On a rainy, cold day, its great to have a space to work and create. In my garage I love to build simple bird houses and mason bee / native pollinator support homes. Using mainly scrap wood and old roof metal, I'm able to build sturdy, long lasting housing for all our little flying friends to feel comfortable, stay dry, and hopefully have a good life!
Here is a link to one of many lists of common bird house dimensions...

That's great, Sean! Very nice!
Thanks!
good job!
That is out-bloomin-rageous. I can't believe you could do that! I thought we brits had a monopoly on irony!!!
Nice editing.
Really!? Whoa. I've never gotten that comment before. I tend to think everything I do is incredibly amateur. But maybe you're being sarcastic! :),
No!! I like the inset photos as you discuss! I'm pretty good about winky facing when I am being sarcastic!
If you make bluebird houses make sure you put them on the perimeter of your property they're very territorial don't want to be attacked while working in your beds
Thats good info, thank you.
Two questions. When is the right time to renovate the bird houses? Do the bee houses need renovated/new bamboo and if so, when?
I will say I'm still very new to this, so I won't offer specific advise. I think there would be better videos / websites on that. BUT I try to get out and clear out old nesting material from the birdhouses late winter so they are ready for when the birds arrive. The mason bee homes need to be renovated every year or two. Take out all old tubes, with bees or not, and put them in a cardboard box with a little hole in it. That goes somewhere out of the rain so they can hatch and fly out. In the home you replace with fresh bamboo and japanese knotweed. I'll put a video out on that soon enough...
whoops, that was supposed to go on the lumber master 3000 preview!!! Very funny
I can do that, soo simple no need to over complicate things thanks
Damn straight, keep it simple. Fancy is for someone else!
Do you have a link to that reference site on sizes and bird species?
Thanks for asking, I added a link in the description to one that I've used before. Searching for 'common bird house dimensions' is a great way to go, or searching for the bird you want will get you right there. Thanks!
Thanks! Hugely informative as always. Love your vids :)
I've been doing seven of them but my bird keep biting them it's all gone what should I do please help me
Biting them? You mean destroying them or just chewing around the entrance hole? If just chewing around the hole, that seems normal. Most of mine get 'modified' by the birds to suit their own needs.
ha ... you went for it... said tit mouse +1
What about bat houses? Do you have bat's there? I have bat's that fly around my property at night. I say they come from the cave down the road.
We have bats at the main nursery, but I haven't seen them at our smaller space. A friend just gifted me a bat house, I need to set it up and learn about them!
It's a shame you didn't make kitchen window sill boxes from the birdhouse scraps and fill them with chives or whatever.
