- I have herpes. Such a simple little sentence.
3 little words, but so hard for me to say.
For a long time I couldn’t even say the word, herpes. I would call it X. I would write in my journal, X. X everywhere. X marked the spot.
I don’t know why...no, we’ll I do know why. The word was disgusting to me at the time, I felt dirty, ashamed, yeh that word was really hard to hear, it was hard to accept. I was 21 at the time, you know pre my diagnosis. I had been in my 1st and only loving relationship with someone for a long time, I waited for over a year to be intimate. So I felt like a good girl and then I had travelled overseas and had some summer romances and shortly after returning had found out that I had herpes.
I felt like it was so unfair, that I had been so careful and I had take precautions and I didn’t feel like THIS should happen to me. I was so young
Now I can look at it and see that my reaction at the time was as if I had a death sentence and I can see and put it in perspective and see that it hasn’t ruined my life but at the time, as a young woman I certainly felt like this was going to ruin my life, how would I ever tell a partner, how would I ever have a healthy loving relationship, who would wan’t to be with somebody like me.
All of those questions that I think a lot of people go through when they have experienced anything that has some kind of stigma attached to it.
You know it was heart breaking to me. I felt violated...
When I interview people on my show ‘KirstyTV’ I ask them about their different adversities and struggles and the one question I ask is ‘what do you feel was taken from you’.
And for me I felt my freedom was taken, my youth. Because I wasn’t free to just meet people and have fun in relationships, to get to know someone.
It took away the joy of getting meeting someone and getting to know them and finding out if it would go somewhere. And it didn’t take that away, I did because that’s how I reacted to it and, and the hold it had over me...
My hope in sharing this video is that you could feel like you were less alone and that you were not the only one. We are never alone, there are so many people going through what ever it is that your going through. That was why I started the show. I wanted to interview people that would tell their stories and share what had once been a dirty little secret that held guilt and shame for them and they were not able to share that and in not sharing it we hide who we are and we carry those feelings of guilt, shame and dirtiness in some way when were not able to talk about it.
I wanted to help people set themselves free. The 2 years post this video have transformed my life. I am finally healthy, happy and FREE.
So today is 1 year since I shared it and I haven't looked back.
I don't recognize this girl when I watch it now. She was still so afraid. I had lived with herpes 18 years by this point so it astounds me I was still so affected. 1 year on I have finally completed my healing and sharing it was the final piece in that journey.
It was the hardest thing I have EVER done. To put myself out there so publicly was really scary. I felt naked. But I am so glad I listened to the whispers inside that said 'it's time...'

I recently found out in Jan of 2017 that I have HSV 2, I'm glad that there are video on CZcams....I had a girlfriend who told my last summer who told me her story. She tried to comment suicide, but she's been well for year living with HSV 1. I cried, I'm in a place where my health is important and I'm still the beautiful person that I am. So far I'm healing and keeping track of my body and ways to decrease the breakouts. That's all I can do. I had all the thoughts in your video and well I'm ok, one day at a time!

Agreed. I was diagnosed at age 17 and a half and felt so robbed of my freedom. I had only had sex with my ex bf and yup, he gave it to me. But- life goes on.. And this doesn't make US any different or less "womanly" than anyone else. I agree- my youth was taken.. It's BS. But my boyfriends accepts me for who I am and doesn't care that I have X lol. Nope. Doesn't care. And he's (knock on wood) never had a break out although we are NEVER intimate in any way when and IF I do have a breakout (which by the grace of The Lord above is so rare and never a large one like the first that hurt so bad and I stayed in bed for a week taken Valtrax). I felt like everyone thought I was a whore and it was so FAR from the damn truth. I had sex with 1 person and got this. It's life- and Life does happen. Good luck and stay STRONG. I never thought I would be okay with having it, and trust me I wish I did NOT but God is good and has healed my soul and taken away my emotional pain :).

I'm no longer with the guy I couldn't get past my resentment towards him.
I have outbreaks all the time and nerve damage. I've given up with treating it because an outbreak will immediately happen after treatment.
I already had depression and suicidal tendencies before but this has just hit me like nothing before.
I'm in pain on a regular basis and can't tell people. I can't enjoy sex because it always hurts. I can't find someone to love me because I have so much baggage, depression, herpes, suicidal thoughts, an embarrassing home and anxiety.
I don't see how anything can change or get better but your video has at least made me feel like I'm not alone and at the moment that's something I really value, its not something I get to feel often if ever.

I had a herpes scare 6 months ago last summer around May, and it was one of the traumatizing events ever. I had a one night stand with someone off of Tinder and a few weeks later noticed blisters on my groin area. I went to planned parenthood and at first glance the Nurse Practitioner said it did look like it and gave me free Valtrex. When she said those words to me I broke down completely and was a nervous wreck. This was all happening during my interning placement and I was so stressed that I received a failing midterm evaluation, and my hair was staring to fall out. FORTUNATELY they called me back later when they received my results and said I was negative (turned to out to folliculitis, thank God). I passed my placement and graduated but my God, it was one of the most darkest moments of my life. Anyone out there who is suffering has my complete sympathy. I truly feel for you.

I got diagnosed with hsv2 about a month ago. I made my last two sexual partners to get tested. They both tested negative. but I've never had an outbreak.
