I’m from Connecticut and was raised in Massachusetts. I moved to Alabama and it was the best decision I have ever made the food is great the people are charming and the weather is always beautiful .. it’s not all beat down and bad like people make it seem I’m A black female and have made a lot of white friends and a lot of the older white people down here love me !! Don’t judge unless you’ve been here yourself . I live in a city in the outskirts of Birmingham called graysville 😌 it’s quiet has a lot of beautiful nature as does the whole state lol but I’m close to everything so when it’s time to have fun I’m not far from other states and cities ! No place like the south 🌸☀️✨🔥🏕

I agree, I'm from Mississippi and lived all over the south even in the Midwest. Besides Florida, Alabama comes in second to me for beauty and livability. I live in Hoover now and it has been the best place I ever live. Being near beautiful hills and mountains in one of the best Suburbs in the state in the middle of other major cities and beaches is a plus for me. Also the air quality is magnificent. Alabama has won me over.

Lived & worked in Birmingham for the past 2 years--it's great!
Very affordable ($979/mo for a 1 BR with downtown view), lots of breweries, a whole bunch of snazzy cocktail bars, never had a commute longer than 10 minutes to work, great live music scene (or at least there was pre-March 2020), & the restaurants here will really surprise you.
Not just your cliché barbecue places, either--I'm talking about really good seafood (Hot & Hot and Automatic are both excellent), French (Bottega), pizza (Slice is kickass), and some great Indian places (Bay Leaf in Five Points!). AND there's lots of places to get outside! Vulcan Trail is great, Red Mountain Park is 15 minutes from downtown, Ruffner is 20 minutes, Oak Mountain is 25.
Critiques? Not the most walkable place--you'll need a car. Biking is very dangerous if you're not on a trail or in a bike lane. The drivers here are pretty atrocious in & around the city. There's a noticeable litter problem here, too--it's just not enforced. There are without a doubt sketchy neighborhoods I wouldn't venture to. Crime is bad in a few pockets of the city, but overall, trends have gone down in the past 5ish years.
Overall, Birmingham is worth checking it out if you're trying to escape to a Southern city that isn't named Nashville or Atlanta!

The cons, among them our corrupt government, more people are liberal here despite geographically mostly being conservative, income and property taxes are through the roof and the weather is cold and wet for more than half the year. Not to mention the protests as seen in the news. And yet so many keep moving here thus raising our cost of living.

From what I can tell, AL continued to offer Constitutional freedoms during the plandemic just like much of TN. Plus, radon isn't as much of an issue here as it is throughout TN. So, terrific people, little radon, lots of museums and fossil hunting, plus some gorgeous coastline have me seriously thinking about moving here. The only thing terrifying me is the sheer volume of money their outgoing Senator has managed to appropriate for the government presence in Huntsville. Federal shenanigans in Oak Ridge, Memphis, and even Charlotte NC tell me that Huntsville will eventually pose problems that the locals probably won't be able to contain or even realize they should.

If you like to stay at Camp Grounds on your Biking adventure rides most are open year round. Best of all are people you meet that are friendly and helpful if you need it.
