I use plastic poster board - about $2 for a 22" x 28" sheet at Michaels. I cut it down into 12" widths and then cut it on "Stencil Film - 0.4 mm" (pressure 341). It's nice and sturdy. I don't use spray adhesive: either I hold the stencil down by hand or I use a low-tack tape like painter's tape. For a stencil you'll want to tile (say you're looking to create an overall effect on a wall), remember to add a couple of tiny circles in the corners to use as registration marks so everything lines up correctly.
Thank you for this, I have a Cricut Expore Air2, and the transparency setting didn't work even with 2 passes - I'm going to give this a try!
all very helpful information. thank you.
😁
Can the Explore pressure go as high as 341?
Can I use this so make stencil for hot fix rhinestone
I read somewhere that I could use my laminator to make craft plastic! Just tried it and it worked PERFECT and didn’t need to do more than one pass with my normal blade! I just passed a clear laminate sheet through the laminator to seal it and cut it as normal on the card stock setting. Such a great trick!!!!!
This is a great tip. thanks
Laura Valvo I love that idea, I have a laminate, this is for that!
Thank you for the tip! I may try that with my Cricut Explore.
I placed a piece of deli paper between my laminate sandwich, put my settings on myler with more instead of default. Works beautifully.
Ok I have a laminators machine at my work place so I just pass one sheet through and use that as the stencil.
Your instructions were perfect! I'm making my first reusable stencil! Thank you!
Awesome, love stencils they are so easy to use for a faster working projects 💕‼️ I’ll would watch it few more times so I don’t make anything wrong, whenever I get my Cricut ❤️‼️
Thank you SO MUCH for this video! I loved watching it, you keep it light fun and SIMPLE. I made a couple of stencils today and they came out great. THANKS!
Thank you so much for this great video! Your stencil video is first I’ve seen on stencils! Most others have been stick on letters. I want to make word stencils to paint on various items. I cannot thank you enough for your Clear and Precise instructional video!❤️
Glad it was helpful! You are so sweet! Thank you for watching and commenting!
You dont have to do multiple passes. Just change the settings in your program to material- mylar, pressure, deep. Will cut 7.5mm first go no problem
New to Cricut. Lots to learn. Excellent video for a beginner.
All the steps & terms used (like ‘weld’) around designing the stencils were a bit overwhelming. I’m sure with practice, those steps & terms become second nature.
Looking forward to watching more of your videos.
How awesome !!!! I was getting super frustrated trying to figure it out on my own. This was super insightful and now I’m ready to tackle this project I have. I’m a beginner at this Cricut thing. This was GREAT !! Thank you !!
Glad it helped!
Excellent tutorial. I have used Graffix craft plastic. Love it. Wonderful tips on how to stencil too. Thank you. Wishing you and the entire MGL a super week. Hugs Susan
Thank you for watching! :D
Rachel, I pulled out some craft plastic this morning, it was way too heavy - wouldn’t cut through even with my deep cut blade. So I feel you. So I used a piece of plastic from my overhead projector box, it cut well. But I will need to get the acetate that you have listed below.
Love your video.🥰💕❤️🌹
Awesome Video, Im new using a cricut and wanted to make signs, this was to be my first project. with you telling us what blade, plastic and tac glue.....you explained it all!!. how could I go wrong.. it turned out great... thanks again
I can't tell you how useful this is!
I’m so glad I found this video! I couldn’t for the life of me figure out how to get those loose pieces attached.
We were searching all over to see if these machines could cut stencils before purchasing one but could not find any info anywhere - until we came across your video. We don't want to cut vinyl letters, no scrapbooking, postcards etc., we just wanted something that could create good quality stencils. The thickness still doesn't seem thick enough but the video was still very helpful. Thanks a bunch!
This really helped me create a project! I had been struggling for two days before watching your video
Thanks you Rachel for another great video. I never knew you could do anything like this. Have a wonderful weekend.
Thank you for watching! :D
This was the easiest tutorial for making a stencil. Thanks so much.😻🇨🇦❄️
You are so welcome! Thank you for your kind words!
You're a great instructor, thank you.
FANTASTIC video. My first attempt and it worked exactly the way you instructed!
Yay!!!

Thanks for sharing that. I’ve made a few stencils over the years with dies. I use 0.4mm Mylar. It’s the same thing that proprietary stencils are made of. It’s easy to use and very durable. 🌼 I don’t use adhesive either, I use the Wendy Vecchi Stay-tion. The magnets hold the stencil and paper down fast.
Do you use a deep cut blade with the Mylar? Is the 0.4 Mylar easy to obtain at like Michaels or Hobby Lobby? Do you use a special pressure setting other than just the default or more setting? My son is asking me to make him reusable stencils and want to do it right. I have a Cricut Maker.
Very informative video. I purchased the supplies using your links. Thank you.
I love this channel I subscribe immediately when I got my Cricut I like her by she doesn't come off as most Cricut Crafters and make you feel lesser than LOL with your materials she definitely tells you how to work with what you have love her love this video
I agree. She is so easy to understand what she means.
Good video. I’m a newbie to Cricut. Tfs. 👏🏻👏🏻
Awww miss Rachel, I needed this today
I FINALLY FIGURED IT OUT! YAY FOR ME! Thanks so much y'all at least when I finally figured out what to order I got it. thanks so much for that part at least!

Good video...very informative...Thank you!...
You are amazing! I love your videos thanks for sharing ❤️
Thank you so much! You're so sweet!
This is the best video for a cricut project I've seen. Super easy to follow but I'm so confused on where to put the joints in the stencil
This is great!
Thanks for sharing
Thank you for watching! :D
Thank you for this video, I've been nervous to try it however after watching you I believe I can do it
You can do it!
Really needed this video!! Thank u!!

Thanks for the great stencil tricks. Especially the little stick trick for the little pieces.
You are so welcome!
You’re a great teacher👍you make it seem so darn easy Thank you keep it up.😊
You're the sweetest!😊
Thank you for a well explained video, have been trying to make stencils for a while and have wasted a lot of vinyl in the process. 🙂🙏🏻
You are SO welcome!😊
Thank you so much. Hobby lobby has stencil sheets. I use the glitter mesh setting to cut nice and hard. Great video. I was trying to figure out the computer part. Thank you thank you
You are so welcome!
Thank you, making one was on my list. Can’t wait to make. The tip for the floating pieces was awesome!
Thank you for watching! :D
Great video, as usual. Possible suggestion When you add the tiny rectangles, follow the top of the line where it comes back across, this will make it look like it belongs. Thank you again for a great quick video.
Thank you! :)
Great video!
Super helpful! Thank you!
You're welcome!
This is an excellent tutorial. Very helpful. Thank you
Thank you for watching! :D
Thank you so much! I have been doing this way more complicated, lol
Glad I could help!
Thank you so much for this tutorial! Tried to make one recently, without this tutelage and the struggle was real! 😂
You’re welcome 😊
Thank you for this video we have wasted so much vinyl with stencils omg cant tell you how much. I get so aggravated when you do all the steps and then the vinyl doesn't stick to the wood lol. I appreciate your explaining everything as well. Thanks for all that you do and keep up the good work.
You are so welcome!
Hi Scott! I don't know if you put a topcoat on your wood first but it definitely helps your vinyl to adhere to your wood! This is what you have to do with furniture transfers I've used also. A nice water base I use is Minwax Polycrylic or Varathan triple thick Polyurethane water base that is a great water repellent on surfaces that would get a lot of use. My daughter used it on her custom wooden bathroom sink counter and her boys leave water on the counter top lol truly tried and no damage 😉 hope this helps you!
Great vid!
Yay! Thank you Cathline 😊
Thanks. I am just starting to learn how to make stencils
You'll love them!
This was perfect for me! Im learning hiw to use an airbrush. Thanks!
Great to hear! Good luck!😀
The Cricut Foil Acetate Sheets worked great using ur exact instructions! There are a couple of sampler packs that are on sale for 6.50 for a 12 pack.....half the price of the Grafix sheets! I don’t mind the transparent pattern that’s on them for the price. Thank you so much for such a detailed tutorial! 💕
Thank you for sharing :)
Clemmons777 where sis you find these at?
Thank you so much I'm new at cricut 😊😊😊😊
Thank you so much for watching!
love it!!!
Thank you!
Since I got my A2 for Christmas I’ve been hooked. Ive been wanting to try my hand at wood and fabrics. So My Amazingly Awesome husband upgraded my machine for my BD. I’m now a proud owner of a Maker. This is now something I want to try. With my tax refund I’m investing on an annual MGL subscription.
Thank you for watching! :D
#MakersGonnaLearn I just made my first stencil!!! thank you for this wonderful help - Happy new year - John 3:17

What a great video. Thank you.

Love your accent, and this video, thanks

I used plastic posterboard I bought at Michaels. Came out great! Chose posterboard with fine blade.
Oh great!
I'm in love with your voice
Thank you for watching! :D

Great video! Thank you!
You are welcome!
I’ve had my Air explore 2 since Mother’s Day and have only unpacked it and put on my table. I just haven’t known what to do with it. Stencils is one thing I have been thinking of. Thank you for explaining it all so well! Now when my son (who gave it to me) ask if I’ve used it I will be able to show him what I’ve done😃
Can you make a stencil with the air 2 ?
@TavvAbe use custom dial and then you should be able to do this on an explore.
Thank you I hope I can do this , I’m wanting to paint my deck floor and decorate it with stencils! I know it won’t last forever but it looks kinda. Blah so for fun I’m gonna give it a try.
I guessed fairly well on some plastic to try stencils. I'm so glad to see this video as a beginner. I plan on making my oen to paint on my bath bombs- my other business. This may be my first sellable project! And I LOVED the way close ups of design space - I could see it. For some reason my buttons aren't there
Yay!! So glad this helped you! Also, Design Space recently updated so it may look a little different yes :)
@@MakersGonnaLearnHi. I'm like NEW NEW to Cricut --like, so new that I've had it for a year and it's still brand new in the box!! It seems so intimidating to me!! 😩😩😩😭😭😭 Anyway, why can't you just tape your stencil down to your project instead of having toude easy tac?
Love this video, I have a question on if there is any special instructions for using the stencil on fabric like to screen print or fabric paint
Great helpful video - TFS! ❤️🇨🇦
Glad it was helpful!
Great Video!!!!!!!!
Thanks!! We're so glad you enjoyed it!
thank you that was interesting
Glad you enjoyed it
As always, thank you for your video and where to order the supplies. How do you get the smart guide?
I love me some Rachel!👍🏼😍💕
Thank you for watching! :)

Did y’all ever put the links to the plastic and spray?
Thank you so very much! I'm getting a new kitchen put in, and want to create scenes on the outside of the cupboards. Imagine a guest asking, "where are the cups?" And I say, "in the Mountain." That said, though, buying stencils to use once, maybe twice, was quickly adding up, and tbh, it was almost the price of getting a shiny new Cricut Explore Air 2! Yeah, no. Plus with the Cricut, I'm thinking stencils with paint and then lovely custom stickers would be fantastic. Thank you for the tutorial! My brain is vibrating with ideas now.
You're welcome!
Do you have a video showing how to use stencil to make a wooden sign?
Rachel you live and learn. You can always use it for shaker cards😊
Thank you, that is true! :)
Love of the video, it is less costly than the stencil, I have different type of craft plastic along with plastic that I used with overhead on the projector..
Thanks for the video. You made it understandable to me and I really appreciate that.Just a tip, It would have been helpful to show the finished stencil on dark paper. I had a hard time seeing it.
Glad it helped!
You can make reusable stencils with the cricut? Damn, now I might actually buy one.
Thank you
Great video
Thank you so much!
Love your accent you have to tell me where you are from, I am from the west coast of Canada, I have never heard your accent. My mom’s fam is from New York and Ohio. Thanks so much.
I’ve never tried to make a stencil. You did an awesome job teaching us how to do this, thank you
Thank you for watching! :D
Thank you. I’m looking to make large furniture stencils with repetitive patterns. Can a circuit do that for me.
Can you make picture type stencils like of a bird in a tree for example. This is the first video I’ve watched so I haven’t a clue. Thank you again 😀
I made a Kentucky state stencil with the word love in it.
Thank you for watching! :D
Thanks for the great info! I'm using soooo much vinyl and I just started. How do I get that Sierra font? It's not showing up for me. I love it and I want it!
Jeeez!! Just get on with it...
GREAT tutorial! Just a couple of questions. Can you confirm that the reposition spray needs to be added to the stencil with each application? If not, and remains sticky after one use, what do you suggest using to cover the back -- acetate sheets? Lastly, any recommended distance for spraying the reposition adhesive?
Hello!! Only add more spray if it seems like it's not as sticky. Also, laying a piece of clear wrap/cling film is a good way. 8" away is preferred! Thank you for your great questions!
Loved this video. The video has helped me to decide if I want to buy Circut. But what Cricut model is the facilitator using?
This is the Cricut Maker: amzn.to/2S1iFNB
This is awesome! I appreciate your advice so much. I am assuming everything still applies to the Maker 3?
It should!🙂
Cool thx 🎉
You're welcome 😊
I currently dont have a Cricut. However, I'm researching to see if i can make a reusable plastic sheet for stencils. These stencils will be used for fishing lures. The stencils will be slightly bent to courtier around the body of the fishing baits.
THANK YOU
You're welcome!
Nice video for making stencils. Have you or anyone on this thread ever made a stencil for placing on sugar cookies for decoration purposes? What size plastic for the stencil, etc.?
The accent is awesome ❤
Thank you!
