If you would like an example of how big an impact on music he truly had, there is a concert video he did just a few days before his death called Black and White Night. The sheer amount of rock royalty that was there that night in support of him is astounding. Amazing performer and King of Cool.
The amount of Rock Royalty in his backup band/singers is amazing
B&W Night was frickin amazing.
Literally music royalty up there as his backup singers and session musicians 😅
Also worth checking out his late collaboration with other music royalty in The Travelling Wilbury's.
YES - fantastic concert.. thanks!
Fantastic concert, but it was recorded over a year before his death.
My absolute favorite show ever!!!!
Black and White
Roy Orbison had one of the most smooth powerful voices. He could sing real high falsetto & also low. Elvis Presley loved Roy's voice. Roy had lots of hits in the 60's such as "Only the Lonely", "Running Scared", "Pretty Woman", "In Dreams", "Love Hurts", "Blue Bayou" etc. In 1988, he co-founded the Traveling Wilburys (a rock supergroup) with George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, & Jeff Lynne. They had a lot of great songs such as "Handle With Care" & "End Of The Line".
He stands so still because he was blind
@@tramsey9059 False: Many people assumed Roy was going blind, but he was anything but. His trademark dark glasses he began wearing in 1963, just before a British tour with The Beatles. It happened by accident: when he misplaced his regular glasses, he wore the dark ones, which became his trademark.
I also like "Drive All Night"
@@tramsey9059 He was not blind!
@@sundayze It's called "I Drove All Night" from the album "King Of Hearts" one of his 2 posthumously released albums.
I can't believe that anyone hasn't heard of Roy Orbison . That dude was an icon of rock.
Roy Orbison always said he couldn't take credit for his voice - it was a gift from God.
Indeed it was. Only a texas Roughneck would give him his due!
The god delusion.
To answer your question: Roy is definitely singing live in this performance, no over-dubs, other BS. Amazing.
Crying sung by Roy Orbison and K.D Lang is beautiful…. A duet …. years later spectacular
Oh..The Best!
He had such hauntingly beautiful voice. He was such a unique performer. Sure miss him.
Same, then his friend George Harrison died of cancer a decade later, gods of music gone too soon 😢
The K D Lang version of this at the Roy Orbison Tribute concert is just amazing.
Yes!!!
Fun Fact: Roy didn't need those glasses. When he first started, he was super shy/nervous. He wore the glasses to basically hide behind them and they became signature.
Yes he did need the glasses, he had worn very thick glasses for years and was very self-conscious about his glasses. He started wearing prescription sunglasses to hide the sickness of the prescription that he needed. You can find pictures of him when he first started out and see how thick his glasses were.
Welcome to the world of Roy Orbinson. He was one of the four of Sun Records - he, Johnny Cash, Elvis and Carl Perkins. No re-mastering done. Roy had a vocal range that few could come close to. Take an evening and watch "Black and White Night" as it has many of his hits and look at his band members who are great artists in their own rights. Compare this version to his and kd lang's duet as well as kd's solo video of Crying. He had a huge impact in the UK. Many have said he was a musician's musician. Mr Orbison's last album, King of Hearts, was released after his death by Jeff Lynne who worked with Roy in The Traveling Wilburys which also included Tom Petty, George Harrison, Bob Dylan.
Bruce Springstien did the black and white special. Little bit younger B. S. Was. It is a Special time❤
Yea Bruce was there I watched the whole thing and the cig. Smoke would of chocked you.. IT WA A GREAT❤
Great comment, though the "no remastering done" comment has confused me 🤔
@@SeahorsesJay SalvoG comments that the sound is so crisp and strong that it had to be remastered. But if when listening you can hear the "hiss" which is removed when re-mastered. This performance was on single use film not video which can be recorded over.
Elvis was once asked who he considered the best singer of all time. He answered,"Roy Orbison".
This song done by k d Lang is definitely worth a listen. Her emotion while singing it makes you feel it.
I am 78 years old and this man still gives me goosebumps when I listen to him sing I saw Roy on at least 4 separate occasions on his many trips to Australia going back to when l was a teenager and have several vynl albums of his including the 6 ties Golden Decade every song he recorded from the 6 ties to 69 my favorite Orbison song is Evergreen. R. I. P. Roy
Every one in that audience is now in their late 70's. damn, i feel old. Great Video
Join the club. That could be me and my classmates sitting there. Sure doesn't seem like 60 years ago.
I thought they were already dead. Glad they woke up at the end!
Still in my 60s here. Absolutely ❤ Roy Orbison!!
Roy Orbison had such a unique sound and his voice could just fill a concert hall. You can instantly tell Roy's voice once you get familiar with it. I think you may have heard him just didn't know it as he was famous for singing Pretty Woman.
I saw hi. In 1965 and he was masterful!! This is how he sounded!
I had the honor of a lifetime to see Roy Orbison in concert in 1986 he was outstanding, simply wonderful! And yes he really is this good!
I loved this song as a boy in 85 at 18 and let's say it was not the coolest thing to do. this song was over 20 years old then. I never cared about what people thought who and what type I listened too. he was considered to have one if not the greatest voice ever. he had a 4 octave. my father loved him and so did I. R.I.P. Roy and yes, I am still crying. 😎
The look on your face was priceless. Roy was unique. If you want to be blown away check out his song Walk On. Or his unbelievably beautiful version of Danny Boy.
He did that full voice. Live. Astounding.
If you haven't already, you must do k.d. lang singing this song with Roy Orbison. As well, k.d. lang singing Hallelujah at the Vancouver Olympics opening. This is not the original being lip-synced.
Bono had done some recording with Roy and he said he could not understand how such a huge voice came out of a man who's voice barely moved. Elvis Presley called him the greatest voice ever. That pretty much sums it up.
If you’ve ever watched the movie Pretty Woman, you have heard this voice before, singing the song of the same name. Btw, if you haven’t seen that movie, you definitely should.
As always, I love your reactions.
His voice is just pure it's just plain him singing amazing, right
No one sang about heartache like Lonesome Roy. This is absolutely the original sound recording.
Roy was an immense talent, one of a kind. No one sang about heartache like Lonesome Roy. He wasn't blind. He started wearing sunglasses because of the bright lights onstage and it became his trademark look. True story: When Elvis was just starting out, you could book him to play a concert for $100 a night. A concert promoter in Texas - I wish I knew his name - booked Elvis to play five shows in five different Texas cities in one week. At two different shows that week, two young Texas boys saw Elvis and decided to start making music themselves. Their names were Roy Orbison and Buddy Holly. We owe that promoter so much.
Yodeling is just switching rapidly between chest voice and head voice or falsetto. He makes a couple of yodeling flips in this song. It sounds awesome. Do check out some of his other songs. He definitely has a unique and beautiful voice.
If you really want to be blown away by this guy, get the full Black and White Night DVD. All the beautiful songs, backed by literally an All-Star band. He is an American icon!
I have read that Roy Orbison was Elvis Presley favorite singer. His reason was Roy’s passion and emotion in all of his songs.
"Oh, Pretty Woman" is a great upbeat song by Roy.
He tragically lost his first wife to a motorcycle accident, followed a few years later by the loss of 2 of his 3 sons in a house fire while he was away on tour. IMO the grief this man carried with him added an emotional depth to his voice that is truly moving.
Roy Orbison was such a subtle discreet radio presence during my early teens. I'd forgotten how incredible he was
So many hits!
the people watching are in silence. That's respect.
Roy Orbison, absolute legend
Without revealing my age, lol, I have to say Roy Orbison was one of my favs when I was in high school. That song is so haunting and with his voice it can always bring tears. Thanks so much for your reaction to this classic song.
Roy was the very first singer that I fell in love with. That voice is so iconic. You really don't know what you've been missing. He was the only singer my older brother ever cared for and still does to this day. I have introduced his music to many younger generations and they all still love his catalog of songs 🎶. You can pick anyone of his songs and they are gold. You might try his collaboration with Canadian K.D. Lang on this same song. It is beautiful and when she finishes it people have said "Elvis has left the building and shes beautiful." 😆 As Dagmar stated he later towards the end of his life joined an iconic band of legendary musicians called The Traveling Wilburys and they put out some great music that was cut short by Roy's passing. A sad day it was indeed. But his beautiful music lives on. Pretty Woman I think is the most recognized. Thanks for your great reactions. 🥰💜🎶💜
One of the best voices in music!! Mr Cool! Loved his comeback with The Traveling Wilbury’s RIP Roy ❤
the great, GREAT Roy Orbison.... no other voice has that vulnerability.
Him and Bono were singing in the studio and they kept stopping. The producer says whats up and Bono says Roy isn’t singing. They played the tape back and Roy’s voice was perfect. He just sings really quiet.
Roy wrote and sang the real tearjerkers - and he was a master at it. One of the true greats.
I saw him in concert in Miami just about a year before he died. Just stood there and sang. Best concert I've ever been to... and I've been to a lot. The audience went crazy.
So special. in 1965 I was 15 YO and trying so hard to be a man but still so vulnerable that I cried at busted love. This is my anthem.
He was a big influence on Barry Gibb of the Bee Gees while he was growing up and developing his music. And Barry got to sing with him doing a song called Indian Summer with the Gatlin Brothers. And then Barry held back a bit because he was sharing a mic with Roy and didn't want to drown out his voice so no one could hear him because he was getting elderly.
In our day, vinyl was just great, stereo was even better, but the music was out of this world GOOD!!! Lovely to hear you appreciate our "moldy oldies" as much as we did in the day!
"In Dreams" is sublime.
I'm from England and had seen Roy Orbison numerous times and he sounded just like that live!!
His mid-'60s hits like this one, "Oh, Pretty Woman," & "Only the Lonely" influenced _everyone_ from the Beatles to Elvis...to Bruce Springsteen and Prince. He was pulled back out of obscurity in the 1980s via membership in The Traveling Wilburys and had his last huge hit ("You Got It") right before his death in December 1988. You really _need_ to hear more!
First time hearing? Amazing
Rot Orbison had a wonderful voice, this is how he always sounds. I remember the radio back in the day. yes jsut like this
People in the UK loved Roy Orbison. In one documentary he was laughing and said he was singing in England had gotten seven or eight encores and the Beatles drug him off the stage and laughingly said "Yankee go home." I think the Beatles were waiting to go on stage and the crowd didn't want Roy to stop singing.
Hey Salvo .. I really appreciate the diversity of music that you are willing to listen & react to. Roy Orbison is to me an old timer, from my parents era. But I do respect & like most of his music. He even had lots of hits later in my era as well. Here's a couple more I know & like that u may want to check out: "Blue Bayou" and "Only the Lonely". Of course there's more where those came from. B safe & well .. Peace Out ☮️ 🙂🤘🏼
Absolutely flawless vocal control and range awesome doesn't come close to describing this.
Roy had a massive amount of tragedy in his life, which only deepens the beauty of his songs.
I second the notion that you should watch Roy's duet with K.D. Lang, of this song, and also K.D singing this song after he had passed as a tribute to him. Very emotional.
One of my all time favorites. Thank you
I saw Orbison in 81 and he sang so strong it felt like getting hit in the face with a wall of sound. Perfectly still , he knocked us out ☮️
1965 was a long time ago. I was only 10 years old at the time. Roy Orbison was an exceptionally gifted musical artist. Roy had one of the most beautiful most capable voices I have ever heard.
When you ask about remastering, do you mean something like autotune?
His voice was amazing. He certainly didn't need autotune. Most of them back then didn't.
If you needed that amount of help, you just wouldn't make it.
Remastering is simply cleaning up the audio- EQ, compression, panning, volumes, noise removal etc we don’t change the sound we make it clearer. Old recordings like this were pre digital so it has been remastered, upscaled in quality, bitrate etc
It was great that he got a sudden following when THE TRAVELING WILBURYS exploded on music fans, The combined Talent was unpresidented...I love, [ END OF THE LINE.
I suggest his duet with k d lang singing "Crying". Very powerful. Thank you for this reaction.
Look up Roy's Black and White performance. The songs will blow your mind.
He was called The BIG O for good reason. the song Leah is one of my favourites from Roy
Goosebumps
THIS IS YOUR VERYYYY 1ST ROY SONG SALVO??? 😊YIKESSSSS, YOU SHOULD LOVE IT MAN! ROY PASSED ON IN 88, PART OF THE GREAT LEGEND ROCK BAND ( THE TRAVELING WILBURYS ) ROY ORBISON, GEORGE HARRISON, BOB DYLAN, TOM PETTY AND JEFF LYNNE 😊 MORE CLASSIC ROY : ONLY THE LONELY, PRETTY WOMAN, I DROVE ALL NIGHT, ENJOYYYY THIS GUY SALVO!
Was 4 when this came out. My parents loved this song!
I simply love watching jaws fall open when Roy starts to stretch even a little bit. Dive deep, my friend. Roy's catalogue of fuckin' fantastic is wide and deep, and includes collaborations with many other Hall of Fame performers who loved and admired him.
First and only song I ever singing karaoke in a nightclub in Palm Springs. I didn't know anyone in the place. I was at a convention. Gee I did a good job. I had enough practice over the years!!!
My own personal favourite song of Roy's is 'In Dreams' - whenever I am called on to perform (which thankfully is very rarely) then this is my 'Go to' song.
This was a live performance with his real voice, no overdubs. Listen to the original recorded in 1963 or 64 when I was in high school. The only difference between this and the original that I can hear is that in this concert he hesitates about 1/4 of a beat when he sings 'Over you." His voice sounds the same on both recordings. He was incredible. Check out all of his songs.
My absolute favorite singer by far.
Roy Orbison RIP, among the greats, one of a kind and so loved. His last recording was with The Traveling Wilburys, check it out, it's wonderful. A super group with some of the best musicians of our time.
Listening to Roy ORBINSON since 1964, this song is not been remastered. Even Elvis Presley stated that MR ROY ORBINSON IS THE BEST VOICE in the industry.
1965 in a high school gym. no auto tune, back in the sixties they substituted talent! Living it was even better!
SalvoG: A MUST WATCH: Roy Orbison, "Black and White Night"... Orbison with backup by: Bruce Springsteen, Jackson Browne, Elvis Costello, K.D. Lang, Bonnie Raitt, T. Bone Burnett, Tom Waits, Jennifer Warnes, +. It's amazing, it's fantastic, it's just incredible. Make the time to view/hear this once-in-a-lifetime masterpiece. Time very, very well spent!!!
Great reaction! So true. It's music that brings us together; timeless. It's somehow familiar; like we've done this all before in some distant memory.
His voice is sublime. It just soars. He doesn’t open his mouth. How does that work?
Roy had one of the most beautiful voices of his time and that is why it has endured. Even the great Elvis once said Roy had the most perfect voice and referred to him as the greatest singer in the world during one of his Vegas concerts. That’s a big endorsement.
1964, “Oh, Pretty Woman”, I fell in love with Roy Orbison! That Voice! Absolutely love your reaction to my first love!
Now, find the clip that has Roy and KD Lang singing this song, many years later than this one, when Roy is much older. He never lost it.🤗
roy o in dreams will blow you away a must play
He had a whole lot of lovelorn songs. The music my hubby used to sing to me.
His most iconic song is Oh Pretty Woman. He was also late in life among the super group The Travelling Wilburys.
Can't believe 9 mos ago (2023??) you had never heard Roy Orbison. Your life has not been complete...as you now know. He was a gift from God.
Hello, if you didn't know roy orbison was at sun records with Elvis presley and johnny cash in the late 50's Amazing singer! Another great reaction and studio sounds. Thanks
roy later performed with a supergroup call The Traveling Wilburys. Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Tom Petty, Jeff Lynn and Roy Orbison.
If you like this, you should react to songs from the Traveling Wlbury (Roy Orbison, George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, and Jeff Lynne) a Supergroup. I’m always surprised when people don’t know these older amazing performers.
The " End of the Line" video they did after he passed and the empty rocking chair tribute
Some duos MUST be heard. One is K D Lang and Roy Orbison singing In Crying. 🎉 Another is Pavoratti (not sure of spelling) and James Brown doing This Is A Man's World. Both of them must be heard.
A love so beautiful will absolutely melt you
Machismo is a Spanish word for being very macho or masculine! Roy has a hauntingly beautiful voice! Nobody before or since sounds quite like him!
Check out his ‘Only the Lonely’ video from “Black and White Nights”. Also note who else is playing and singing. Chills.
I was scrolling through the comments when I heard you start reading the lyrics, and I don't know who put those lyrics there or why, but they're not the lyrics to this song; they're lyrics to a song called 'I Drove All Night,' which was originally written for Roy Orbison, but was eventually recorded by Cyndi Lauper.
Thanks! Yes, Roy could yodel.. just like Patsy Cline could... these incredible vocalists had such versatile talents... appreciate your reaction.. and also Traveling Wilburys.. the song that featured Roy was "Not alone"...
My favorite of his is You Got It. Released in the late 80s.
Love Roy Orbison! My favorite song is Pretty Woman.
He was a composer. As well wrote most of his music. Left a lot of on publish written music that his two sons were going to publish..
No auto tune. Great voice.
Just listen to all of his work. He had a one of a kind voice and writing talent. Read up and listen.
The dark glasses - his son explained that he couldn't see without glasses, and left his regular ones on a plane traveling to England, so wore his sunglasses on stage. At any rate, he was only 52 when he died and we all felt the loss of his gifts.
He sings beautifully. He played with the Traveling Wilburys later in life with Tom Petty,Jeff Lynne, Bob Dylan and Ringo Starr.
Back when a true voice was a talent......not all the electronic stuff to make a voice sound good...He was the real thing.
