    An absolutely iconic musical event, performed by one of the spearheads of experimental electronic music. TD merged in this concert elements of classical & contemporary music and created one of the most outstanding concerts of all times. A German (!) band performing at one of the most significant churches in the UK, once raided by the German Luftwaffe - what a way to symbolise forgiveness and hopefully everlasting peace between former enemies. Hats of to Tangerine Dream for taking on this challenge, and a big compliment to the Poms for welcoming us Krauts in their country.

    To all of you who are bemoaning the absence of the actual sound from the concert: I actually wrote to Tony Palmer the director a few years back asking him what had happened, and he very graciously took the trouble to reply. I don't have the email any more but the tale is this....
    The whole concert was filmed (by Tony Palmer and crew), soundtrack and all...some 100 minutes. It was seemingly funded by Virgin with a view to licensing it to the BBC, hence Branson had initial power of approval. Tony Palmer delivered a 52 minute master edit to Virgin (with original sound) with a view to it being shown on BBC arts programme `Omnibus'.
    That was the last Tony saw of it until a year after the concert, when it was finally shown in October 1976 as a stand alone programme, and had been slashed down to 30 minutes with the original concert soundtrack replaced with `Ricochet'. He has since tried without success to track down the original edit which Virgin of course can find no trace of.
    Knowing Branson as we do, my theory is that he saw it as a golden opportunity to create a free promo slot for Ricochet, and had the soundtrack replaced. He even hammered it home with a `Music From The Album `Ricochet' on Virgin Records' caption at the end of the programme....on the BBC, a strictly non commercial broadcaster for whom this would have been strictly against the guidelines.
    Hope this helps solve the mystery ?

      @WolfKreide Před 5 lety +2

      so,.the upcoming release ist still partly Ricochet? Thanks in advance - here the link and text:

      Film director Tony Palmer had always been deeply unsatisfied with his film of Tangerine Dream. For one thing, it contained the wrong music!

      Palmer explains: "Well, it was a cunning piece of Richard Bransonism! That is, it was the soundtrack of the yet-to-be-released album. So, he was doing a cunning bit of PR, because what they played in Coventry cathedral was music from two existing albums and that was of no interest to him whatsoever. What was interesting for Richard, and what was important for Richard - I respect that, of course - was to promote the new, not-yet-released album. And I was a sucker, and I fell for it, and we cut all the pictures to the new, yet-to-be-released album. So what we’ve done this time is we’ve actually gone back and listened again to the music they did actually play, and of course now, I realise that it was quite different. And I’ve had to recut not all the pictures, but a great many of the pictures to that soundtrack."

      This DVD also contains footage of Tangerine Dream from the music programme, All You Need is Love.

    The album was released in 1975. It consists of two long compositions mixed from taped recordings of the England and France portions of their autumn 1975 European Tour. Much of the raw material for Ricochet, in particular part 2, was recorded at Fairfield Halls in Croydon, London, during Tangerine Dream's live performance there in October, 1975. The original, unedited version of this performance can be heard in set 3 of The Bootleg Box Set Vol. 1. (info from wikipedia).

      Edgar Froese would definitely object to the term "techno", just as he objected to the term "new age". See this interview: www.voices-in-the-net.de/___ashif.htm
      "Dream Collector: You do not like this kind of music, although a lot of "New Age" artists refer to Tangerine Dream as their musical prototype...
      Edgar Froese: This is not the music we play, even if record dealers, music reviewers and listeners are always looking for a "stylistic drawer" to put Tangerine Dream into. And, even more annoying than the music is the "New Age" philosophy where everything is a caricature of a positive world and people have to see this "jelly babyworld" through rose-coloured spectacles. "New Age Music" is just the acoustical wallpaper for this world view, but this is exactly not the way we see the worid around us. Tangerine Dream music is not the right choice for peopie who are still into baby food."
      Edgar Froese was a unique artist, surrounded by unique people, that together formed Tangerine Dream. They have never been equaled and it would be an insult to put some label on Tangerine Dream, that refers to a music style that came later
