- Built from 1806 to 1820 by Haitian ruler Henry Christophe, the Citadelle is perched 3,000 feet above sea level, and is a monumental symbol of freedom and defense. With an architectural symbolism resembling the hull of a ship, it is the largest castle in North America. Initially built in response to fears of French attack, construction of the Citadelle was halted when the threat diminished, resulting in the tragic sacrifice of its architects. Today, it remains a testament to Haiti's enduring spirit and quest for freedom.

My students (in West Palm Beach, FL) and I enjoyed learning about the Citadelle and saw that this video was posted just two months ago. We know that Haiti is in crisis and a student was wondering when the video was recorded. Thank you for posting this important information! We look forward to learning more.
Thanks! While there continues to be lots of termoil in parts of Haiti there are also MILLIONS of people still going about their normal life. The Citadelle is located near Cap Haitien which has reamined peaceful through the past few months.
The entire Haiti is not in crisis it’s only in port au prince and even the entire port au prince is not bad. But the media only want to show chaos when it comes to Haiti
Thank you for teaching your students about the citadelle
Hi New Roots Haiti, amazing informational video. I was thinking about using the Citadelle Laferrière as an intro for a video. I am considering a clip from your video. Around 3:45. I was wondering if I could have your permission and use it? Thanks
