  • Tsunami - www.tmba.tv/broadcastanimation... What Causes a Tsunami- TMBA created this 3d animation for the Discovery Channel to explain to viewers how shifting tectonic plates can cause a Tsunami.
Tsunami is a Japanese word which means "harbor wave." In the past these damaging ocean waves were sometimes known as tidal waves but, the term fell out of favor with the scientific community, because tsunamis have nothing to do with tides. Over 80% of tsunamis form in the Pacific Rim region. There is a geographically active area there known as the "Ring of Fire," which is prone to volcanoes and earthquakes due to the existence of tectonic plate boundaries in the ocean floor. Tsunami facts can be difficult to understand and scientists are still attempting to determine what causes them and how to predict them earlier so lives can be saved.
The earth is actually made up of huge "plates" like a jigsaw puzzle. Where these plates fit together is known as the plate boundary. The causes of a tsunami are the plates when they shift against each other. In a divergent plate boundary, the plates move away from each other. Where there is a convergent plate boundary the plates push toward each other or collide. Transform boundaries are formed where plates shift past each other horizontally.
If the there is a shift, like an earthquake, on the ocean floor and a plate boundary rises or falls, it displaces the water above. The destructive force causes a tsunami to form.

Can anyone explain why the tide goes out like the sea goes out into the sea so far? I know that sounds so stupid... but you know the water recedes significantly prior to the wave coming in. Is the water kind of like back building like thunderstorms do or like what's that situation? Thank you in advance for anyone who answers my stupid question. I googled it but the search results were either for something completely unrelated or full of huge words that have to do with oceanography and science that I do not understand. Lol

Tsunamis occur due to impulsive disturbance to sea water due to a change in shape of the sea floor abruptly. This occurs for three reasons, namely: earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and avalanches (land slides) that occur on the seabed. Of the three causes of tsunamis, earthquakes are the main cause. The size of the tsunami wave is determined by the characteristics of the earthquake that caused it.
The largest part implusif sources of interference that causes a massive tsunami is an earthquake on the ocean floor. Although volcanic eruptions can also cause devastating tsunamis, such as the eruption of Krakatoa in 1883.

It's it same as the mega tsunami?

@@Valkaze111 A megatsunami is classified as a tsunami over 300 feet high. These are known to be triggered by landslides, which may sometimes be associated with volcanic activity. The highest tsunami in modern records is the Lituya Bay tsunami of 1958. It was caused by a massive landslide that was triggered by a 7.8 earthquake. It reached 1,710 feet.
The second largest tsunami on record was the Spirit Lake tsunami caused by the 1980 eruption of Mt. St. Helens. It reached a height of over 850 feet.
#3 on the list is also the biggest known human-triggered tsunami. It happened in Italy in 1963. A dam was built to fill a reservoir above a village in a steep valley. A mountain behind the dam was unstable, but work continued despite warnings from geologists. As the reservoir changed the pressure on the mountains making up its shoreline, saturating more land around it, the unstable mountain became more and more compromised. It finally gave way, pushing an 820-foot wall of water over the dam, wiping out just about all of the village below.

It is called convergent Boundary from which oceanic plates collide.Tsunami only happens when earthqauke takes place in the ocean.
