I recommend you use hydraulic instead of air. It might turn faster with air, but if you get in a tight spot and your traction is on the sides of the tire, you won’t have the air pressure required to turn them. When Air pressure gets too high it becomes very dangerous. As an engineer who tests composite vessels for an aerospace company, we never use air to test case strength, we use water, liquids are incompressible so you can generate high pressure and when the case fails the damaged sections don’t become projectiles, unlike what happens if we use air. Think of like a spring, the fluid is like a short but very stiff spring and air is like a large, long spring. When the hydraulic spring at 1000 psi releases it only moves a short distance, when the air spring releases it moves a long way and carries any broken parts with it. We call that a bomb.

    Awesome channel, great videos.
OK so I would definitely choose hydraulic because it is more positive and direct than Air ( hydraulic is an incompressible fluid so it has a rock solid feel).
Also because Hydraulic does not compress like air, it is much SAFER (albeit more messy) as there is very little kinetic or rather potentential energy stored when hydraulic is under pressure, notwithstanding a whipping hose broken at the pump.
High pressure compressed Air has so much stored energy that it can be a destructive Bomb, and also a squishy steering response. There are many arguments in favour of compressed air I'm sure, but they are not as compelling as the arguments in favour of hydraulic.
Just some food for thought. 😃

Air won't work worth a darn. It's much to compressible. Under heavy resistance it would compress instead of moving the ram. If it finally moves the ram it would move all at once. Would be impossible to control. Hydraulic is not compressible and gives a more positive response on the ram.

Hello Team MORR, greetings from Mexicali, Mexico. This heavy wrecker build is amazing. I'd go with hydraulic steering as I believe it would be more predictable, especially for little steering inputs back and forth when in the trails. I remember long ago in school that liquid (in this case hydraulic oil) compresses nothing if compared to air. Just install a nice big oil cooler. I used to go off road often in my younger days here in Baja. Throughout 20 years I had 4 nice XJ's, nothing too fancy just a 3" lift and 32s, everything else stock. Now I am trapped in the 9am to 5pm grind. However I have been building my 5th XJ for some time now this time is a 1998 with long arms in the front, 32s. Next to come 4.10 gears and No-Slip Autolockers front and rear. This one is for taking my 3 kids offroad, hopefully I will manage to pass on the hobby to the next generation. Best regards.

Hydraulic! Full left or full right will be the only "solid" position due to air cushion. Sidehilling would be dicey at best, rough terrain would have them unpredictably steering/wandering side to side following ruts and contours etc. Road driving could be a terrifying fluttering feedback loop when hitting bumps.
Also, setting up a selector valve to enable/disable 4 wheel steering becomes very simple with the front being a hydraulic system already:)

I dunno if there's a reason why Matt doesn't do this but if you mount a winch as low as possible on a trailer you can run the winch rope underneath whatever you're loading to pull it further onto the trailer.
Granted, there's going to be times when, perhaps, you need the winch attached to the front so you can control a damaged front-end but, even so, you can pull the vehicle onto the trailer from the front and then unhook the winch, run the cable underneath the vehicle, attach the hook at the back and pull it another couple of feet.

have you ever thought of fabricating a universal tie rod that fits both UTVs and side-by-sides? On many of your recoveries, I've noticed that these were the only things broken otherwise the vehicle would still be drivable, If you carried these in the banana or the morvair as part of your recovery kit, it would help to recover these vehicles in trails not accessible to trailers.

Hydraulic will be faster, far more precise and require less maintenance in cold weather (not running methylene in the air lines and cleaning out moisture straps etc) but obviously if you spring a leak out on the trail, air hose is easier to fix than hydraulic. I'd say hydraulic, but I'm not the one fixing it or buying the oil :)
Also, Lizzy, you're one heck of a fabricator, as are you Tom Tom. You're all upping your game with this wrecker build. Welding is something that I really do want to get into, at some point in the near future. I've always been an electronics and soldering guy. I also design and 3D print things. Greetings, It has been interesting watching this off road wrecker come together. You have done a great job of building it from the ground up. Also like the previous comments, Lizzie is doing a great job welding. However, I have noticed that all vertical welds are being welded downhill which does not get as good of penetration as you get from welding uphill. I have welded structural steel and just about everything under the sun and we never weld vertical welds downhill. I don't know about the requirements of your state for vehicle inspection to certify a wrecker for use on the highway. But I do know that if the welds are inspected on the frame and they see that they go downhill you may not pass inspection, if they even look at that. If there is an accident and the welds are determined to be the cause of the accident then you could end up facing considerable financial trouble. When I worked as a Carman I and II for the railroad I had to stamp my work with my initials and if my welds failed later I would be held responsible for any damage to life and property.

He's a little rough, but he gets the job done, which is more important than it been perfect. Example that steering ram needs to be posistioned specifically so the axis of the turn radius of the inside and outside wheels intersect at one point with the axis of the rear wheels. it is impossible that this is right as the ram was positioned by mounting the bracket 6.5 in from the chassis and at whatever distance forward. This will chomp out the tyres much quicker and cause poorer road holding BUT, it's close to running and earning money, which is the actual goal, not being a perfectly engineered vehicle.

I use and recommend the NOCO because it is waterproof, it stays with the vehicle and stays connected to the battery all the time, you just have to plug in an extension cord.

Getting closer and closer. Can't wait to see it in action.
As for the pneumatic or hydraulic steering, I vote hydraulic. I believe a small hydraulic leak will be more easily spotted in its early stages than an air leak. And you've already shown in your test that it's going to take a whole lot of air pressure to move those and do you really want to have to maintain an air tank at that kind of pressure.
And while I've got your attention, please pay attention to your CAUTION! sign. You guys are doing an awful lot of drilling, grinding, and cutting without eye protection and as much as I hate to say it, it's not a matter of if but just a matter of when someone's going to have a potentially devastating eye injury due to this. I think the sign is a great idea but only if you're following it.

Put a 7-way plug on the trailer, so you can just recharge the battery for the winch while you're using it with the AUX power. Just make sure it's just on if the engine is running, not if the ignition is on stage 2 (so it won't charge while you're trying to start the car). And also make sure to put an amp limiter on it, so it won't try to drain the battery half empty in an instant, if the battery on the trailer is low.

  • @funnyfarm5555
    @funnyfarm5555 Před rokem

Steering should be hydraulic. Pneumatic is great for industrial applications where you want something in or out. Air will compress and hydraulics won't. An air based system would cause you issues on some of the trails you crawl around on.
One other thing; stress cracks/split on sheet metal. On your hood where you cut out for the shocks, I would round the corners and not have them square. My experience tells me that as the hood flexes it will crack/split in the inside corners. You could also spot weld L shaped braces/reinforcement underneath back a little from the edge to somewhat conceal the braces/reinforcement, but with no sharp inside corners.
Who is going to paint the frame and stuff when done? What will be painted and what won't?
