I'm in the last stages of selling off a LOT of gear. I get questions about how I do this all the time so....it seemed like high time we dedicate a live stream to the topic.
In the last three months I've sold 11 guitars, 11 amps (coincidentally) and 16 pedals (so far.). I almost never lose on the deal . I'll share my strategies and answer questions about how to move out the excess...or how to find that one amazing piece that's been eluding you because that's the other side of knowing how to sell. :)

Interesting video. Keith! Pro tip: Anyone looking for guitar boxes can have a custom box made at their local U-Haul store for about $12-15. It is very nice quality and double-walled. Better than any box that I've gotten from any manufacturer, plus it's super convenient to have it made to your exact measurements.

The Marie Kondo of guitars! Marie tells folks to clear their houses by looking at stuff and if it doesn't do a job, doesn't delight you, takes up space, wastes your time - sell it, give it away, send it to a charity shop, or even bin it. I'm down to the basics and it's like being on holiday when you can only take what you really need - I'm freeeeeee!!!!!
I was at work when you done this stream. My wife wants me to sell a lot of the stuff but its all special to me.

I recently sold a lot of gear mainly due to a major move, but one of my secondary reasons was to raise enough dough for my second extended trip to AZ.
I went there 5 years ago and had some of the greatest experiences of my life.
Keith! Every time I jones for a new guitar I watch your How Many Do You Need video, and its been at least 6 months since I've needed to watch it. I still have a "dream rig" but it's likely I'll never own it. That's ok... nice to dream.
The dream rig would be Collings double cut JR single P90 into a real 50s Custom Tweed. No pedals because I already own my dream pedals, and would likely only use a tuner and my EP booster. Ah... dreamy.
What a timely topic. I have bought and sold many guitars and amps over the years.
Recently I moved from Nevada, where I have lived the last 4 years back to the western New York area and because I only had my van available for the move I really had to bring down my collection to what would fit withn my other things and that became the deciding factor in what I would keep.
I parted with 7 guitars, of which, at least 3 guitars I thought would be with me forever because they are rare and hard to replace. I also sold my second favorite Fender amp.
In the end I got down to 3 Electric guitars and my only remaining Acoustic along with 2 amps, one Acoustic/PA and my Super Champ.
Man, it was tough, to go from owning over a dozen pieces, down to just these, but they really are all I need to suit any occasion I can now imagine for myself. The only saving grace is that I moved to within 2 miles from my oldest daughter, whom I have gifted a few guitars and equipment over the years, so now I can beg, borrow and exchange gear with her.

"Time Enough For Love" and "Methuselah's Children" are the 2 novels that stand out with his Lazarus Long character concepts.
Awesome to hear you mention them. Heinlein has always been a favorite since childhood.
Always loved Heinlein and Lazarus Long was his best character.
i think you should talk about the lifelong journey of selling gear. My point is, I may want to sell gear at some point, but I want to have tried so much before, which I am still buying...
Hey man! Love your channel and am currently in the process of purging myself. It’s hitting home right now. I think I’m going to keep one digital amp, one tube amp, and my kemper. Guitars are harder. Currently have 13 but would like to get to 5. Feels like letting them go is like cutting off fingers haha. Curious which guitars you decided to keep? I see a 335 back there:)….

I was really curious about eBay fees as I have been selling quite a bit there. It looks like Musical Gear is at 5.85% on the first $7,500, then 2.35%. There is also a $0.30 nonrefundable fee on top of the percentage take. It looks like shipping/handling, maybe even the tax paid, is used in the total for calculating eBay's fee. :-) You (Keith) probably got 12.55% from the top of their fee list, but that is only for certain categories, including Music, which could easily throw a person off. Anyone else see it this way or differently?

Hi Keith..sorry I missed this... catching up now...great topic...going into fall I'm considering some trades more than downsizing...lol..got a ton of crap I don't need or use...all pretty fantastic just not using them enough and purchased a few on a limb...great advice buddy...miss your histories... anything in the pipeline in the works?

@@fivewattworld had a ric bass make my arm 4 inches longer as an 8th grader I carried a ric 4 string in sunburst in a hard case a mile and a half home 3 times a week for a while school year...lol...I weigh 140 soaking wet at 47 today...lol..so u can imagine...heaviest guitar I've ever played in 30; years of playing and dabbling...belonged to my band teacher...great sax player and musician in his own right...Frank Conti is his name...played all over the world...wish I knew more about him... husband and wife music dept in the 70s 80s 90s at Johnsburg central school....you sparked alot of memories w that Keith 🙏
Not to be a comment hog but just had an idea 💡 for a topic in the future...I'm probably not the first but what about the thing that every musician has been through and must navigate w a conscience and a fat wallet? It's what leads us to the selloffs and purges...the GAS?

A few years back, police locally were encouraging people to do online gear deals in the parking lot of the police stations.
I feel like I don't agree with you on gear minimization. I'm 67 and as I look back on my gear transactions, I regret every sale. I had a Mesa Boogie Mark II that I sold to finance my wedding. 40 years later, everyone at the wedding is dead or mentally impaired, but I still remember my Mesa Boogie that was sacrificed. No...I don't advocate selling anything unless you're starving.

Check out selling your books through Amazon. I've bought several used books through Amazon and saved lots of money. Otherwise, eBay is a good place to sell books.

@@fivewattworld For sure. I wasn't trying to be a dick, just wondering which statement was correct. I can go look it up, though. You've got plenty of other things to do, and your videos obviously involve lots of prep. What you're doing is good for music and for guitar.
