Let's be honest, despite what big brands hype up through marketing, most football boot "tech" does little to nothing to benefit performance. But every once in a while, we get something truly revolutionary! Nike might have just done that.
After a long 2 year wait, we can finally take a closer look at the Nike Mercurial Air Zoom Ultra! It features a very unique soleplate construction, that incorporates a full-length 4.5mm thick zoom unit, taken from the KD 12 basketball shoes. Why? Well, according to Nike, the tech is all about energy return, and it's a game changer! But is that the truth? How do they actually feel? I share my experience with this new tech, including the feel of the new 3D printed textile upper, giving you a really good idea of what to expect from the future of Nike football boots! Do you think Air Zoom is the next big technology in football boots?

If I'm being honest, the Air Zoom tech isn't that useful on natural grass. It's already a pretty soft surface most of the times.
It'd be more useful on turf boots, as it's basically carpet on top of a concrete base, where cushioning takes more importance.

I feel like they should concentrate the zoom cushioning under the studs themselves, where pressure will be highest

Two issues with that. 1.) An inconsistent feel underfoot. Going from foam to air and back to foam in a bunch of places with result in lumps and bumps that would be very uncomfortable underfoot. 2.) when the air bags are that small the area for the pressure to disperse is non existent. They would need to be so hard that they would be uncomfortable or they would be soft and mushy and not provide the desired effect. The only way around that would be tubes between them to allow them send air back and forth but that would be too thick and cumbersome for a football boot. Maybe someday they could make it work. But the tech is not nearly there yet.

Nike used a full length zoom unit (it was in the insole, not built into the boot) in 1996/7 on the Air Rio Zoom boots. It’s my opinion that this is the best boot Nike has ever made. It might have been before your time.

Nike tried the full length zoom last year in the Infinity Tour golf shoes…despite the hype the shoe was a flop, being too unstable and narrow. The recent updates version ditched the full length zoom for two zoom pods on the ball of the foot similar to the next% running shoes….
It kind of feels like Nike throws running shoe tech at their golf shoes and sees what sticks…does it feel like that with these?

I’ve used my pair for three practice sessions, four pick up sessions, and three full-field games. And they seemed pretty comfy compared to my tiempo legends. No stud pressure and they feel amazing on my feet. Is it the zoom unit? Could be but the fields I play on are really nice so it might be a big part due to the field. I don’t feel any “energy return” but still a good boot.

I think the grass is soft and absorbing so the zoom air unit doesn't have a solid foundation to build on, training your legs is just more beneficial than a piece of tech, I love zoom on the hardwood playing basketball, but I prefer barefoot feelings running on the grass

After some sleep, my previous comment reminds me of the Umbro UX Accuro 3 with the foam on forefoot/toebox area, etc. I looked at what they are offering now and they have two K-Leather boots, one with IDRO K-Leather, both with the D3O tech, that they call the Tocco Pro and the upcoming Tocco 2. They describe the boots as "the superior control of a classic leather boot with the lightweight profile of a speed boot." I always remember that Umbro boots tend to be narrow and usually do not suit people with wide feet.
Ever considered a review of them?

As someone who's worn Nike Vapor Carbon Flys (Am. football/lacrosse cleats) which had Air Zoom pods, all the way back in 2010s, I can say while Zoom is bloody comfortable as a cushion, it has no business taunting about "responsiveness"/"energy return", especially so with a full-length unit. I forgot if it's ever been implemented in baseball cleats as well, but fundamentally you can't have a zoom unit thick enough to be bouncy and thin enough to be used in a cleat, you know, the whole can't have the cake and eat it too thing. Can't believe they're still trying to pass it off as an energy return tech

Everytime Josh said impact protection I was thinking if there was a layer from the bottom of the laces to the toe box as well, I wonder if it would provide protection for the forefoot and how it would impact of striking the ball. Comfort, some protection and maybe some energy directed into the ball?
