    I have a tricky hill at the end of my run. I can either avoid it (shuttle runs 🤦‍♀️) or diversion; or I can run it. It’s definitely a ‘mind’ over matter situation and when I commit to it, I conquer it 😊😇

      I did a hill to fast and to soon and I got plantar fasciitis. With the helpful information from physiotherapists on CZcams I got better in a couple of weeks, thank God.
      Injuries are part of the process of learning from our mistakes and getting stronger on the journey.

    One of the hugely helpful things I've taken away from your channel over the last year is the "motivation vs discipline". So many things can impact motivation and relying on that isn't a recipe for success.

    Another great video. I almost choked on my water when Mary said nutrition isn't "rocket surgery", mainly because I know that is a malaphor I could easily be guilty of.

    I really appreciate how you two don't try to advocate for some specific methodology, product, or technique (other than the real ones that are harder to swallow like consistency). You stay honest and objective, possibly at the cost of clicks, but your followers will appreciate hearing the truth over snake oil videos about how to half your running pace in two weeks. Your advice is pragmatic, and you keep it real in all of your videos. Keep up the great work!

    Ben and Mary. Super video. In Paris the week and started running on asphalt for the first time (I have been running on the treadmill). Finished two runs along the Seine. Including one early morning today before catching the train to Milano. Loved every minute of it. Running is such a great way to explore a destination!!

    Can Mary also address and comment on how to handle menstrual cycle and training sessions throughout the month (there are different levels of hormones therefore different levels of energy reserve for women throughout a cycle). I have very recently started running and am still figuring out what works best for me. Although there are many videos addressing runner’s issues, it would be nice to know from a female runner how the running journey can be a bit different for us women than men (if at all it is so).

    Restricted diet along with a keto diet and trying to train hard didn't work for my wife and I ....low energy and poor workouts 2 weeks in ....we realized what we need clean carbs and good fats worked and yes stopping trying so hard to better our times because it lead us to injuries....consistency is much more fun and works for the long haul....

    Had two rough weeks, family visit, lots of work, late nights, little sleep, haven't run in two weeks ... result: feel like shit, completely drained, crappy state for the last three days ... Need to get back on track!!! Thanks for your videos and motivation!

    One of the things I’m finding, and being told by my coach is willingness to be in the pain cave - I have a military background fro, a long time ago but that training I think gave me the ability to push through discomfort and keep going regardless. Very much related to self belief but my coach is consistently surprised by how long I can stick at hard efforts - he’s constantly telling me to slow down but when I need to dig deep I have it there - I think all runners have to have this ability to a certain extent.     Thanks for the info on running in heat - I have been training hard over the last few weeks (been hot in the UK) and I thought I was getting more unfit because my heart rate was through the roof at a much slower pace!

    #10 hit home for me. I'm recovering from covid and trying to train for a marathon. My HR is elevated by about 10 bpm at all times and I needed the reminder that it's ok to give myself time to recover fully.

    One #7, some of the best advice I've heard is from "Run like a pro even if you are slow" and it was don't freak out over a single bad run. It's going to happen but don't assume it means you aren't fit. This can especially happen during a taper after peak week and your body feels terrible but you need to trust the taper and trust that you are fit enough to execute on race day. A single bad run can really mess with your head but it's something everyone will experience. Pay attention to the trend instead of fixating on a difficult day.

    Another nice and informative video.
    To 3rd point (heat management) - I read about running with cotton shirts in extreme heat (or similar fabric) as it will stay wet and so keep cooling you down permanently. Exposing a lot of skin would dry the sweat fast and "motivate" the body to keep producing more and more sweat which means losing a very lot of water..
    (Though I am not very knowledgeable personally about running in high temperatures, just thought about having read this when watching the video).

    This could content topic couldn't have come at better time.
    Im half way in a 5k plan. I'm negotiating with my self to take a week of to fully recover. I'm so fatigue and my mind was is on auto pilot to stay consistent. However I feel very thankful pushing through and I'm not injuryed after a training run.. But I'm asking myself is the right thought to have after a run.
    Overthinking is my enemy but is also trying to protect me?
    It was very helpful Mary covered the diet portion it's on been roller coaster.
    And using HRV and monitor resting heart rate on my watch assest if I'm good to go has been helpful. Added to my check list if I'm good to run.
    My back up mantra before my run ", Rain or shine I'm going to run" 🏃
    Thanks again Messy Happy. It my current state of mind back forth right now.

    I am still at the beginning of running and I mean Ike I have done 3 weeks and been sick for two. 😢 so the reminder that I need to be kind to myself when I get back out there was very timely. Thank you. Also the running in heat information will be useful. I live in Western Australia and so the time of running in the heat is coming. I'll try to come up with a plan to deal with the issues you mentioned.

    Another home run! So much good info. I think stress is a huge one that gets over looked. If you’re in a fight or flight state all day at work or wherever, that’s definitely going to affect training and recovery.

    I run fasted and feel fine for 10k. Anything more than that ill eat a date, some nuts, cheese and jerky. The night before a longer run ill add 2oz of red rice, broccoli with protein for some carbs. I'm 50+ recently started taking a NMN supplement and noticing an improvement in my runs and how I feel all day.

    All great points! Just had a 10k race this morning which was hot! Normally out at sunrise so running at 10am on a sunny day was so difficult. The heat was hammering everyone. Think my heart rate was a full 7-10bpm above its usual, enough to push it into a different zone and really keep the brakes on! Thanks guys, as ever great content 👍

    Work is always a massive problem for me, spend 12-14hrs on my feet find it difficult to get going once I'm home.

      Yeah I feel you. A physically active job in 30-40 degree heat kicks my bum but makes me all the more determined to keep getting it done 💪🏼😊

      You're probably doing enough exercise at work with those hours, and more likely to reach fatigue faster, thus improving your chances of injury, running twice a week might be a better plan for you. I have a similar job, always moving for work, up and down stairs, fixing things, I'm finding bike works better for cardio, and the odd run once or twice a week for an hour is enough to tick that box, I'm also a keen lifter, so I'd much rather be working with weights/resistance training, to improve strength. Peter Attias protocols for health and longevity is a nice balance for an exercise template for health, running is a tool, and luckily it's not the only tool.

      @@scotchbarrel4429 I'm in the middle of training for a marathon in September and an ultra in October, I normally try to run 4 times a week. It does tend to end up at 2-3 times with a long run on a Saturday after work . I do go to the gym once a week for strength. It is quite hard to balance everything.

      💯, not to mention heat and cold therapy, swimming... But that all pales in comparison to a marathon, good on you, I like running, but not enough to run a marathon, I'm happy at 10km in an hour, I played alot of rugby and rugby league throughout my younger days, so I'm alot more conscious of my joints, especially towards my later years.

    I did a session of 800m repeats in the rain this morning. I figure that I can’t control the weather on race day, so I shouldn’t skip training for it (unless it would be dangerous obviously).

    Thanks for all the great videos. As a runner and international school teacher who has lived and run all over the world, especially enjoy your videos. Remember that heat when I lived in Singapore. Living in Germany now and still feel the pull to SE Asia, but have a beloved dog, so would love to know if your dog has been able to run with you despite the heat. Has she returned to the UK with you? We still have one more week to go here in Leipzig. Running with the madness at term end is hard, but you have drummed in the message of consistency. Enjoy your break!

    Great points both - especially on motivation. Relying on motivation is always a risky business but if you build discipline and good habits then you're more likely to keep things consistent.

    @ben Do you think that since running in the heat elevates the heart rate it also makes running slow more difficult? I experienced something similar in one of my planned long runs where my heart rate rose to 165 and I also wasn’t able to bring my speed down during initial period. Eventually I could only run 80% of my target distance. I would really appreciate your view on this. Thank you

    What I've learned over the years is absolutely CONSISISTENCY IS KEY combined with NEVER TAKE A GOOD CHUNK OF TIME OFF... the fundamental reason why I strongly believe in running streaks... even if you get out a bare minimum of 2kms a day you must regularly get out running. PS 'junk miles' is a BS concept due to this philosophy. Just saying.

      What helps me is getting my bedroom completely dark, really makes a difference.
      Also if you find yourself unable to "black out" the room, maybe try a "sleep mask", it´s like glasses made for sleeping which will prevent your eyes from being bothered by light.

      Ummm, you’ve got this a bit wrong, Darrin. He destroys the myth of talent, which I am all on board with. But if you read his later books and many others, you can’t argue the point that we all have different genetic predispositions for learning, growth and performance level. We are not all born exactly the same and therefore have different starting points and improvement potential. I think what you’re thinking of is sports that require a great deal of skill acquisition. Otherwise you’re suggesting if I trained like Usain Bolt I’d be as fast as him. Thanks for commenting though, always appreciated 😊

      Chapter10 are black runners superior ?? He details the genetics myth , the Williams sisters explain that? Black people are predisposed to being good tennis players who grow up in Compton! Sorry if I rant but saying certain people have a easy path to the top is lazy, look at Marys improvements does she now say well that's it sub 40 I'm at the limit , hey cool channel have used alot of your info thanks for the reply triathlon always

And I am saying we are not. It’s that simple. Let’s boil it down to that. Are you saying we are all exactly equal genetically speaking? Because this is as far as my point goes. It’s a point about the pitfalls of comparison.

    "Expose as much skin as possible..." (Skin cancer has entered the chat) fun fact: the cancer doesn't necessarily start on the exact same spot where you got your regular sunburns (back, nose,...). It can start ANYWHERE. Like on your rosetta. What a wonderful death, innit. Shirtless guys are nutters who don't know any better. Karma is a bitch. Stay clothed, I beg you.
