxic or not meant for each other. Stefan was an absolute perfect boyfriend a girl could wish for. He’s so nice so trustworthy and treats you the way that makes you feel safe and warm and spoiled. But Elena is not just a sweet girl like she looks. Inside she’s strong she doesn’t want to be covered/protected all the times. she wants a challenge, adventures she wants passion she wants freedom. And that’s what Damon can give her. That’s why she falls for him.
