  • The 2023 NFL QB class is very interesting top to bottom and Tanner McKee is one of the most intriguing prospects. After a mixed 3 year career at Stanford, McKee has declared for the 2023 NFL draft but I personally think this is a mistake. Today we will talk about who he is, his draft outlook and why I am worried, enjoy!

I don’t necessarily blame him. Given he went on a two year mission trip, he’s a bit older than some other guys coming into the draft. Gotta get the money while you can

Imagine he was a qb in Stanfords prime, but anyways stanford opens up more doors in his life if his nfl career doesn’t work out.

I’m going to play devils advocate on this one. (Not knowing what Tanner is thinking). He reminds me a bit of UW Jacob Eason. He really could have used another year at Washington but went early and now he’s on practice squads and in and out of football. But, Eason made a TON of money as a “pro prospect”. I know Eason felt that the talent around him that senior year wasn’t that great and probably didn’t want to start over again at another program trying to learn a new system in 2-3 months. I think McKee is probably thinking the same way. Why not go for it, make a pretty decent amount of money for a few years, then walk away with close to a million dollars and a degree from Stanford or he can finish up getting one. He’ll have no problem settling in to a regular life with a million dollar head start. Of course the down side is if Tanner McKee REALLY wants to be an NFL QB, then he should stay and develop.

While logically this sounds great, usually these guys have their sights set on being NFL QBs and being high-level competitors, truly believe they are making the best decision. The only other reason would be if he had a kid or family or something, which I do not believe he does.

I will point out two things. First, at Stanford, Tanner was working with one of the worse offensive lines in the country and operating in a system with outdated plays, countless injuries, and a limited bench. He was sacked repeatedly and really had no chance for most plays to develop. Second, he was very impressive in his first NFL game, making numerous long passes and racking up some impressive yardage. If you look at the film, there were 3 or 4 other passes that were dropped. I look forward to seeing what he can do this week against the Browns.

I like McKee. But I agree he is a bit raw in his own right and a bit of a toss up wild card. In the right situation, team, and system, and with the right mindset, I think he could dominate in the nfl like Josh Allen did. But in the wrong situation, I think he could definitely either fall apart or disappear like Mike Glennon and Davis Mills have/did. I do see a lot of Davis Mills in him.
A good situation would be with a good offensive coordinator/QB coach, a solid surrounding cast but most of a a good starter in front of him. Like Davis Mills I think he should sit and learn for at least two years. Masse, he’s got a great surround and Krause in a great offensive staff, I don’t think it would be wise to throw him in like Josh Allen was. Although it worked out for Allen, I don’t believe it would work out for him.
If McGee ended up with a team like my personal favorite team, ironically (for example, not being biased), where he could play behind cousins, for at least one or two years and learn from a great offensive staff, led by Kevin O’Connell, that would put him in the best situation to be successful and ready to take the reins.
Another QB I would like you to touch on would be one of my favorite and one of the most productive QBs the past two years GRAYSON MCCALL! He just made a bold move by entering the portal, I would like to see you cover your opinion on that. He is another one that if he ends up with the right team through the portal, this could dramatically benefit him. If he ends up with like UCLA or a team that can utilize his abilities and surround him with even better talent than what he’s had. But I wonder if he would have done well enough in the pre draft process to do better for himself there. Please cover that.

  • @California_OG_619

Considering Tanner's second year as a starter was worse than his first year, it could have only helped him stay at Stanford for one more year. He probably didn't want to deal with the hassle of learning a new system. I could see him going higher in the draft in the 90s and 2000's, where that pocket style-passing was the more preferred play-style (Manning bros, Brees, Ryan, Rivers, etc..). Personally, I like McKee a lot. He's a huge guy, rocket arm, high IQ, quarterback. He really just needs to work on his throwing mechanics. His fault is that he's not mobile which has become essential for quarterbacks to be in this day and age in football. He would need a great O-line similar to what Jared Goff has in Detroit, in order to be successful in the NFL. Unfortunately though, I doubt he will develop.

That’s for sure. We are planning on moving on from Dak and this is likely his last season as our quarterback unless he doesn’t step his game up even more. I did hear we are looking at Hendon Hooker from Tennessee and the reports about being intrigued by CJ Stroud was fake news.

  • @thepprshowwithmiguelromero6366

He will need the right coach to make it work. He won't change an organization around, so can't go to a bad team & expect good things. But under the right coaches he could become a franchise because of his IQ & strong arm...I don't think he could start out the gate, but mid season if a QB is showing up he could take that starting spot & depending on the system he is he could flourish. Seen mocks with him to NYG & I think that could be great for him assuming they also bring in WR help...what are your thoughts on Phil Jurkovec from BC?

Tanner is much better than people understand. He went to the elite 11 and did well there in high school. Stanford was tough with an outdated offense and lots of injuries around him with a limited bench. He was sacked repeatedly due to one of the worst lines in college football. He seems to be doing well in the pros so far and many argue he is QB 2 now.

As a Stanford fan who watched all his games, I consider him to be a slow version of Colin Kaepernick. He has a rocket of an arm, but inaccurate and erratic. His big wind up and lack of touch cause him to throw high to his recievers causing incompletions, tipped balls that lead to interceptions, and injuries to his receivers. He also really struggled in the short passing game. To give him the benefit of the doubt, he had a horrible QB coach and coordinator in Pritchard.
I see him going early 5th rd at best and wouldn't be surprised if he went undrafted. He's just too raw for someone to waste a roster spot. Practice squad most likely.

Well considering only one of the top three draft qb even passes the eyeball test he is making the right choice.
He is the only true pocket guy in the draft. Being drafted late is not the worst. It allows you to not be picked by a garbage franchise. A year learning under a bridge qb is what is best for him. A four year rookie deal is best for him first gets him a tad bit more cash and a whole extra year to get paid. Ask Lamar if he would rather that now. The ravens will now have him stupid cheap for five years.
The numbers are just that. He had no real cast supporting him. On the other hand one read run guys like hooker ran gimmick offenses with great skill players.
Will Levis has the highest ceiling in the draft by a mile. Tha bamma kid is vertically challenged and had real skill players. Ohio state dude is stupid over rated the wr talent thru that place is almost criminal. The kid from Florida is far from a finished product.
I think he is the qb with the highest floor. Can run a pro offense, passes the eye test is not a qb midget, can make all the throws and is not a rocket arm guy without touch on his passes. His celling is not stupid high but would be perfect for a solid team that won't lean on him real early.
As a saints fan he is who I want. When you have a defense that can hold the 9ers to 12 you need a guy to distribute the ball to players. He would be a perfect fit.
