    On 14 February 2021, Carlos Saúl Menem, who was President of Argentina for two terms, passed away at the age of 90.
    We are talking about one of the most controversial figures in Argentine politics. There is no middle ground, depending on who you talk to either elevates him to the stars or demonizes him. Menem was a politician to the core, one of those social leaders who likes to be surrounded by famous people, such as sportsmen, artists and models, and who also has no qualms about saying one thing and then doing the opposite.
    However, the truth is that his period in the Casa Rosada was a sort of hiatus in what has been the usual trend in Argentine politics. Under the governments of Carlos Menem, changes came at full speed and for a time Argentina became one of the most fashionable countries in the world. However, things did not end well.
    What effect did Menem have on Argentina? How did he manage to make positive international headlines. Why did it all go downhill? In this video we give you all the details about one of the most fascinating political periods in Argentina's history.

      @@ArawnOfAnnwn I’m in the UK, where the media is completely ‘obsessed’ with the Middle East (mostly Saudi Arabia, Syria and the UAE) and China - other regions/countries hardly get mentioned, and when they are, they are rarely given much analysis. E.g. in my experience, it’s common for people not to know who the PM of Australia is (a country that I think is woefully ignored IMO). I think it’s great that VP want to spread knowledge about Argentina, an important country, that I think most British people (including myself) don’t know much about.

    Honestly, this video reminds me of my time in Argentina, we learned a lot about Menem and how his policies in the beginning created prosperity, but unfortunately the Argentine governments refusal to touch public spending on social services and convertibility really did cause problems. I honestly forgot about business reforms and such to help make Argentine businesses more competitive so that is another interesting take on the situation. Honestly if some of these changes were made i feel like argentina could have rebounded and returned to the glory days at the turn of the century.
    Edit: in reference to the end, i remember he had a few of economic advisors under him who actually recommended many of the policies. Many of these were students of the US's idea of neo-liberalism.

    Great analysis btw (ignore the haters!). I think in the end people oppose reform because they believe they will be on the losing side. The irony in Argentina’s case is that the lack of reform led to the economic collapse in 2001, devastating the middle class and the poorest - the very people who were probably the most opposed to reforms. I think to get ordinary people to support reform you need to tackle corruption amount the elites as well, without that I can’t see how Argentina (and similar countries) is going to get out the endless poverty trap it is in.

    One of problems in Latin America is that they only look to US/Europe for ideas. Having Japan as a model to follow (or to contrast with) is one of the reasons countries like South Korea, Taiwan, Singapore were able to rise. If you look at the second wave (now even the third) of Asian tigers, they still more or less follow that model. Latin American on the other hand is on opposite path.

    • @markonikolic7957
      @markonikolic7957 Před 3 lety +6

      Corruption seems to be their biggest problem. If they'd solve that problem and have a reasonable amount of corruption that is even remotely comparable to Europe, US or developed Asian countries I'm convinced all those countries could become much more decent countries immediately. Easier said than done though when corruption is ingrained in the mentality of the people.

    • @tavernburner3066
      @tavernburner3066 Před 3 lety +5

      The problem with the Asian model is it relies on a highly disciplined populace through strict laws. This is impractical in Latin America. The real problem with Latin America is how to put it. A mentality of exploitation and corruption left over from the old Spanish empire. Kruat and tea did a video on this I subject you go watch it.

      @RS-ls7mm Před 3 lety +3

      These are all strong capitalist countries with a hard working population (just the American parts of the US of course). Siesta seems to be the latino motto and corruption is so embedded in latino culture that its normal to them so I don't see things getting much better. Every city in the US that the latinos took over collapsed economically.

    • @gily3344
      @gily3344 Před 3 lety +2

      Nah it wouldn't last. You need East Asian mentality for this model to work.

      @@tavernburner3066 U should read Prof. Ha-Joon Chang of Cambridge Univ "Bad Samaritans". Chapter 9 titles is "Lazy Japanese and thieving Germans Are some cultures incapable of economic development?" Cultural explanations to economic development are not taken seriously at the academic level anymore. That was just a story created by the rich western countries to explain away their responsibilities towards the countries they decimated through colonization. Now a days, institutions are considered to be much more important. And having a export led economy creates all sorts of good incentives that create good institutions.

And yeah Argentina most famous for wheat and beef production, but all know-how, trains, combine harvesters, warehouses equipment made and produced outside Argentina, yeah after WWII beef and wheat prices was insane high, aftertime when USA turned switch to produce more for citizens purposes required technology, beef and wheat export prices plummeted down. All privatization In Argentina has spur taste, international companies don't have enough markets to expand and Argentina not have universities to invent know-how for own market. At least Argentina not big polluter from the 50 biggest population counties :)

  • @hl3493
    @hl3493 Před 3 lety +3

    I guess the main problem for every president (not only in Argentina) is that you can't really cut public spending without causing major disturbances. If you have a small government and you make it even smaller, not many people will loose their job/welfare. But if you have like 40% of the population working for the state or receiving welfare, and you'd need to cut that by say 25%, 10% of the entire population will be in serious problems which makes every politicians - no matter how charismatic - very unpopular.
    And I honestly have no idea how any democratic politician who wants to be reelected can solve that problem. Even if he sacrifices himself, his opponent will promise to undo these reforms and win the next election, so nothing is gained in the end.
    Democracies lead to bigger governments because politicians promise voters other people's money to get elected. Since I see no way to stop this, a situation like in Argentina is predictable in many Western countries. In 1900, the German state quota was below 20%. Now it's above 60%. Spending is increasing. Does not look good. Please prove me wrong.
    Saludos a Argentina,
    con todas sus problemas: es un hermoso país con gente muy amable y la mejor comida del mundo.

    The issues under discussion are obviously contentious to say the least, but on the whole I found the video well balanced (although painful to hear for Argentines). I basically agree with your description. Great crisis bring along big changes, and Argentina is no exception. The country going down the drain in 1989 more than Menem’s undoubted charisma prompted profound change more than anything else. By then a society and powerful power groups basically dedicated to protect their own petty interests at one point chickened out at the very real prospect of facing the abyss. Things were no different on Titanic before shaking hands with an iceberg. Everybody, all three classes and the crew were looking after their interests until disaster struck. That very split second interests abruptly changed, gone was the champagne, the dancing and everything else. The sole aim was a place on the boats. Society as a whole, politicians, trade unions, the army, business, you name it, suddenly accepted what until yesterday had been anathema. Foremost the culling of the revered state owned companies, sacred cows that offered a dismal service and lost money as if there was no tomorrow. This brought about substantial change, but after some time society grew complacent and thought that going back to the old ways, if done more moderately, would do no harm this time. Just like the recovered alcoholic who believes he can get away with just an occasional sip. Obviously in no time our man was half seas over once again. Fiscal discipline ought to have been maintained for a full generation. So we sadly ended up at square one. But let no one wail, or cancel the hossanas, this time we will try harder, and nationalize bananas!

What an amazing turn around he brought to his nation, (changes which came with quite a bit of corruption & negative consequences for many In sure). But in this as with all things, a leader has to make the choice between the greater evil or the little evil and in doing so can NEVER win the support of all. I get the impression that his opposition wasn’t to happy with losing their hegemony as a result of his sweeping changes and therefor actively worked against him behind the scenes, to the detriment of their own people. I find it quite sad & disappointing that all of his reforms, which benefited so many, were ultimately rolled back and that his people, while having a taste of stability were plunged back into instability & poverty 😩 What a complicated legacy to leave on ur nation, one fraught with epic highs and catastrophic lows.

    I’m here now for my second time. Lived here originally in 2011. I think it was 4-1 usd to peso at that time. Upon arrival this trip I was getting 390 - 1…yesterday 450 to 1. Every single day, your average Argentine loses money. THEY STILL ARE GOING TO VOTE THE SAME WAY. They seriously do not believe anything is their fault. Blame is placed outside of their political realm. What’s even crazier, they seem to believe they deserve more from the government. More spending! I know this is anecdotal but after attending 1 year of school here, multiple weeks here in my second trip spending a lot of time with porteños (who are insanely friendly to me) I just want to explode like why do you all not see something radically needs to change, I keep quiet. It’s not my country and they don’t want to hear a yanqui talking about their government even though it’s free game for them the other way. It’s sad to me because after traveling all over this country, it’s beautiful.

    Argentina needs substantial multi-generational structural reforms on culture, education, economy, and politics like removal of the collectivist socialist mindset in the Argentine psyche by purging left-leaning academics in the University of Buenos Aires that preach socialistic ideas to students. It needs to dismantle its powerful but destructive labor unions by imposing an Argentine version of the Taft-Hartley Act that institutionalizes union-busting at the national scale. It needs to do massive retrenchment of public sector labor force and bureaucratic simplification that some of its provinces like Formosa have to be fused into larger provinces or the individual municipal governments in Buenos Aires suburbs need to be dismantled as well and fused them into the Buenos Aires City proper.

      Argentinians are just not smart people. They enjoy the sensational feelings of nationalism and like free lunches. There is nothing can be done about the country other than a cultural change. It is needs other cultures to supplant the one that already exists in it. It needs a population dump of East Asians and Anglos and Germanic peoples onto them.

    Privativatisation of Sectors shown in 10:09 is and allways will be a dogsht move how can this be painted in a positive light. The only thing it does is you gain short Term capital and loose control over services, whose quality ppl rely on, which are now operated by privat companies under the provit motive. G fcking G.. And if the service where already dogsht before they got privatised, than this is a sign of way bigger underlying problems presumably with corruption, that will not be fixed through privatisation. Bad tongues would theorize, the privat sector, paid of some politicians, to make public services dogsht enough, so that there will be public support for privatisation, good thing that never happens tho.
