    Gloucester Docks played an essential role during the two World Wars as a strategic port for the transportation of troops, weapons, and supplies. During the First World War, the docks were used as a base for minesweepers and anti-submarine vessels. In addition, Gloucester was an important railway centre, and the railway lines from the docks to the rest of the country were used to transport troops and equipment.
