  • It's a serious question! A lot has changed in the Chinese Automotive industry since I bought my Chinese car 8 years ago, come and find out if Chinese cars can now stand up to their international competition.
    The automotive industry in China has been the largest in the world measured by automobile unit production since 2008. Since 2009, annual production of automobiles in China exceeds that of the European Union or that of the United States and Japan combined.
    The traditional "Big Four" domestic car manufacturers are SAIC Motor, Dongfeng, FAW and Chang’an. Other Chinese car manufacturers are Beijing Automotive Group, Brilliance Automotive, BYD, Chery, Geely, Jianghuai (JAC), Great Wall, and Guangzhou Automobile Group. In addition, several multinational manufacturers have partnerships with domestic manufacturers.
    While most of the cars manufactured in China are sold within China, exports reached 814,300 units in 2011. China's home market provides its automakers a solid base and Chinese economic planners hope to build globally competitive auto companies that will become more and more attractive and reliable over the years.
    China's automobile industry had mainly Soviet origins (plants and licensed auto design were founded in the 1950s, with the help of the USSR) and had small volumes for the first 30 years of the republic, not exceeding 100-200 thousands per year. Since the early 1990s, it has developed rapidly. China's annual automobile production capacity first exceeded one million in 1992. By 2000, China was producing over two million vehicles. After China's entry into the World Trade Organization (WTO) in 2001, the development of the automobile market accelerated further. Between 2002 and 2007, China's national automobile market grew by an average 21 percent, or one million vehicles year-on-year. In 2009, China produced 13.79 million automobiles, of which 8 million were passenger cars and 3.41 million were commercial vehicles and surpassed the United States as the world's largest automobile producer by volume. In 2010, both sales and production topped 18 million units, with 13.76 million passenger cars delivered, in each case the largest by any nation in history. In 2014, total vehicle production in China reached 23.720 million, accounting for 26% of global automotive production.
    The number of registered cars, buses, vans, and trucks on the road in China reached 62 million in 2009, and is expected to exceed 200 million by 2020. The consultancy McKinsey & Company estimates that China's car market will grow tenfold between 2005 and 2030.
    The main industry group for the Chinese automotive industry is the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (中国汽车工业协会).

    I'm a engineer who works in a Chinese vehicle manufacturer,I agree with u. There are some Chinese vehicle companies that have stepped out of the old time like "Geely", "Changan","BYD" as well as "WEY", but there are still several companies making knock-offs like "Land wind" and "众泰",we consider these two companies a shame. However, Chinese vehicle companies are rapidly improving, there are several very successful types that go in to the luxury segment, like "WEY","GAC" and "LYNK&CO". I'm also sure that in the foreseeable future, more and more Chinese will choose the local brands if they can offer the same quality with lower price.

Here in the US we are great at something’s and at other things we need to get better and be better. What’s most important is what we do to correct our flaws. I always thought that the 12 year registration limit (after which a car had to be "recycled"), was a way of taking over the world's steel supply. But it's been changed now to 15 years, and is even renewable after that time.

    Quite a good report thank you.
    I agree with most of what you said and speak with some experience. I bought a used Great Wall / Haval X240 about 4 years ago, indeed it was far cheaper than anything else in the same class.
    I shipped the vehicle to Port Moresby and used it on a plantation 100 kms from town. I've been ruthlessly hard on it, plowed through mud and slush, overloaded it constantly, hauled logs to the sawmill and generally mistreated it. Unbelievably, the vehicle has never let me down. I have, however, strictly maintained and serviced it and am satisfied with the service its given me. I agree that it lacks refinement and modern technology but I'm happy with it and its paid for itself 4 times over.

      Tim Prosser I once worked with Great Wall Auto on a certain project. And tell what, they admitted they copied everything from everybody else. They’d buy a brand new Toyota Corolla and tear it apart and then study every single component of the Toyota. Three months later they’d come up with a replica which they call “the Great Wall 3 or 7” .That’s how they started their business. But, thanks to the government subsidization, in twenty years they have grown from a family-owned garage into a multinational conglomerate. Now they are making cars for many developing countries. They are exporting pickup trucks even to developed countries such as Australia. Talking about a $3000 brand new pickup truck that lasts 10 years- you can’t beat it!

    • @timprosser186
      @timprosser186 Před 5 lety +2

      @@yaohuang6337 Thanks Yao Huang. Sorry I have not responded sooner, I've only just seen your comment.
      Great Wall is not the only company that copied other cars. I don't like the practice but the Japanese did similarly when establishing their vehicle manufacturing 50 or more years ago.
      A huge number of inventions come from the West and many of those are perfected in Asia, the transistor radios and laptop computers are two examples.
      The West complains but still wants cheaper products from Asia, a commercial example of supply and demand.
      Great Wall and Haval build reasonable quality vehicles at a very competitive price. There is a market in Australia for those vehicles but their strategy is very faulty. Hyundai and Kia were thought to be rubbish when first exported to Australia but through good marketing and advertising they are now very successful.

    • @yaohuang6337
      @yaohuang6337 Před 5 lety

      Tim Prosser I agree with you regarding Chinese companies’ overseas marketing strategies. They don’t know much about Australia and the rest of world, and they don’t even bother to study the market. As far as I know, the only channel for Great Wall Auto to sell their cars overseas is through the local auto show in a foreign country. They’d go to Places like Addis Ababa to sell their pickups. I was once offered a job as their international sales director but I declined it, cus their pay plan sucked..

    I had a great time earlier this year in Turpan, Xinjiang province, where there is a huge hot weather vehicle test centre there. All around the city were many prototype cars, covered in their camouflage wrappings and instrumentation. I have noticed a big difference over the past decade with the quality control becoming better. If you plan on doing a "Conquering Western China" series, I know you would enjoy it there except they don't take too kindly to people photographing or filming the prototypes (despite being on public roads).

    Any reasonable man should understand the following facts:
    1. The whole environment of China (history, time, education, political system) causes poor capability of management for all of the industries in China. Poor capability of management causes inefficiencies.
    2. Inefficiency doesn't mean no good at all. It actually means relatively "less good, more bad". Say 100 cars out of the factory, for Honda, 5 of them are more likely have problems; while for FAW (you never heard of it probably), 25 of them are more likely have problems.
    3. State owned companies are much more inefficiency than private companies. Because unfair shit happens much more in State owned entities. Unfairness results inefficiency.
    4. Put the quality aside, you can get the same configuration at a pretty lower price. So if you didn't get the 25% bad product, you actually save a lot of money. That's why more than 10 million local made cars sold each year in China. Do you really think all of them are bad?

    JD Power & Associates: "The domestic Chinese brands are closing the gap on the international brands in 2016, narrowing the difference to 14 PP100, compared with a difference of 22 PP100 in 2015." IMHO, in fossil fuel car arena, it's very hard for China to catch up. However in electric car/driver-less car arena, they get a chance to leapfrog. I would love to see a revisit of this subject five years from now.

    • @nicholasmaximillian9891
      @nicholasmaximillian9891 Před 6 lety +8

      I'd say it depends on the price you're willing to pay, for entry level cars, some Chinese cars, in general, are superior in term of quality and features, they simply offer more options for the same amount of money.
      For example, the new Haval H6C is often compared with Kia Sportage, but the former offers more modern turbocharged engine, more torque, panoramic sunroof , bright LED headlight, internal LED lighting, better fuel consumption (9.8L vs 8.1L / 100km) , all this yet still manage to be 7000$ CHEAPER than the Kia. So much for "shitty Chinese cars" stereotype you keep pushing on in this channel.
      The reliability and safety argument is invalid since both brand received 5 star rating from ANCAP.
      your Cherry car is shitty because it is a shitty car, not because it is Chinese.

    • @roblee3404
      @roblee3404 Před 5 lety +2

      As a chinese here: yeh, the Havals sold in NZ today could be of reasonably good quality while serpentza's old car is shitty, as he admitted himself, because it is old. None of you is wrong.
      So can we say that, quality-wise, majority of Chinese cars are still at the low-end up to now, just hope that their improvements continue.

    • @System0Error0Message
      @System0Error0Message Před 5 lety

      Many car brands are owned by chinese car brands, like volvo, so they just put their sticker on it especially in countries that have many chinese around too. A lot of car brands use local parts and manufacturing, so buying a japanese car in germany is made in germany while a japanese car in asia is made in their own respective countries. For example almost every ute is made in thailand as thats where they are tested for their offroad ability and weather.

    It's great to see that even in China, you have some fans! My experience with Chinese products is that like you said, they are a lot better than what they used to be. Japanese and Korean products also used to be total crap, now look at them, especially Toyota, Sony, Panasonic, Samsung, LG and Hyundai! I used to have a Xiaomi Mi Note Pro phone, and it was a brilliant phone, worked well, and it never missed a beat. I have upgraded since, and gave the Xiaomi to my brother, and it's still being a solid phone. The same can be said about Chinese cars. We have Great Wall, Foton, Haval, JAC and I am starting to see a few on the road. One bloke I know has a Great Wall X240 "Hover" 4WD and it has been a good car, despite being quite gutless.

    Japanese cars are very common in China. Honda and Toyota have been two of the best selling car brands in China for a long time. Chinese cars are pretty common outside first-tier cities. The Great Wall Haval H6 has been the best selling car in China for several years. I can understand that you're bashing the Landwind X7 for its design, but at least get your facts right. The engine in the Landwind X7 is a legitimate Mitsubishi 2.0T engine produced by the Shenyang Aerospace Mitsubishi joint-venture, not a knockoff.
    In fact, I live in China and I've been driving the Landwind X7 for two years. It has over 40,000 kilometers on the odometer and aside from a small rattle inside dashboard, it has been fully reliable. At the time of purchase, there was simply no other car that combined its aesthetics, power, handling and equipment at its price point. If you buy a Chinese car, expect GM or FCA quality. Then you won't be disappointed.
