I can imagine a bunch of Benjamin Franklin type folk sitting around the garden one Enlightenment period summer discussing the intriguing features of peripheral vision in ASMR videos. Focusing attention off the screen has a different effect than simply pointing the eye off screen and allowing attention to freely track the motions on the screen in the peripheral vision. Their laptops and phones were a bit clunkier back then.
