  • This is my 400th video on this channel and it comes from my 2nd visit to Slough on the Great Western Main Line and the Windsor Branch Line featuring services from Great Western Railway and TFL Rail
Slough originally opened on June 1st 1840 2 years after the GWML opened however the reason for this at the time was when an Act was passed to originally construct the GWML it was obtained a clause that forbids the construction of the station within 3 miles of nearby Eton College.
The location of today's present station dates from September 5th 1884 when it was re-sited 220 yards west of the original station location.
From March 1st 1883 to September 30th 1885 the original Metropolitan District Railway ran beyond Ealing today's Ealing Broadway to Windsor & Eton Central with services starting from Mansion House however it wasn't economically viable and the service was abandoned altogether.
There are 5 platforms with Platform 1 being served by terminating services from Windsor & Eton Central which opened in 1849 at the same as the LSWR opened Windsor & Eton Riverside.
Windsor Services provided by Class 165 and 166 Turbo however turnaround times are particularly tight with it being 8 minutes at Slough and 4 minutes at Windsor & Eton Central.
Although there is a connecting to the Windsor line however it's nowadays only used either by Engineer Trains or ECS movements to and from Reading Traincare Depot.
Platforms 2 and 3 on the fast lines have a mixture of passing through services however half hourly services to Oxford and beyond via the Cotswolds Line to destinations such as Worcester Shrub Hill, Worcester Foregate Street, Great Malvern and Hereford call here with all Intercity services provided by Class 800 and 802 IETs the only notable exception of passing services thats not a IET is the London to Newbury services served by Class 387s
Platforms 4 and 5 all used by TFL Rail Class 345s on the all stopping Reading services with semi fast Didcot Parkway services provided by Class 387s normally half hourly however at the time of filming it was hourly.
The front of Platform 5 originally did have a bay Platform of Platform 6 can could only accommodate a 3 car Turbo however was removed in January 2018 when Electric trains began running.
Crossrail was due to run fully in 2019 however at the time of filming due to complex issues from testing to late fitting out of stations as well as a pandemic meant opening of the 1st section won't be until early 2022 although full running won't be until May 2023 through to Shenfield from Reading whilst Abbey Wood services will run from Heathrow Terminal 4 and occasionally Terminal 5.
Although even in a pandemic which troubling times may remain for now however one thing that hasn't been lost is the stations intimidating reputation.
