it's scandalous, but not surprising that Morrissey slagged off Mike and Andy as two who "never would have made it to the local shopping mall"... both are complete beasts on their instruments and of course The Smiths' sound could not exist without their prowess.
Remember seeing this in a bar in Ibiza later on in the 80’s and back in the UK buying a bootleg video recording - had to change colour settings on my tv so it looked normal 😊
This is the greatest thing I’ve ever seen on YT. I saw them at Red Wedge at Royal Court, Liverpool same year but never had a decent recording. This is sensational and I thank you from the bottom of my heart for posting it ❤
Hi there Ross, my name is Patricia and I am one of those lucky ones that were at The Smiths gig in Madrid 1985, during Madrid Saint Patron San Isidro, the atmosphere was electric and it was their first gig in Madrid, also it was free to attend, courtesy of that amazing Madrid Mayor, el Profesor Don Tierno Galvan, I will never forget that night!!!
The entire show is a gem, but the highest point was definitely the outstanding voice performance by Morrissey in Meat is Murder! And the one and only Johnny Fucking Marr
On back to back nights in the summer of 1985 I saw Tears for Fears and the Smiths. Tears for fears was great but The Smiths, oh my, well their live performance and energy was next level. I feel very fortunate to have had the chance to see them live.
Wow, great audio! It’s really interesting watching a concert from 1985 versus 1984 when they were still an up-and-coming band. The Smiths broke very quickly and progressed very quickly from riffs (what difference does it make) to some pretty sophisticated chord and harmonic changes (William. It was really nothing, headmaster ritual) I suspect this is the band at its peak live: tight from playing a ton of shows the previous year but before they got world and road weary.
I'm a life long smiths fan, and it will never cease to amaze me as to how great their live performances were. Given how intricate their songs are, you would expect some degradation, but everyone that was here got their money's worth and then some. I wish I would've been able to see them live when they were still together.
Saw this tour at the Beacon Theater NYC June '85. Great concert. Opened with "William". Saw again next year at Pier 84. Both great but '85 tour far greater setlist.
Enjoying this on my birthday (and a day before Moz's b-day 🥳). They're still one of my favorite bands, 30-odd years later. I didn't get into them until about two years after they broke up; it must have been an ecstatic experience to see them live. *I did see Moz in '92 - a great year to see him, for sure - but I always regret not seeing the Smiths. Maybe one day...🙏
I saw him in '92 as well, in Dublin and the previous year when he played his first solo concert here (The Smiths had played three times in Dublin, I was too young for all of them). And I agree, it was a great year to see him..but it wasn't The Smiths
four times sorry, I correct myself but only two of them were open to the public, the other two were at The Trinity College Ball, normal plebs not allowed, only Trinity students :)

my favorite part about the smiths is the fact that Johnny Marr came up with all these beautiful melodies and he was just a kid 😂 crazy natural talent
Or maybe exactly childlike.
So talented. Unreal.
I was there, and around 500.000 more people too. It was a free concert and one of the biggest events of that kind.
Greatest concert ever.
Your a very lucky man , did you get a shirt ?
I'm amazed that Andy Rourke's left hand didn't literally fall off by the end of each gig.
Every that’s here has god tier music taste

Same and even though that gig was free 😔

I don't go out tonight because I I'd rather watch this.
Mike Joyce is very underrated. Total animal.

I actually never seen or heard the Smiths live so I loved this concert! They sound so great ❤🎶

Those people witnessed greatness that night. How lucky they were to see that in concert. They can tell their grandchildren about it one day.
Yeah, memory pending!
Same thing Pelle, same thing

War Metal Enjoyer is Also Smiths enjoyer.
I would like to buy you not one, but two beers
RIP Andy Rourke 💔
Excelente músico merece todas homenagens.
meat is murder is played with the most emotion i’ve ever seen. remarkable. you can tell how much the song means to him by the way he sings it.
If I had a Time Machine I’d only use it to see The Smiths concerts. So sad I wasn’t able to.😢
Morrissey singing Meat Is Murder in this is immense... what passion and feeling!! Love you Moz
Seriously. It is absolutely HAUNTING with Matt’s tuning. Listen to it in headphones, eyes closed, cut off; HAUNTING AF!!!
They sound so good live!
Mike Joyce kept time like a machine.
How I so desperately wish I could’ve been alive to see them
Thems were the days - good stuff
Shout out to those endless melodies flowing out of that noodly guitar and Marr
hes a musical wizard. i think he wrote 'This Charming Man' when he was 17.
Such a tremendously underrated guitarist. Not by other guitarists mine you, as they know his skill, but by the rest of the world.
