    Genuinely one of my favourite Bolt Action battle reports I’ve ever watched. The close up shots were great; really making it feel like you were involved in the game. The models and tables look amazing too. Really inspiring to replicate the scenery. I’ll definitely be copying the carpet tile roads. Love the smoke for the preliminary bombardment and the exploded tanks.

      Thank you Scott, very kind words it’s appreciated. I hope to have another battle video done within the next couple of weeks and again it will be Normandy, Brits v German. Glad you like the carpet idea, it appears a lot of other gamers do as well. It’s simple, cheap, flexible and works well, just experiment with the dry brushing for the effect you like best.

    Great BA BR vid! Earned a subscribe from me! The pace was great! Would like to have more top-down/overhead shots to help keep up with that speed. The star of the show, though, has to be your terrain. I mean, wow!! You did an incredible job from end to end! the materials sourced are genius, and the scale you maintain is perfect throughout the entire table, pure work of art. From buildings large and small, to trees, to hedgerows, it all fit the scale and each other perfectly. The balance between adding in lots of small detail, and maintaining 'playability' was struck precisely. Bravo! Job well done! cant wait to see more, and i really hope you do your own terrain vids, too. There's plennty of room for your terrain vids, and we'd all love to see them. Cheers, and happy gaming!

      Wow Peter thank you very much indeed 👍 I’ve been a gamer/modeller for over 40 years and was inspired back in the 80’s by Peter Gilder, Ian weekly and Barry Edwards. To that end I have always tried to make my terrain look pleasing to the eye and playable. I like scratch building stuff as it’s part of the ‘old’ hobby instilled in me I guess. I’m not sure I’d be good at doing a terrain building video but I’m definitely going to do more BA reports as I really like the game mechanics (if not the points system 😂) and may do a bit more in the intro’s to explain how I make certain features. Thanks again for the kind words 👍

    Some great terrain ideas there. Not sure how the list building was arrived at some explanation of that would've been handy - too many tanks in the British army? A few other anomalies like the Stummel firing at the squad in the building - it's D3 pins. I'm sure you're aware of these though.

    • @dazvanderyoung1911
      @dazvanderyoung1911  Před 2 lety +1

      Cheers Baz 👍 I made quite a few mistakes looking back because I was concentrating so much on the videoing 😂 I will do things differently next time and go through the lists and scenario a bit more and have to admit for the first go I just chucked some models in for good measure, hence the Churchills. I’m an old Rapid Fire gamer and do like the unit structure as opposed to the points system 🤔 In the future I do aim to replicate some historic battles from Normandy as its my favourite period of WW2 and a place we love to visit. Glad you like the terrain and thanks for the feedback 👍

    • @dazvanderyoung1911
      @dazvanderyoung1911  Před rokem +1

      Thank you Tezz it’s appreciated 👍 The walls are textured with PVA then sprinkling fine sand over the clear wall areas not the raised brick details etc. The roofs are strips of cardboard around 2cm wide with cuts every 8mm or so but only halfway across so that the strips can be layered on top of each other creating the roof slate look. I’m going to try and do a quick terrain video on roads and bocage but will look to add a quick edit on roofs and texturing walls 👍

    • @dazvanderyoung1911
      @dazvanderyoung1911  Před 2 lety +1

      Cheers Benjamin 👍 I cover all my building with a ‘wash’ of polyfilla (spakle in the US) which is basically watered down so it runs everywhere and sets hard preventing PVA from warping it etc. I then cover them with PVA (again very slightly watered) and then add very fine builders sand. Once dry I spray paint and then drybrush up to a lighter shade until I’m happy with it.

    Excellent video, one thing we do, for Normandy, is to mark on a map, the deployment of the Germans,, it makes it more realistic, the first thing the advancing army realises is when it comes under attack, obviously a recce unit, can use that rule.

    • @dazvanderyoung1911
      @dazvanderyoung1911  Před rokem +1

      Thanks again Colin and yes I’m looking at ways to simulate a real ambush or advancing straight down the barrel of an 88 without knowing it. We used to draw maps for dispositions years ago playing Rapid Fire in 20mm but its just something we kind of stopped doing. Your right though its how a wargame should be played. Quite like the idea of counters or markers on the table as well but some would be ‘blanks’ until reached or declared if that makes sense.

    You miss a lot of hits in your hurry to move through turns, especially with the Germans I noticed. Also, against regular non-Germans, always take out the NCOs for the reduction in leadership. The game is about pins and morale. Also why the heck did you keep moving the PZ4 forward? Panzers should have needed 3s if they were point blank. I wonder if you are intentionally running the Germans less efficiently as you are the British.

    • @dazvanderyoung1911
      @dazvanderyoung1911  Před rokem

      You’re right Redcorsair I made a lot of mistakes as this was my very first BA video report. I’ve done another two since this one and think I’m improving slowly with each one. It’s a lot harder than it looks as I’m trying to keep the videos around 30 minutes as any longer and I get bored let alone anybody else 😂 As for the German Pz IV advancing? The devil made me do it 😜

  • @mike80555
    @mike80555 Před 2 lety +1

    I only skimmed through the video after I saw that the British were incredibly overpowered. I mean just at first guess I’m betting the british had an extra 500 points than the Germans. Can’t have that many tanks in the platoon. No idea how it was a draw in the end. Should of been pretty one sided.

    • @dazvanderyoung1911
      @dazvanderyoung1911  Před 2 lety +1

      Army point totals and victory points are of course the mainstay of the game and for competition play, set in stone. However I feel BA players need to let their imaginations go a bit and look more at historical scenarios and ‘up scaling’ their forces to fight bigger battles. What I mean by that is as follows, sections become companies, companies become battalions and so on and so on. A tank squadron would equate to 3 to 4 tanks and an infantry battalion (British as an example) would be 4 x 10 men companies, a HQ section, PIAT team Mortar platoon and a machine gun platoon. Using this basic formula you can recreate bigger Brigade size actions an beyond. A good example of this system is used by Rapid Fire order of battle books all of which stem in principle from the scales used by Peter Gilder back in the 80’s. If you look at Normandy as an example, the Germans very rarely had equality of numbers and were often heavily outnumbered yet pulled off defensive miracles time and time again. British attacks often went in with Battalions supported by a squadron of tanks, not to mention entire artillery regiments, which caused more casualties per side than small arms or tank fire combined.

    • @Tabletop_Hobbies
      @Tabletop_Hobbies Před 2 lety +1

      BA often gives the Attackers a 25-50% points advantage. This is because as we see here, the attackers are moving and missing shots (needing a lot of “7s” to hit). They’re also often in the open driving towards the enemy positions. Defenders get to stay put more often and should in theory be in hard cover much of that time.
