Sorry to say the billiard ball fact isn't true.
The misunderstanding comes from the difference between smoothness and shape. The specifications for a billiard ball require its diameter to be 2.25 inches, plus or minus 0.005 inches.
A billiard ball with pits and bumps of 0.005 inches would be less smooth than the earth, but no billiard ball has them, because that range is to define its shape and size, not its smoothness.
For example, a ball could be 0.005 inches wider than it is tall, and would fall within regulation. If the 0.005 inches were talking about pits and bumps, then a ball made of medium grit sandpaper would also comply.
If a billiard ball were actually as smooth as the earth, you would be able to feel and even see the discrepancies.
