- The first ever twin engine rally/race car to exist! This is the Twin Engine Volkswagen Scirocco GTI built in the 1980s for Rally Circuits by Kim Mathers. It has two 1.8 Supercharged VW engines, it can run RWD, FWD, or AWD like the Corsa! It was built because at the time, the Audi Quattro was just released with the AWD system, but obviously was very expensive, so Kim thought outside the box and built this machine to get a cheap way of getting AWD and saying it worked well would be an understatement!

Phwooooooar 9:23 look at that ant eater.
Absolutely brilliant car. What Kim fails to mention is he could actually drive! One off only a few to ever pass me. I notice Yvonne's water cooled brake reservoir has gone. Happy days. Thanks for posting this.
Kim's always been a legend to me & a good friend over the years servicing all my cars impeccably! I'm so glad that I got the privilege to lay the original livery on the Scirocco all them years back when I started working for a small sign company after leaving school. It still looks as good today as when I first encountered it. Hats off to you Kim.
this is 100% cooler then anyone with a ferrari or lambo
Scirocco looks to be the first to have self closing boot back in 1984 🥳
Don't you just love listening to someone with so much experience and knowledge.
Brilliant 👍
Wicked! I have had my scirocco for 23 years now... and I didn't know about this one. Thanks for the video.
Remember it well in the 80's, Kym and Yvonne, THE team to beat on the ANWCC rallies and beyond. Great engineering and great driving/navigating. ♥
I remember this car well, Adam! Great to see it looking so good again after all these years, and great to see Kim looking so well, too. The last time I saw the Scirocco was in the mid to late '80s on a rally at (I think) Melbourne or Manby airfield in East Yorkshire. Kim and Yvonne were competing against some very quick cars (Opel Manta 400, Grp 4 Escorts etc, etc) but the twin engined VW was uncatchable. Take care and speak soon 🙂
I could listen to the old boy all day
Some interesting stories he has to tell 😎😎
I had the pleasure of watching Kim racing in single seaters back in the 70’s and 80’s as well as seeing him rally this at Oulton Park. Met him again last year at Oulton. Great guy, great driver 👏👏
Nothing better than seeing your passion and respect for a obviously very intelligent bloke. Best video yet!
the passion in this man's voice ... early twin engined legend ... thank you
What an absolute legend! I always toyed around with the idea of replicating the VW BiMotor Scirocco Concept and he did it 30 years ago already. Absolutly brilliant madman!
That cars engine sounds awesome. Great to see how he sorted bump steer in the rear. glad he keeped it a restored it, like it was in the 80's. Legion 👍💯
Christ I bet he felt that at 14:47 took it like a champ mind
Awesome to see another twin engined story being told. Loving these videos Adam.
Love this!
Currently watching the F1 and wishing Group B was still alive!
What a treat isn't it to meet a man like that . He's a wealth of knowledge just as all those older fellas are . When it comes to modern racing people just throw money at the problem. The older guys weren't working with huge budgets so they figured things out on the cheap .
It's real enthusiasts like this that made rallying as entertaining and popular as it is today. He's the real deal and I could listen to him talk all day long p.s. the car is absolutely beautiful and they banned it because it was better than theirs; is that how "racing improves the breed"?
Sadly money has and always will TALK
A lot like modern F1 🙄
Loved that car! Used to have a 2nd gen Scirocco street and a race car! It was a FWD racecar only, but with sponsorship from Pepsi we won our class in time trials, sprint and endurance races. This brought back many memories but this twin engine is just bonkers! Ours had 121 hp at the wheel. Can't imagine how nuts these cars will be with two engines and 400 hp! Thank you for the post 🖤💛❤
What a lovely fella, Have heard about this over the years and seen static photo's but never an in depth review. Absolutely fantastic
Had the pleasure of meeting this guy at Goodwood this year one of the most interesting guys ever spoken too
Just awesome. I had heard about the factory twins, and I know a guy in the US who threw a crude one together and got it to work; I think with an auto in the front, too. This done back in the day and killing the competition is really great. Great work, Kim.
Great rally cars, it deserves to be more famous and more recognition
Loved this car, saw it on events all the time in the eighties. Kim came to Kirby Lonsdale MC and gave a talk about it, drove it too Melling Hall. I can remember studying it in the carpark. In a conversation that night he said his wife sometimes went shopping in it. Great car and driver.
Seems a great guy.. :) Good video mate.!!
what a good video , i wondered what happend to this car i remember it winning at blackpool airfield back in the day i allways wondered about the inns and outs of this car and you answered everything ,thanks
Fantastic car. I’ve seen it rallying at Donnington park stage rally 3rd July 1988 amazing! I have photos
Thoroughly liked the video. Thanks!
I had the same idea a couple months ago...turns out, not only has it been done but it has been done brilliantly :D
Absolutely fascinating video. 👏
Thanks for a great presentation of a unique car and owner, love the gesture with the door, Cheers 👍👀🇨🇭😍
Love Scirocco,s owned 3 ,2 Gtis and I owned 3 mk1 Golf Gtis always loved VW s twin engine Scirocco do you remember the advert they had in a lot of magazines in the late 80s. Loving the content mate especially the quattro build.
I remember this car as a kid , I lived at the bottom of this street
Wow that’s brilliant. So do you remember the F1 cars in his workshop.
Great video, i had a vague memories of this car from somewhere so great to hear from the man himself and the stories. Love these kinds of outside of the box thinking projects.
Thanks for making the video.
Would love to see what happened to the dubsport twin engine cars also.
I have tracked all of them down.
BIG DUB and UFO are in a private collection museum being looked after but not used. The third red one is still alive an hopefully being filmed soon.
@@TwinEngineCorsa I remember the blue Rallye Golf and blue Mk3 Golf with twin VR6s, and the green Mk1 with twin 16Vs on carbs, and the orange Mk1 with a VR6 turbo in the rear. All mad cars.
I remember looking over a metro 6R4 group B car with 2 engines at a car dealership back in the day, it was fast, very fast according to the description card in the window, I was surprised to learn that in 1965 Austin built the twini, 2 engines shoehorned into a standard mini chassis, one in the boot and one in the usual place, the TWINI. . wish group B would be brought back and with it the crowds, that would encourage manufacturers to pump in more cash again...
Brilliant stuff. Best analogy I heard to describe a twin engined car was a guy who's T/E Mk1 golf was featured in Perfromance VW magazine some years ago. He had differing power plants and described like having a bloke pulling at the front and a bigger bloke pushing from the rear, it all made the car go and two of them meant it went faster!
Great video and Kim is a great local legend.
This car is along the lines of what me and my fellow motorhead buddies would fantasize about over beers back in the day. But this guy actually DID it! Honour is due.
41" Stateside. I love hearing stories about rally and the folks who built their own competitive cars without a big budget. Great guy and fascinating build. Also love the graphics on the car
What a legend 🙌 amazing story!
What a great old school footage of a basic man in his garage making history with a cracking 2 engined car !
Wow, there's a blast from the past. I watched this car at Aintree many times. Never saw Kim though...what a character.
Love the old-style Scirocco. I had one back in the early 80's. a TS version, so a bit lame power-wise but great down twisty roads.
Wicked video. What a build that is.
I remember seeing a couple of magazine articles on this car many years ago. There were a couple of factory built twin engined MK2 Golfs built for the Pikes Peak Hillclimb from memory too
Génial, magnifique système !
Très beau véhicule !
👍👌😉👋
Amazing car and overview, wow he's knowledge too.
Many thanks for doing this video - it would be great to do a video of a drive on the road. This reminds me of a 0-60 event at Silverstone. This old Vauxhall Nova pulled up to the line at which point I switched my camera off. That car did 0-60 in 2.8s! It turns out it had two turbo-charged 2.5L engines in it and the owner said it wasn't running 100%.
I was lucky enough to spend my apprenticeship at the VW main dealer down the road from Kim's House. I along with my mentor Ian Birch (Birchy) spent many days at Kim's. This is what inspired Ian to build BIG BUB. Hopefully Ian will build another soon 🙏
I remember it well I was in the same championship in 86 in a Lotus sunbeam it just blew us all away 👍
This car is really special
Master piece of engineering 👏
Top vid mate
Hearing an old Englishman talk about car specifics is just absolute gold!
Really cool car fantastic engineering.
Food old boy for giving you that door thanks for the video.
Top video👍. Bleady lovely car 👌
I remember one of these, or a Golf, at the Pikes Peak hill climb in 1985. Crazy sounding beast.
Lovely car , clever bloke too 👍
Great interview, been wondering about this car sense my dad and i read about it back in the day. We always wondered how a turbo diesel setup would run as the fuel tanks would be easier to mount and maybe be smaller.
Why do you sat that?
Very interesting car, great video 👍 ❤❤❤
Great classic nore videos like this
That's awesome he gave you the door.
I know this car very well. I used to work at Barras garages running a 2.6 Vauxhall hrs. Kims car was the fastest car off the line I’ve ever seen.
Great vid thank you
I could watch this guy all day
Ive been in that garage many times. Would love to see the Lotus Sunbeam, he used to turn up to rallies in the car with his slicks in the boot, Yvonne always made a cup of tea whilst sitting at the kitchen table next to a gearbox........
Remember this car at Flookburgh stages in the late 80s…. Awesome car and the guy could drive it
It reminds me of the question "What's the difference between 2WD and 4WD?". The answer was "With 4WD you don't slow down at roundabouts!".
brings back a lot of memory's seeing it at manby and oulton park ;0
21:29 I am building a mid engine K series turbo 1970 Honda z600 (Japanese mini Cooper) and I did the same thing with my rear steering knuckle, I made a linkage (to hold the rear knuckle straight) that bolts into the control arm to prevent bump steering.
I remember this car concept from the early eighties, didn’t know it existed. Had a mk2 on a G plate.
It’s great that this survived when there was a time it was obsolete, credit to the man! It’s got a very Dibnah vibe. lovely stuff!
I was Borne in 1987 lol. Nice rally car 😮
Man I'm trying to throw a case of beer in that Volkswagen and go rip around. Tell you what man.
I remember seeing the car at the Astra stages on August bank holiday 19 80 something, remember it being quick
when your car gets banned... LEGEND!
Great video and wonderful to hear this guy talk about his experiences from back in the day.
wow twin 8v's I was expecting twin 16vs. My first vw cars were 8v's easy to work on and relatively reliable, unlike the new vw crap.
Remember this from some off the meetings we yoused to race at
15:10 I was wearing headphones and looked if my wife was snoring, but she wasn’t, when I put the headphones on again I discovered that the cameraman was snoring.
Wow, any one have a 2002 rally BMW out there! This is so cool, this is a rare survivor.
Remember seeing it run on new Brighton prom
Was this car on the Wirral in the 90's at a garage in Barnston?
Beautiful car
14:47 there's a boot upside your head, there's a boot upside your head.
What suspension setup is this car running?
Separate trans and clutch for each engine?
❤ question, I had mk1 she had auto but she was not A 1600 she was 1800 is Kim’s car a mk2 . What are the engines 16 or 1800 there is a big difference on power even pre turned .
Saw it at Aintree back in the day!
If that was in Australia it would of been full of gnarly spiders
There's a guy in alberta who put together a rear W8 and a front Vr6 in a mk4 jetta. 14 cylinders jetta. : )
2 engines in a car is the correct amount of engines in a car 👍🏻🍻
I'm curious what materials are used for the firewall/bulkhead between the rear engine and the passenger compartment? Been thinking about making a RWD, east west engined car (might even go twin engine), but would like to see out the rear window.
If you have the ask. This isn’t a project for you son.
@@garyhost354 why? I've seen many different versions with many different solutions. I also live in a country where getting a twin engined car road legal would be next to impossible, so it's not done much. I can understand that answer to a question how to fix it in, but for the material...?
What a machine! Does anyone remember the green twin engine escort pickup that was in Max Power all them years ago, wonder what happened to that thing?
Don’t make people like this no more
Legend
blower on CIS! Very cool!
Any links to those skodas mentioned here?
