Strength for the Journey - Bishop Barron's Sunday Sermon

  • Friends, we’re continuing our reading of the sixth chapter of the Gospel of John, which is all about the Eucharist. And here’s my take on our reading for today: A long trip by car or plane can be uncomfortable, even overwhelming. But we’re heading somewhere else; we’re on a journey. And on a long journey, you have to find sustenance to keep going.
    Mass Readings
    Reading 1 - 1 Kgs 19:4-8
    Psalm - Ps 34:2-3, 4-5, 6-7, 8-9
    Reading 2 - Eph 4:30-5:2

Hey friends, I hope this message reaches a few of you all. I’m currently living in a Protestant household and I have come to realize the validity and richness of the Catholic faith. I want to join through RCIA and begin the confirmation process, but my parents are quite opposed to such. I will start going to daily Mass soon, just to be in the presence of our Lord more fully. If I may, I ask for your prayers for me. Thank you all.

*Larry Burkett's book on "Giving and Tithing" drew me closer to God and helped my spirituality. 2020 was a year I literally lived it. I cashed in my life savings and gave it all away. My total giving amounted to 40,000 dollars. Everyone thought I was delusional. Today, 1 receive 85,000 dollars every two months. I have a property in Calabasas, CA, and travel a lot. God has promoted me more than once and opened doors for me to live beyond my dreams. God kept to his promises to and for me*

This homily helped me realize that I can’t make everything perfect in this life, so I should stop trying so hard and quit beating myself about it. It’s supposed to be hard here sometimes and I can’t keep that from happening. Our heavenly home will be perfect and our food for the journey will help us get there. As I reread my comments here, I know that I knew this already, but for some reason it has sunk in today and given me more hope. Thank you, Bishop Barron

God bless you Bishop. Your sermons are so encouraging. I am 81 years old. Don't watch the news. Last night I felt I should watch the news, and after I watched, I regretted watching. Why did I do that. My children and grandchildren are my joy. Going to mass and receiving the eucharist ,adoration, lunch with friends a few times a month is wonderful. But everything else is a ride long distance in a car, airplane, or a motel. Your sermon was wonderful.🙏🙏🙏

Those who hate their lives will keep it for life eternal. I love my life because Jesus in it. I love God's creation, nature, skies, stars, and the moon. Without the eucrist I feel that something is missing in me. And nope, before I was baptized Catholic, I did not enjoy travelling, five stars hotels or the five stars food. There was something missing. It's as if the area of enjoyment in my brain was blocked, obliterated, but the presence of Jesus activated it. Only thanking Jesus for what he gave me, the Catholic faith, for the children I have, and for his glorious creation around me, I can enjoy.

You are right, with all the suffering we can still enjoy life with Jesus dwelling in us. He is our joy. I enjoy being led by Jesus through good times and bad times knowing that He is allowing it to teach me something, it’s for a reason. And so I offer my suffering to Jesus to amend for others. That gives a meaning to my life.

Years ago, my elderly mother would rave and rave about Bishop Barron (BB!) who said or appeared at the Masses she attended at the Mission in Santa Barbara or Montecito. I hadn't quite returned to the Church yet and when I did return, I discovered BB and these videos and The Word on Fire--but BB was gone from our city. Rats, I just missed him! Well, thank God we have these wonderful, inspiring videos...here I am about to go visit my 97-year-old mother who is so unhappy and wants to die and she's angry that she isn't dying yet because she's so miserable with the food and housing and just tired about life. I'm going to play this video for her to encourage her to hang in there--and I think it will give her a little lift and she will be so happy that none other than Bishop Barron will be delivering this timely reminder. Thank you and God bless you BB.

As Bishop Barron says and as Peter, Paul and Hebrews also say, we are sojourners on earth but, you know, I'm not tired of this life, either. So many fun things happening -- with family, friends, politics, and almost daily new discoveries in medicine, science, technology, space, creativity in the arts, health and human behavior. It is all a gift from God -- as was the Garden of Eden -- and it's still a wonderful life, with the exception of airplane travel.

In the deeply secular culture we live in today, what a powerful message from BB. Like so much of teaching of Jesus, the idea that we are not meant for this world is a hard truth to take in. Here is an example of God’s grace. When we do finally accept this truth and allow Jesus to sustain us, the journey in this life opens up in the best way possible. Your life does not really begin until you first allow Christ to be the most important thing in your life.

Loved this homily padre Barron. Haven’t done this much laughing through a homily before. Trips and the stories we have from traveling are always hilarious. In the moment torture, chaos and danger, later, crying from laughing. May we laugh through life until we get there. May we be always prepared for the trip, may we help others along the way always. May we travel with the angels, may God be in our every word, every action, in all our senses. May we feel Him with us. May we bring our family and friends with us to the Eternal Kingdom. May we find Our Heavenly Father waiting with open arms. Thanks for the laughs and smiles. Bless you

For college graduation, I was given a trip to Europe. From JFK we took a small Portuguese plane. I sat in the last seat which was a bench like the back of an old bus. A European man with his suit jacket over his shoulders, sits next to me, smiles and orders a bottle of champagne. I naively thought the flight might have an unexpected perk. The continental mister drank the entire bottle by himself from New York to Portugal without so much as a nod in my direction. From then on the Lord was my travelling companion of choice.

I’ve been listening to your sermons for years, literally awestruck by your command of so many disparate subjects, theological, philosophical, secular, hell, baseball, too, for that matter. A certain fanboy dimension, long unconscious, probably factored into my not writing in the comments section before. Your erudition was intimidating, through no fault of your own. That being said, today’s homily of Bishop Barron on planes, trains, and automobiles, of bad nights in a bad hotel to get us to the centrality of the Eucharist as our sustenance to get us through the journey left me amazed in yet another way. Your candor and humanity came through here with a brilliance on par with that encyclopedic intellect of yours. I’ve always wondered how celebrating the sacrament of reconciliation would be like with you. Now I must make a pilgrimage to Minnesota and confess that I don’t understand a great many things that trouble me, including the reverence for Bob Dylan. You are uniquely qualified to enlighten my mind and unburden my soul from this seemingly unshakable inability to value Dylan more highly. Talk about thorns in Saint Paul’s flesh! Good Lord! In asynchronous communication such as this, things can get misconstrued and perceived as being facetious in a trivializing, disrespectful way. I can assure you that I’m very serious. Blessings! You are truly a treasure to the Church and one of the most edifying speakers I’ve ever encountered. Thank you.

Que todos vamos a otro lado, estamos en camino hacia nuestra verdadera Patria. Best place trip I ever had...Boston to LA
My family flew standby. Back then you had to dress up. It was always so stressful, never knowing if you'd get on or not. Anyway, we got upgraded to first class. It was a massive plane with recliners. The flight attendants brought us giant, hot, chocolate chip cookies and fresh hot towels for our face. There was a spiral staircase going to a second floor. It was like out of a movie. I was around 12 years old.
Incredible experience. Once in a lifetime, all the other flights I've taken since, have been nightmares 😂

Yet, how blessed we were to have a family, a car that functioned, and a place to go! Bishop Barron -
Another grear, rousing, and inspiring homily. Thank you. Regarding your future travel
Fly Aer Lingus to UK and Europe. My wife Ann (married 45 years) is from Coventry England. We have made the trip many times, including a thirteen hour ordeal non-stop from LAX to LHR on a TWA 747! We flew to Manchester via Aer Lingus (Ireland’s national airline) earlier this Summer. Aer Lingus is the best flying we’ve experienced! We were in coach and there was plenty of room and comfy seats, service was wonderful. VERY CLEAN.

Lord only you know the burdens I face as a single mom and Heavenly Father you can change them. Father God I’m in need of your guidance and support. Both of my sons are special needs and require so much from me. I’m overwhelmed at times. I need your help providing for my children. Lord I’m constantly struggling each month to pay rent and I struggle to buy groceries, for my sons I’m ashamed. Lord I come to you asking for help dealing with these issues.

It's about the money, Word on Fire latest accounting shows 38 million dollars in assets, how many videos does Barron intend to make, it's such hypocrisy and dishonesty, a lot of charities publish their yearly accounts on their websites but Barron is desperate to keep the accounts hidden, just dishonest.
