When a piece of clothing doesn't feel right, it really doesn't matter how good others think it looks. The color of the sweater surprised me most because on my screen, it is a rich, caramel color.

minkie , I agree regarding feeling good on something. There were occasions where people tell me that something really look great on me but I just didn’t feel right and therefore when one doesn’t feel right one loses one’s overall confidence.

I always feel so guilty when I buy a piece of clothing or shoes, and then don't wear them. Even if it's inexpensive, I feel badly. It's good to know that everyone seems to make purchases that sometimes don't work.

Yes! People always talk about things they spent too much money on and don't wear as a mistake, but I feel just as bad about the inexpensive items. I have purchases so much stuff from the clearance rack because it was such a good deal. But how foolish if I only wear them once or twice. Live and learn.

I refer to this as "the lure of beautiful items." All too often I have been sucked in by a gorgeous fabric or jewelry design, only to find later that (as Audrey says) the item doesn't play well with anything else in my wardrobe. Still trying to find that balance between statement/boring.

Autumn Mancuso I try to wear everything at least once before donating it. What I have trouble with is loving that Cape Cod type blue striped sweater dress that is just too warm to wear in the summer...have two or three. Medium knit in a summer theme only works if you go boating. They are now in the donation bag.

    Great video!
There are many regret purchases in my past. The key is to purge these items and move on, without being hard on ourselves. I consider these purchases a "sunk cost" which helps me get over it quickly. And Goodwill benefits from these cast-offs.
I will often look at sale prices on designer goods and then take a step back and ask myself if I'd still like it if it were made by an unknown designer. It keeps me honest/humble. Just because the price is amazing doesn't mean that we should go for it! And that doesn't only go for designer goods, but for fantastic fabrics (silk, etc.) that are the wrong color or shape.

I case you are looking for video suggestions - I would love to hear more about olive skin tone and how to work with it!
I didn't find enough meaningful information on the web, and I really love how you explain concepts, so I think me and other people with olive skin would greatly benefit from you sharing your knowledge.
You already saved me a lot of money and effort by telling that one can have pale, but yellowish skin with cool/neutral undertone, and I had that "Aha! That's why I don't look good in orange, warm beige, but do look good in ivory and cool green, no matter that my skin definitely has a yellow overtone".

Thank you for this very honest video! I feel frustrated when I see intentional, ethical, curated, sustainable, etc. bloggers gush so much about a new purchase, but then the item is never to be seen or heard of again in future posts! This was refreshing to see you as a blogger be totally open about mistaken purchases and how you parted with them in a thoughtful, non wasteful way. I also enjoyed your discussion of admiring something that someone else is wearing, but realizing it may not fit in with your unique personal style- and that’s ok! One thing I’ve learned on my own personal style journey is the need to see the difference between something I appreciate about what someone else is wearing versus what I would actually wear myself. I now view seeing other’s style in the same way I view art- I can enjoy many pieces of art in a museum, but I wouldn’t hang every piece in my home.

Audrey has a capsule wardrobe and practices thoughtful purchasing, so I don't know that "shopping for fun" makes sense in this case, as often those purchases aren't consistent with her lifestyle and will likely result in more regretted purchases, since fun purchases typically aren't made thoughtfully.
I don't recall if her motivation is for sustainability/ethical reasons or more personal/financial reasons, but I do know she promotes a "thoughtful purchasing" mindset, so I thought I would chime in here.
Also, I agree with you and everyone else, the sweater looked closer to dark caramel or maybe a more subtle burnt orange(?) on my screen.

What do you mean buying for fun though? I for example consider it fun and great if I buy something I need and I like and which looks good on me at the same time. Sometimes I would buy things I don't really need, but I still think a lot before my purchase, like how much I like it, how good does it look on me and where would I wear it. Otherwise it doesn't make sense at all for me to spend money on it. I'm not a millionare lol.

I loved hearing what your personal misses were. I’m the same in that my hopes for all things I buy will last forever or get worn for years to come but I’ve also learned that we can just never know! I have pieces I swore would add value to my wardrobe and literally never get worn because I’m not being quite honest with myself or didn’t realize it wouldn’t work with my style-but again I wouldn’t have learned that lesson as well if I didn’t get that item. Being as intentional as we can definitely helps keeps waste low even if not all pieces make the cut! You are right that not all is lost. If anything our wardrobe misses teach us something and make even better decisions later! Thanks for the great video!

As of today, I am a new subscriber to your channel!! First of all, I was searching CZcams to find ideas about the Cladwell $299.00 course on capsule wardrobes. I found your channel and 100% fell in love with your voice. OMG what a beautiful voice! I watched a video on your skin care routine, another on your perfect hair and makeup routine and one on what you won't wear in 2021. Then I found your blog and e-book on how to build a classic capsule wardrobe and I am 100% hooked! I don't think I will be purchasing that course, instead I will be buying some items suggested in your e-book. Audrey Coyne you are AMAZING! Thank you for so many great tips. I know there are so many more to come. I am so grateful I found you!

I really enjoyed how you analyse the reasons why you end up not wearing these articles. I myself have many things I love in a sentimental sense but do not make me feel confident by wearing them. I think in my mind I associate certain clothes and accessories with ideas, moments or memories but that is not an efficient or healthy "relationship" with my wardrobe. I usually gravitate towards the same kinds of pieces and the majority (!) is always in storage often never-worn. I regret how terribly wasteful that is but sometimes it's hard to let things go.

It is annoying to waste money and precious resources on these items. This video is so timely because I also did some analysis of where I went wrong. I have come to the conclusion that you shouldn't have to work too hard to make something belong in your wardrobe. There are so many gorgeous pieces out there and you just know when you have hit the jackpot!! I will restrain and be patient until the right item comes along.

I'm lucky to have my mother and sister both of who wear almost the same size clothing and shoes as mine, so whenever I don't fell like wearing something anymore, the size didn't fit or I just don't feel comfortable with it, I just give it to them. And they're happy, especially my sister, haha. I buy mostly second hand, so a returning a purchase is not much of a go for me. I also have been experimenting quite a lot for the last couple of years, a friend of mine gently pushed me to go further and deeper in trying new things, as well, which has been a nice journey for me. Now I definitely know what I love, enjoy and feel comfortable with, only remains to see what else I do not find fit for me and my style.

I have made many wardrobe mistakes, because I love a designer. When I saw their label, something happened in my brain and I forgot all I’ve learned about what works for me. I now cut the labels out of my clothes, because they bother my neck, so I really have no incentive to keep the clothes after the label is removed. After spending the money, it’s hard to donate these expensive items...but it’s a good teaching tool for me. I can now walk away from a favorite label, even when it’s a great buy! Thanks for the reminder. Stay well and be blessed. 💕

I think I understand your problem with the black pants. I’m also a slim petite, and really like wide leg pants, but I’ve found that the fabric used is the key to fit. Structured fabric like twill with fly front and belt loops (example: Everlane) look good on me, while drapey unstructured elastic waist pants just look and feel like pajama pants. I’ve learned that petites need structured style clothing.

I have learned so much from CZcams videos like yours Audrey. I am 73, a retired professional who used to wear high quality blazers, silk blouses and skirts in my profession. The odd thing though is I was paying $100 and up for all my blazers and silk bouses....in the 80s from Lord and Taylor, Saks, and Neiman Marcus...sales only for NM! Now Zara and other places charge that for blazers and even coats. The difference, besides made outside the USA by low wage workers, is the quality of materials. Structural garment parts like interfacings, shoulder pads and trims like buttons were so much higher in quality in the past, as was the fabric. I love how you buy to maintain in your wardrobe for years. This is what everyone used to do. Styles changed slowly except for casual clothes for the youth market eg jeans styles. I still stay away from trends. I mever have worn low rise or mid rise jeans bec I am a figure 8 so my high hip measurement is the same as my low hip.....I would not have been able to keep those up! I learned long ago not to wear boxy jackets, short or long ones, the double breasted non fitted ones look great on the tall and super slim...not on my petite frame! We have to know what styles work best for us as individuals, colors too, so we dont get tempted by marketers. I cannot wear wide leg clam digger pants, as they were called in the 70s, like your black ones either. ITs good you have trained your eye to see that something is "off" and then analyze the why. You will save yourself many future mistakes.

The hardest thing is having regrets about purchases and then not being able to part with them because we keep on going through our mind how much money and time we have spent on those items . I have to keep on reminding myself that those unworn items may be appreciated by others. Regret sometimes keeps us from moving forward. I have donated thousands of dollars of clothing, purses and furniture. I also have many working clothes items in my wardrobe which I will be donating to shelters where for example women will be requiring nice clothing to wear to interviews or potential new jobs. If someone’s says, “but I love the color” it shoots up a red flag. I have learned like I hate looking at anything blue BUT it looks good on me. I stayed away from many beautifully made clothing because I’d say, “I hate that color”. So trying out a few colors of blue over the last 10 years, I had received more compliments while wearing them. I LOVE looking at orange so I’d been buying some for of orange to wear.
I have learned ,at 50 , I can buy orange for my home, placed where I can enjoy it the most. I have purchased and wore colors of blue that do look the best on me.
When buying any type of white shirt, I alwAys bought two. As a hairstylist, I took that even further by buying two of everything from trousers, skirts, blouses and jeans. All with the intentions of saving one just for my Civilian wardrobe and one to wear in the salon. While I have loved having a minimal wardrobe out of sheer loathing to choose outfits, I some how lost my damn marbles these last few years keeping the same habit. I am retired!!!! I’ve always donated my clothes and because I am a bigger gal, the women shelters have such a need for larger, decent clothing because they rarely get those items in. After this week, they’ll have plenty!
