- From its outset, the story of Katana Zero is veiled in Mystery and Intrigue. Questions are answered as the game is played, but only more of them are raised - particularly at the conclusion of what is referred to as its First Act. Let's tell the story from the beginning to recap all we learned and to prepare ourselves for the inevitable Second Act.
I know this is a long winded explanation, but I wanted to tell the story as it's told to the player so it's like we have the full journey of the game in the video: start by knowing nothing and then learning just how deep the conspiracy goes.

That's all relative friend. As far as he's concerned time does slow down. He's moving faster than the others around him, which is inherently tied to the nature of time. If everything in the universe, were moving in the same direction, at the exact same speed, they would all suddenly seem as if they were standing. Time would stop. If they literally just moved precisely at the same speed and motion, there would be no motion. Your ability to perceive time, is time. They made that point when V took out his neighbors. They're dead to us, but they're still there. Right now. In hell. 11:30

Agreed. Also he mentioned that he was in the jungle for 28 year, but Zero is only 22. And maybe killing this scientist was Fifteen's mission, but he asked Zero for a "favor" to accomplish this task instead of him. But that's just my theories

In the "Kill the child" sequence, as it glitches away, you can just see the child turn into the girl fo a second. Thought that was neat.
Yo maybe the peasant child actually was the girl, and Zero's memory is just still a bit fucked? That would explain why she has the matching Behemoth to the Leviathan. She wouldn't have been afraid of Zero either, because when he shot the scientist, he was wearing a mask.

I was under the impression that there were 2 Zeros all the time in that sequence, even after beating the game, that's why i came to this vid lookin for answers
It's heavily implied that the girl was just a figment of Zero's imagination, that she is actually the manifestation of Zero's conscience, and there are multiple points to suggest this: like at the end, the landlady said that the man who is supposedly her "father" never actually had a daughter & he was just a junkie and the cops say that there aren't any children in the 3rd District; also, when Zero mentioned the girl to the masked men, one of them replied that "I didn't know you had a conscience".
I felt as though the “monster” ending was not a vision, or the mind of zero fighting the psychologist.
I think the psychologist did take the drugs and the drugs allowed him to mess with zeros mind. It then becomes a battle of zeros addiction versus himself. The giant monster is zero and the syringes are the addiction wanting to take hold. After the fight zero won, and didn’t have to take another dose. he was able to fight the withdrawal that every other null had fought and lost. Possible creating a “true ending” or “good ending”.
This is just how I saw it at least.

Is the swordsman actually japanese? The constant comments about his outfit being a "bathrobe" and him being obsessed with samurai flicks gave me the impression that he was just a weeaboo.
Here’s my theory: The Dragon (Null Fifteen) was the actual trained swordsman, carrying a blade during the war. Zero’s weapon of choice during the war is that pistol he uses to shoot the scientist. He wasn’t a swordsman, but he was quite aware of the awe-inspiring capabilities of Fifteen.
Between Behemoth and the Leviathan, between Zero and Fifteen (note how Zero’s katana glows bright red before The Dragon chops off V’s arm like how Behemoth glows before meeting with Leviathan), who was stronger?
Being an impressionable teen (albeit an unstoppable precognitive killing machine), he watches several samurai flicks and through Chronos-boosted super-training-montage, learns how to deflect bullets, slice with precision, and dodge like a pro.

Fifteen is still leagues better than Zero in swordsmanship, able to cut through several distant targets in less than a second. Zero is definitely a weeb who plays card games and watches anime whilst wearing a bathrobe but he’s definitely a cut above most weebs.
@@noellesato311 He did have training tho. When fighting V SNOW dashes at him to learn the art he uses - I can't remember which school she mentiones, but it has a japanese ring to to it. But the 'bathrobe' is still odd, and I don't think japanese 'samurais' would watch samurai movies.

Its been too long since I played the game, but I vaguely I remember there being a discrepancy between how long we're told the war lasted, and how long Zero claims to have been in it. Which, along with a lot of other stuff Zero says, leads me to believe that the time-distorting effects of chronos mean he has experienced 7 years in a shorter amount of time.
But that's vague, and I really wish I could remember for sure to satisfy myself and you.

When V talks about the eternal suffering the swordsman awaits, I think he is not referring to him dying over an over, but what happens as a consequence of the withdrawal of Chronos: time stopping indefinitely. V even mentions how the swordsman neighbour won't ever die from the neighbour's perspective, as he will be stuck in time, as V said, alone with his thoughts

Yes, choosing life involves repeating the same string of questions ad infinitum with tragedy and comedy, until you realize the only choice that advances the game is to choose death.
Wish this game had more lore to had me coming back and watch it all, sadly is all very dark and misterious. A serious underrated channel, yours right here.

I think the cathedral part is one of the most beautiful parts in any game ever. Also i believe that the person talking in that part is the dragon not zero as they share the same color text.

mmm I think you made a mistake when explaining the death of the psychologist, the mental boss battle and the head bashing resulted in two different end results: the boss battle left the psychologist with a sword in his head, the usual one left him with basically no head to speak of.
Also, the boss battle ended with zero leaving without using any drugs, while the normal one ended on him stocking up on several of them

I didn't hear a damn thing about this game until a few days ago when a video about flitting with the receptionist was brought up.
Then I watched a speedrun... then I saw a max screen shake speedrun... and now I just watched all of this. And I must say *_GOD DAMN_* does this have me hooked.
I hope that little girl gets rescued in the end of this whole series. If it does become a series, that is.

I don't mean to burst your bubble but it's implied that the little girl, Comedy, and Tragedy are hallucinations brought on by Chronos. Comedy and Tragedy are Zero's addiction and withdrawal personified, while the little girl is the last bit of morality he has left.
I'm not sure where I stand with the theory though. If the three are hallucinations, how did the little girl clean his apartment? How did Comedy and Tragedy kill an entire SWAT team at once?
I love this game because it really gets you questioning the in-game reality.

Katana Zero is my all-time favorite game of 2019 and I bought the game mid-September. Awesome vid!
I think that the psychotherapy and the normal endings are different because the psychologists body is in different places in the office depending on the endings. Also the method of death is different depending on the ending.
I also think they are different because in the end of the monster boss fight zero doesn’t take chronos. In my opinion the monster boss fight is zero overcoming his addiction. While in the normal ending killing the psychologist seems to solidify his addiction.
It’s crazy. I never did the doctors boss fight, after smashing his head the game ended for me

If you want to fight him, I think you have to agitate him in every way you can by interrupting him in every opportunity you have, except for two instances I believe.
This story "summary" narrarates every single thing that happened in the entire game.

I thought that Comedy and Tragedy were using their own wartime drugs, sort of like the psychiatrist was. It'd explain their strange powers, especially teleportation, killing the SWAT team, and being able to see Zero's future.

@@executivelifehacks6747 I thought about that too, but it doesn’t really make sense, at least with the information we have right now.
Not only does the Masked Men seemingly effortlessly kill an entire SWAT team that Zero would have died to, but that same SWAT team sees Tragedy when they appear. The little girl that hangs out with Zero also knows about the Masked Men, and it’s very heavily implied that they kidnap the girl at the end of the game, which would be weird if they were a reflection of Zero’s mind, since the last level’s revolution is him overcoming his child-killing instincts.
Don’t get me wrong, this is Katana Zero we are talking about here, so the story could take a path like that, I just don’t think the explanation works right now due to other people physically seeing and knowing them.

I belive that, as the Huntress can teleport around, Fifteen can dash and Snow can Teleport seemingly longer distances, Zero can cause those mass deaths we saw in Chinatown, but he can't use a power he doesn't remember having, however, in withdrawl he is capable of tapping into his own subcontious and unleash this power.
Also I belive the girl was a projection of Zero himself, perhaps a child he killed or just an idea to keep him sane and help him walk through the insanity of withdrawl, now, if V really gave the tape to the girl that we can't tell, most likely not. And given how he saw his psychiatrist and the girl dead, it's most likely a fear of harming those he feels some care for, specially the girl.
Some sort of hidden ability of Zero's could definitely explain that scene, and explain why he's so... Basic compared to Fifteen. Hopefully we get answers in the DLC or sequel.
The girl is definitely an interesting part of the game... Like you mention, we're not certain whether she's real or not, especially since no other characters interact with her. I initially thought she was related to the Psychologist (he mentions having a Daughter), but that is so unlikely due to the Psychologist isn't Zero's neighbor, or a drug addict. Unless there's so to be revealed information where we find out Zero's neighbor WAS the Psychologist the whole time, and he was just hallucinating him to be different. Idk. That's kind of wild. We'll have to wait for answers unfortunately... Lol.

And the worse part about the girl is that: okay, let's assume she's a figment of Zero's imagination *-one Harvard tier thesis breaking down what almost everything she does could mean-*- later- in all seriousness though, I really belive that our samurai is in that outfit really because of poor timing on the accident, so if we're to take the girl as a part of his mind trying to keep him healthy and sometimes, wholesome, maybe the Halloween part was meant to say that he is actually dressed in an costume from the day of the accident.
And, well, the cathedral sequence he mentions 27 years killing people in the war, but Zero's own assassination contract mentions he's 22, and the war was over 7 years ago so he would have been 15 during the war. There's some crazy aging/unexplainable time reference littered throughout the game it just squeezes my brain and make a beautiful looking pretzel out of it.
Also, it's interesting the fact that Zero was in such a state where he could not dodge/avoid/rewind to avoid the injury that made him amnesiac which probably suggests that to rewing one's gotta remember, but a bad hit to the head (or some brain surgery) could stop the nulls from rewinding before a certain point. Perhaps he was drunk as Comedy and Tragedy suggest he was a drunk. Maybe he tripper and hit his head.
That's a good point. I'd like to know why Zero (seemingly) doesn't remember anything from his injury in the war to the start of the game. That at least 7 year gap is really interesting to me. Is he like Leonard from Memento and can't form new memories? Is someone purposefully wiping his mind every so often so they can continue using his as a weapon? Or am I just overthinking that gap? Lol.
I like that thinking. I'd also mention the scene on the rooftop as significant too. It could be his mind/himself saying that he doesn't need to be who he was or who the Psychologist says he's supposed to be. He can shake that image, and become someone that he wants to be. Symbolized by him tossing the medal that represents his past , and accepting t who he is now as something that reminds him that he does good. Idk. I'm bad at explaining this kind of stuff on the fly. Lol.
You gotta remember that Chronos warps the user's perception of time, something Zero admits in that hallucination ("It's only been a week, but it feels like a year). Maybe it wasn't 28 years, but 28 weeks that were stretched out to feel like years thanks to his Chronos addiction. Or maybe that's not it at all. I've seen some people theorize that Chronos not only warps the user's perception of time, but may slow their aging process as well. Maybe Zero did fight for 28 years in the war, but the Chronos that had been pumped into him since he was a child slowed his aging so much that it seems like he's barely aged, kind of like Bilbo with the One Ring. He has the appearance of a 22 year old, but is faaaarrrr older. But then this doesn't hold up because it seems NULL were introduced fairly late into the conflict, and they turned the tide in New Mecca's favor (from the vets in the bar: "Six more months... We would've blown those fuckers out of the water." and "You know, we woulda fuckin won..."), but their very introduction also led to New Mecca's loss in the war (also from the vets: "...in the First District weren't bitching about the child killings." and "...maybe we woulda won if they'd left the fighting to real soldiers."). I think to answer these theories/questions, we'd need more information on that war which we just don't have yet.
I love that last point. Really good explanation as to why Zero's in the state he's in.
@@SquatchGamingChannel Well overthinking it is the beauty of these games that gives us crums when we want to know more, we are set to spiral out of control by what the devs are not telling us the bastards. But I think it'd be much more of a coincidence, if anything, a recent and tragic one, Zero gets drunk, stumbles, hits his head and becomes amnesiac, it's hard to beat a person just right over the head to give him strong amnesia without better odds of killing them.
And yea, I like that idea of the rooftop, maybe he comes to terms with letting go that man he doesn't know that lives along him through the medal as something new and better is being born. Now as I write this I realize that maybe that's what the masks meant, maybe that's the one life for another meant, that he had good things going for him, the girl, a new, young, softer side of himself he wants to protect and who's consciousness is burdened when he is drunk and stumbling, as he is letting go of his old persona and swearing to protect this new self, he ends up brutilizing his psychiatrists, embracing Chronos as that which will keep him alive, accepting that his nightmares were memories and that he was just a tool and will seek vengeance, a life of peace and serenity, moving forward from his duties as a hitman, killed, brutalized as he embraces Chronos, seeks to go for it and kill the responsables for what's happening, he forfeited the girls, this better path. The only thing I can't explain is who might have robbed his apartment, maybe Fifteen, but they also robbed the place next door, who was there to begin with? Many question comes as more things take a more discernable form.
Also, about that aging thing, we'd have to assume that the psychiatrist is just using Zero as a random Chronos junkie he found off the streets. Which might be why he is shown as a homeless man in that image with Comedy and Tragedy, but he doesn't know who he is, which is a bit contradictory at some points, I mean, he either knows or assumes that Zero has the power to stop peoples hearts as he blames him for the death of the police squad, but also says he's 22 in his file, which would make him a teen when the war happened, I mean the vets admit he is way too young to have been in the war, and if the psychiatrist has info on him as he was such a big psycho as a kid, he should know the minimum basics such as his real age, not his look like age. Now I got thinking, maybe he went into a full "freeze" as an effect of withdrawal, and was stuck in the jungle for a couple of years, stuck in place, but maybe, somehow he was saved, someone shot Chronos at him, perhaps Fifteen himself saved him and that explains him saying he was so long in the jungle, but how you keep a tap of how many specific years during that only the devs can say.
Also about the vets and killing children, maybe it was due to the NULL not knowing when to stop killing, and that image tortures Zero, naked peasants running for their lives and him not being able to stop himself, hell, if you don't talk to electro head and stick to not shedding blood in the prision, Zero's bloodthirst is released upon a poor, drunken man in the street, he has, what you greatfully called "an itch".
Oh fuck… perhaps Zero remembering in his dreams allowed him to undo some wrongs in that village. The events were: walk in, kill scientist, kill children. Then walk in, kill scientist, still kill children, then maybe through this memories he ended up not killing the child, and him and the kid looking so similar is because he either is a clone of his he had to do in himself, but maybe he just saved some hope by remembering, this going back to the past and not killing. God these theories they don't stop coming and I love it.
Idk if it's just me but the sprite of the shadow girl in zeros memory looks like the little girl you meet
Absolutely one of my favorite games. Period. Thank you for reminding me of this absolute masterpiece.
Well, what can I say? You've made a great video as always. Covered the whole story in an interesting way, changing your voice depending on the situation, having fun with the editing (Like in 16:35 for example) etc. Not sure if you could make something better in this video, I just hope I will see the next one pretty soon, but take your time if you need it. Making videos like this one requires not only time but skill, creativity and patience.

I never used the slow down time ability once you get the feeling for the game it feels sooo good to just play based on reaction
16:30-16:47 was pretty well done with how you had your narration repeat with the scripted glitching in that part, same for how you loop your narration for Zero waking up multiple times when he was captured by V, and he was using his precognition to figure out how to escape. You not only tell the story pretty well, but you also find ways to make it engaging and entertaining like those moments I described! It also doubles up how these are moments in the game that break away from the standard formula because of unique scripted events that you wouldn’t see in most other levels, like the scripted glitching and looping. Keep up the good work, man! :)

his abilities don’t actually make him slow down time or rewind it, they allow him to change his perception of time and plan ahead so flawlessly it appears he is looking into the future

OMG I Can't believe You're back and reviewing one of my favorite 2019 games. This side scroller was a total gem when I launched it I was about to only try it for a bit cause I wasn't that Intrested in it but I ended up finishing the game in one go. I really like your narration, even more than the story itself. I've taken some notes on your script from this video. This is my theory - Juncture, the company behind pretty much everything being manufactured in New Mecca (soda bottles, Studio 51) is the main funder of Chronos and was the main funder of the NULL program. The Dragon has Juncture on the board while he stands and looks at it, implying that he thinks they play some responsibility.
I agree with you there, but it's all just speculation right now. Lol. I have a few questions surrounding Juncture that I want answered, but I'll have to wait for the follow up to answer those!

to get the trippy psychologist boss ending you have to do a red response and hang up on him at every possible moment except mission 3 or 4, where you have to talk to electrohead, and then later in the psychologist's office go through a certain series of responses to refuse medication

I assumed it was Al-Qasim's family. Maybe his daughter and grandchildren. I haven't seen any confirmation on who exactly they are though.

He was supposed to clean up any lose ends relating to Al-Qasim. Turns out those loose ends were his family, who he'd locked up in a vault to protect them since he knew the government would be coming after him.

I only really have one problem with the summery and that would be with the end. The therapist injecting himself with the wartime drugs isn't in your mind. The rest of the fight is but that's the side effect of the drugs the therapist took. He's mind raping the swordsman Cronenberg's "Scanners" style, that's what the drug he used was for which is why when the fight is over you're both in your respective seats. He propped your seizing, comatose body in the chair, took a seat himself and was likely going to keep probing your mind until it was a slush, it's only because you win the "fight" you were able resist for just long enough to chuck your sword through his head and end the control he had on you. There were drugs presumably with all sorts of effects made to make war other then Chronos (the name of which belonged to the Greek god of time, so I guess the appropriate name for whatever the therapist took would be Hypnos: Greek god of sleep/the mind).
Guess what I'm getting at with this long pointless ramble about vidya gems is that the two endings are very much two different scenarios.. so.. ye.. I liked your video :P
I totally understand! Reason I didn't go too in depth with the surprise fight was that I wanted to have both endings seem like they happen instead of one or the other. I think your explanation of how it plays out sums it up perfectly though! Thanks so much for sharing!

I hope that in the DLC whatever drug the Psychiatrist took is elaborated and expanded on. The idea of a drug that rivals Chronos is interesting.

And there are instances were he says you've been an interesting subject or you have survived long enough or something like that. We could say it was all scripted but that's a bit farfetched

Just beat the game and I was really suprised how great and gripping the story was I love when game mechanics tie into the plot

The two big mysteries that still interest me about the story is what the dudes in vats were and whether the girl was a delusion.
Maybe the girl was the rest of zero’s humanity and innocence grappling with his mind?
